Widespread Panic Memphis 10/5/2005

>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> After a fun night last night, it was time for round 2 at the Isle of Mud. As I have lately, I try not to have too high an expectation level. Charles, Jim, DP, and I went down to "our spot" in the 11th row. Dick was all over us and warned us 1/2 hour before the show, "If they see ya taping, they are coming after you"! After 20 minutes, he grabbed 4 goons and cmae back. He was screaming at Jim. Jim reacted as if he could not hear a thing, and this incensed Dick worse. Needless to say, we relocated, started the gear, and returned down front to enjoy the show. I actually had a great time.
>
> The ist set started off very promising with the combo of Slippin'>Worry! Old Neighborhood is very funky and bouncy, but I think I have caught too many of them. The band shifted acoustically for 3 songs. They closed the set very strong with a Ride Me High>Let it Bleed. All Time Low got the 2nd set off to a rockin' start, followed by Good People. The meat of the set was a killer Drivin' > Papa's Home sandwich. Things got interesting as some of the Burnside Exploration appeared on stage for Junior. During the song, added some rap. He grabbed the crowd and had them going. The Burnsiders stayed on for Red Hot Mama. After a spooky 2nd Skin, we got a nice Pusherman that led into a Monstosity. Not my favorite song, but the jam had the intensity of the jam at the end of a Wrangler. The encore was short, but I did hear my first Follow You Down. After the show, I got dumped by Melissa and Stacey at the monorail station as I was escorting the Panic Phans for Phood $. After that, we hung out at the hotel with our guests.
>
> Fun hangin' with Flynn and Heidi, Bobby and Jessica, Melissa, Stacey, Jim, Kelli and DP, Charles and Mindy, Madison and Amy, Pete, Hugh, Wade, Eric, and everyone else! John Callery, missing in action!
>
> After a late night, we were up at 5:00. I dropped Charles and Mindy at the airport at 6:00. I had a few hours to kill, so, off to Tunica for some early morning blackjack! I played on a couple of tables, $5, and $10. I went thru my first $100 in about 45 minutes. The second $100 took only about 20 minutes, yikes. I thru down a $50 and was down to my last chips. I rallied and hit a hot streak. After 25 minutes, I got it all back + $15.00. That was good enough for me, so I headed back to Memphis to fly out.

Widespread Panic Memphis 10/4/2005

>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> I sent for mail order for these shows as I love this venue! It is a special place to see the Panic! I arrived Monday night and got to see BB King! I already sent a post about that show. Jim, Minie, Charles, and I went on a field trip to Interstate BBQ. The "Sampler Plate" is to die for! I was busy being a ticket broker just before we went in, as Nate sent me 4 sets of ducats to peddle. It was easier than I thought. We go in as doors opened. We saw Dick, our security "friend". We picked a spot DFC in the 11th row. Charles, DP, and I hung up toward the section until almost time for Panic. Jim and Mindy held the spot down below. Burnside Exploration was the opener. They didn't do a heck of a lot for me. The second song, the guitarist broke a string and they had to stop. Low budget, only one guitar. Sam stepped in and gave him one of George's guitars and fixed the string. The only song I recognized was All Night Long. They played about 35 minutes, plenty.
>
> Panic took the stage at about 7:45. There were lots of empty seats on the upper "wings" of the venue. By the middle of the set, the venue was full. They opened with a rowdy Thousage>Rebirtha. From Hatfield on, they hit their stride! A Bowl Legged in the middle of the set is always nice. Surprise was split with a drum solo. The Vacation out of the Surprise was a very sweet, unexpected choice for me.
>
> The second set had it's moments. The highlights for me was the jam out of Solid Rock, Mercy, and Pilgrims. It never came all the way together. I enjoyed the first set more than the second set. It is always nice getting a 3 song encore, especially when one song is a barstools, even though it had a rough start. I am not sure if I care for the Vipor. I always enjoyed the Bromberg version, Leftover Salmon version, and even the Ekoostik Hookah version better than the Panic version. A guest appeared on keyboards during Fishwater. He was unawhere that there was a mini drums in the middle of the song, so we got a drums/keyboard duet. All in all, a Panic show at the Isle of Mud, is always a fun time. Fun hangin' with Flynn and Heidi, Bobby and Jessica, Melissa, Kelli and DP, Charles and Mindy, Madison and Amy, Pete, Hugh, Wade, Eric, and everyone else!

