John Bell and Friends Orlando 2/25/2006

John Bell and Friends Orlando 2/25/2006
>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> Well, it happened after some contortions. Last night at about 1:15 a.m., near the end of the Yonder Mountain show, I asked Drew and Kelly if they would be back tomorrow night for round 2. They said they were going to JB in Orlando. They asked if I was going. I told them I wasn't about to spend big bucks for a plane ticket to see 1 show. Drew is a pilot for Delta. He said maybe I can help with a "Buddy Pass". I was not in a real coherant state of mind, nor was he. He had a 2 hour ride back to Cincy and told me to think about it. I sent texts to Charles and Stacey to find a ticket, a ride from the airport, and a place to stay. Within minutes, that was all confirmed. I was already on the guest list for the YMSB show the following night. I called Drew at 3:45 am. There were 2 flights that had less than 5 seats available. Problem was, I had to fly standby. The price was airport fees and tax, a mere $78.00 round trip. Looks like a possibility.
>
> I slept from 5:00 until about 7:00. I called Drew and he got my personal info including credit card. I left for the airport for a 12:20 flight. A 50 seat plane on Chataqua Airlines (Delta Partner), and 49 seats were sold and all 49 passengers were there. They would not release the 50th seat without passing weights and balances. The plane was already 1 hour late. My mindset was, if I don't get on the plane, I go back to the Newport and have a great night with YMSB! Either way, I come out a winner. Ten minutes prior to take off, they put me on the plane. I arrived at about 3:45 pm. Melissa and Stacey picked the old man up at the airport just before 4:00 p.m. On to the hotel. We arrived to see Prosseroo, Chip, the Bacik Bros, etc. We left for the "House of Rules" and got there at 7:15. Chris Campbell greets me with a laminate to get in early as doors were at 8:00! BTW, his team WON the golf tournament and he had the long drive of the day! Congratulations to Chris Campbell! Too bad he spent his energy on the course as he never made it to the end of the show! DP made it till the end of the show. Oh that's right, he slept through the golf tournament. I tried to call him in the afternoon to see how he hit em' that morning but, oh yeah, he lost his phone!
>
> I got inside and was greeted by Chris Rabold. Just after I got in, Charles, DP, Kelly, and Miny arrived. We set up FOB on the left corner of the SBD area. This was my first JB & Friends show ever. Now I was psyched, as I was within an hour of a show that until 19 hours ago, I had no thoughts of going to! Michael Nichols opened up with a short set. It did not blow me away.
>
> Just before 10:00 p.m., JB strolled up on stage. Of course by now the floor was packed! I realized that this was a perfect opportunity for many people to come to a show, get drunk, and turn into assholes! Lots of yelling and screaming. I was amazed at how many people showed up, got drunk, and stood around yapping! JB opened up with Old Joe. He played sit down acoustic guitar by himself. Next up was the Van Morrison nugget, Stoned Me. It turned into a sing-a-long. I enjoyed the Space Wrangler as JB stretched it out for about 8 1/2 minutes. Jojo joined into the frey for Don't Wanna Lose the Crowd. Things got interesting as Buck Williams joined JB, Jojo, and Jojo's bass player for a very nice Smokestack Lightnin'. Buck played the hell out of the harmonica. I have never seen him sit in in all the years seeing him at shows. From that point on, the show took shape. Our buddy Sam Holt came up for a duet with JB. He played electric guitar. The Barstools>Grandma's Hands>Barstools was money! A great way to end the set. Thanks Sammy!
>
> Next up was Jojo's Mardi Gras Band. I must say that I totally enjoyed this set! The opener was Tippatina. It sure sounded like it could have been early, as it sounded just like the version from the Eastwood Theatre, Indianapolis from 1994. The Ray Charles Mess Around was very tight. He brought up JB for a nice version of Lonely Avenue. And of course, he closed it down with Red Beans Cookin'. A very solid 63 minutes!
>
> To close out the show, we saw the Colonel with his Codetalkers. As was the last time I saw him at Smith's on 1/6/2006, he again sat and played the steel guitar. What you heard mostly was Bobby Lee Rogers. Colonel Bruce did get his licks in from time to time. I saw the HAmmond B3 all night on stage and was thinking that Ike Stubblefield would be with them. I did see him at Smith's last month and it added a lot of texture. After the opener, he invited JB up for a well accepted pair of songs, Fixin' to Die Rag and Spoonful. JB was feeling no pain! Other highlights were a bluesy Same Thing, I'm So Glad, Welcome to Hawaii, and Time is Free. A very solid 84 minutes of music. The stage crew did a great job clearing and setting up the stage in a very timely manner.

> A very nice 5 hours of music! Great hangin' FOB with Chip, Charles and Mindi, DP and Kelli, Drew, and Kelly, Melissa, and Stacy. Prosseroo "the man who defies gravity, was in fine form. I heard from Stacy, that he was passed out on the steps behind the board at times. He was laying on the sidewalk out front after the show. Melissa told me at 1:45 that she was tired and had to go. I told her it was almost over, but no, she left us. So, we squeezed 8 of us into Chip's small car to go back to the hotel. We stayed awake telling stories and the usual partying. I layed down from 4:15 til 4:45 when Stacy got me up as we had to leave for the airport by 5:00 am. Great having Home Team (Eli & Gene) in the house!!!! Also great seeing Brooks and David from Orlando, Sic Rick who streamed the entire show, Jessica, the Bacik Bros, David Dean, Kevin and Robin from Dallas, Heather from Knoxville, Randy and Terri, and all the other freaks!
>
> I called Delta at about 4:00 a.m., to find out there were 30 seats available on the 7:00 plane to Atlanta. It was a 767, and believe it or not, I got the last seat! Good thing cause standby on a Sunday is no picnic, the later it gets, the less chance for a seat! In Atlanta, the plane to Columbus had 40 empty seats, so I got an exit row aisle, actually the whole row! After I got my bag, I then had to drive almost 3 hours back to Toledo to be to work at 3:00 p.m. Ouch!
