Jefferson Starship Detroit 2/23/2006

>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> I was hoping to catch one ot the 2 shows near me, either Cleveland at the "House of Rules", or the Majestic in Detroit. After getting stuck at work til almost 11 pm the night of Cleveland, I had no choice but the Motor City. I left work at 4:30 and headed up I-75. I stopped by and picked up some Pork Fried Rice and Spicy Chicken with Broccoli as man can not live on music alone! As I arrived, the line going in had already formed. These musicians are old, even older than me if you can believe it. But, they represent a slice of music history. I can remember a trip to Radio City in October of 1974 with Mark and Eli to catch these guys! I'll never forget that night! A GA show and we got into NYC at 8:30am, hit the liquor store and got on line. We ended up about 10th row DFC and the rest is history. I was definitely not the oldest in the crowd tonight. The average age had to be over 40!
>
> They were doing a cd release of the show if you bought a gold circle ticket, so, no soundboard. I was the only taper until my "newest" friend, Steve from England arrived. I was able to haphazzardly get the soundcheck on the fly as I was pulling out my gear.
>
> I thought I recognized the guy at the soundboard. After Steve told me that Michael Gamon was the tour manager, it all hit me. I met Michael in THIS venue 6 years ago for the Blue Floyd show, also in February. Then I realized that is where I met the sound guy, Thomas, as we were both patched out of the board that night. Small world!

> Tom Constanten opened up with about a half hour set. He played solo until most everyone else joined him for a jammin' Deal. I haven't seen TC in at least 10-15 years. He looks the same except his white hair is very long. The Mountains of the Moon>Dark Star opener sounded as good as ever.
>
> Next up was Country Joe. Of course there was one yahoo yelling give me an F, Give me a U, give me a C, give me a K, what's that spell, as Joe took the stage. Joe also played a bout a half hour. His set was totally solo. As usual, his songs had some political overtones.
>
> On to the meat of the evening. The Starship took the stage at about 9:15. Cudos to the stage crew for keeping the show rolling as there were only minutes between each set! They opened up with Somebody to Love and Crown of Creation. The whole show sprinl\kled in their hits with many of my older favorites. What i found out is that they do a different set each night. That is the way to go! They even pulled out Darkness Smiling, an oldy from the Great Society, the precursor to the Airplane. With David Freiberg back in the fold, they played a couple of Quicksilver Messanger Band staples. Great hearing some of the Baron von Tollbooth stuff! One of my favorite moments, was the Have You Seen the Saucers sandwiched around Have You Seen the Stars Tonight. My only regret was I wish I could have seen the whole 2nd side of Blows Against the Empire as I did a couple of years ago. That is when I met John Murray who did sound for them.

> Being in Detroit, it is customary for me to hit the MGM casino and try to win my ticket money at Blackjack. I sat down at 1st base at a $15.00 table. My first 2 hands, 16 busts. Next hand, 16 stay and lose(gun shy). Next hand 14 bust. In 2 1/2 minutes I am out $60.00. Next hand I pushed with an 18. That actually made me happy! I started to get on a roll. It took me 16 minutes and 39 seconds, but I walked out with a $70.00 profit! The drive back and in bed by 2:30.