Lucinda Williams Ann Arbor 10/2/2005

>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> I have been on a dry spell since seeing Ripplefest 15 days ago. I decided to drive up to Michigan after a full day in the office. I stopped by Whole Foods for a pre-show snack. Got there at 7:20 for the 7:30 show. I scored a 21st row ticket for $15.00 and went in. No pat down or detectors. I hit the rest room and wired up. CC Adcock, from Lafayette, La. opened a bit after 7:45. It was a duet and they were entertaining. Lots of Creole tunes.
>
> Lucinda hit the stage to a boistrous Sunday night crowd, lots of howlers! I have only seen her a handful of times. She did a few of her standards and a bunch of new tunes. She has written 24 new ones over the past 12 months. I enjoyed the Sweet Baby, What If, Jailhouse Tears, and a great cover of Bobby Gentry's Ode to Billy Joe. CC Adcock was invited up to join on a few songs. She came out for a second encore and I had to switch tapes on the fly, nothing got missed though. Here is how it went down:

B.B. King Memphis 10/3/2005

>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> First of all, Happy and healthy La'Shana Tova, Happy New Year! What can one say about seeing this Legend. I remember seeing him at the Auditorium Theatre in Rochester in May of 1975(no old jokes please). I got into town late afternoon. I called B.B. King's Blues Club. I spoke with Gracie and she had 3 SRO tickets left. I hauled out the plastic and grabbed one immediately. I got over there and went in. I met Gracie and thanked her. The place was already packed before the two openers. Very hot as well as BB does not believe in air conditioning for a performance. Both openers were local performers. Preston Shannon opened and played a 40 minute set. Next up was Ruby Wilson, The "Queen of Beale Street". She played a 50 minute set from 8:30-9:20. She covered some classic R & B such as Use Me, Will it Go Round in Circles, Tell Me Something Good, Let's Get it On, I Wannna Be Next to You, and We Brought the Funk.
>
> The stage hands got the stage ready and BB's band took thespotlight just after 9:45. His band came on just after 9:45. What a polished act as they have been together forever! They played a couple of instrumentals to get things warmed up. Before I forget, I thought I had the perfect spot upthe stairs in the corner in front of right stack. Right in the beginning, I got popped. I got shut down by a security guard. Within 30 seconds, the guy that was in front of me returned. I would bet my mortgage that that #@!^%!^*#! turned me in. I was always taught to be persistant. Within a minute or 2, I found myself on the floor, DFC about 25 feet in front of BB King's chair. It was very hot, very crowded, and very vocal. I realized immediately that the next 2 1/2 hours would be some work. I was behind the tables in front of the stage, and in front of the bar. I probably will show some bruises from getting bumped all night long!
>
> And then the Master himself took the stage. Talk about stage presence, he probably wrote the book! He had a stranglehold on the audience the entire show as he held court telling stories, jokes, and playing the blues. You got goosebumps watching him strap on Lucille! He played many of the standards you would expect such as Bad Case of Love, I Need You, Rock Me Baby, Ain't that Just Like a Woman, How Blue Can You Get, Key to the Highway, and The Thrill is Gone. Just before Thrill, he acknowledged JB and Samuel L. Jackson were in the House. He did a nice cover of Willie Nelson's Night Life. At the end of his set as he customarily does, he invited anyone in the house with an instrument on stage. What ensued next was a killer jam session! On stage were 5 guitarists, 3 keyboardists, 2 saxists, a drummer, a bass player, Ruby Wilson, and the legend himself. They played for about 40 minutes. It was awesome. When I walked out of the club, I felt I got every penny of my money's worth! Here is how it went down:

> Got a good review on the Trey/Rolling Stones show tonight in Charlottesville from Carrington. They had a bomb scare and stopped play for about 45 minutes. Did they mistake Craig's 744 for an explosive device? They played lots of their hits with a few others scattered in. Start Me Up to open, Sweet Virginia, Midnight Rambler, Tumblin' Dice, Sympathy, Satisfaction, Can't Always Get What you Want, etc.
>
> Excellent show according to Mark, the New Riders in Teaneck, N.J. Classic cuts from way back. Henry opener, Garden of Eden, Louisiana Lady, Portland Woman, Panama Red, I Don't Know You, Last Lonely Eagle, Willie and the Hand Jive, Sutter's Mill, What You Gonna Do, Dirty Business, and a Rainy Day Women encore. Very nice, hope to hear a tape, hint, hint.

> Myself tonight, just in from seeing the Braves tee off on the Rocket! Hung with Sam and Prosseroo behind home plate! Could it be Clemens's last game?
