Gov't Mule Columbus 6-22-2005

Gov't Mule Columbus 6-22-2005
>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> Another adventure on the road! Talk about hard core, Zee booked a flight to see this one show! He was to arrive in Dayton where I am working the Ohio State Trapshoot for the entire week. I was to pick him up at 4:18 and we would drive to Columbus and be at the showe by 6:00. One problem, his plane got cancelled. It was 2:30 and too late to catch the 2:55 to Columbus, so they put him on a plane to Columbus arriving at 6:10, no problem. Wrong, the plane kept getting delayed. Long story short, he got a cab to the show after he landed and was there halfway through the Hookah set. As I walked in, I saw a very familiar sight at the soundboard, Innis! Nice to see him working with the Mule! Brad and I were already set up on the rail with Nate's rig. We recorded the Duo who played for a tad over 40 minutes. They were okay, about the same as I remembered them. They played a 44:10 set, I have no clue on the setlist though.
>
> Next up was the hometown favorite, Ekoostik Hookah. I figured we would get a 45 minute to an hour set. I was wrong as they played about 90 minutes. They got rolling nicely. I was hoping to see Warren join these guys, but it just was not meant to be. They did pull out my favorite, Keepin' Time. A nice Rollercoaster, Bone, and a great Dragonfly! They were definately rockin' and really helped to sell tickets to the show!
>
> Nate was very much bent out of shape that the show was moved in doors. I ran into Slim and spoke with him out front. I asked him if it was due to ticket sales and he confirmed it. The bullshit excuse the venue gave was so the bands could jam longer due to curfew. What a crock. It was a beautiful day and night! Oh well, as Warren would later sing.
>
> Time for the main event. What a difference the past 12 months in the setlists! They are really mixing it up to say the least. If I saw the setlist without being there, I would say who picked these and put them together. lots of obscure stuff. The first set was solid. I always love a show that has a Patchwork Quilt! West Coast Groovies has been avoiding me for the last couple of years. The How Many More Years with the Higher ground verse was a great way to close the first set. The second set was the heat! Monkey Hill>Want You So Bad/She's So Heavy was top notch. The Oh Well (my first)>Temporary Saint was great. I know we have all seen Soulshine 75 times, but this one was different. It had a very long extended jam.
>
> The encore had Danny opening the Beautifully Broken with a trumpet. This slid nicely into the familiar licks of Let it Rock, also my first! Have they ever done this one before? A great show, Zee and I got our moneysworth! We headed back to Dayton, got to the hotel in time for a 2 hour nap. Up at 4:30 so he could catch his plane, and me to work from 5:30 am til 11:00 pm, ouch! That is the reason for the delay as I have been swamped. It was great hangin' with N8, K8, Zee, Brad, Pete, KC, Dan and Michelle, Tim, Jess, Roger, Jay, Scribbler, Russell, Jason, Rob, Mik, Brian, Alex, kildo and Karen, KB, and several other friends! Todd Snider Dayton 6-19-2005

Todd Snider Dayton 6-19-2005
>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> After sharing the awesome experience of seeing Steve and Ginger get married, I had to fly back to Dayton for work Sunday. After work, I decided to head over to the Canal Street Tavern to see Todd. If you haven't been to the CST, it is a great place to see a show. The owner is a gracious host named Mick. He remembered me from taping a Dave Nelson show about 4 years ago and leaving him a tape. I believe the venue holds about 150, and I think every spot was taken tonight. Steve did a fine job on the soundboard. Not much to acoustic guitar and vocals as he told me, but it did come out great. Who is sitting next to me at the bar as I am setting up shop, Brando, Gregg, and Doug. I always enjoy going to a show and seeing familiar faces. If I go to a show and do not see a sole I know, it has to be very, very, obscure. I can't remember this happening for several years anywhere in the country.
>
> We were treated to an opener I never heard of, Tamara Bedricky from Detroit. She played acoustic guitar and had a very nice voice. She was a bit nervous at first but settled in nicely. I got to meet her and will send her a cd of the show this week. I hope to catch her again in the near future. I recommend the same for you. I liked the cover of the Ryan Adams song. I liked the Million Miles as well.
>
> Todd took the stage to a roar of the crowd. I would say most of the crowd had seen him at least once if not more. I remember seeing him in '97 or '98 opening for LOS/WSP in Cleveland. He and Drew came out with Panic that night. He is always very entertaining. His stories and witty song writing get the crowd going. He played 2 sets, the first shorter than the second, concluding with a Side Show Blues. He came back after a short break and played for about an hour. The Train Song, Doublewide Blues, and Rocket Fuel were well accepted. He even made mention of Widespread Panic during Straight White American Male. I do not know all the titles, so if you have the setlist, please send it. The sound was perfect, thanks again Steve. Here is how it went down:

The Doors Columbus 6-15-2005

The Doors Columbus 6-15-2005
> >
> > Hey Y'All,
> >
> > After a long meeting with 2 of my clients, I headed down 75 South from Toledo to Dayton at about 3:35. A funny thing happened, I spoke to Nate. He had a bunch of free pavilion tix for the Strange Days Fest in Columbus. Hmm, should I drive to Dayton and get a decent night's rest, or head to Columbus, see the show, crash at Nate's, and get up early and drive to Dayton? I met Nate, grabbed my ticket and headed to Polaris. The crowd going in was very sparse. I studied the security guards to determine whicjh one to go through. I picked a blonde woman and no sweat! I went to our section and scammed to the middle. I could not get in the lower section so settled just above the VIP seats, right center. I caught the last song of the Yardbirds, I'm a Man. I did not recognize anyone in the band.
> >
> > Next up was the Vanilla Fudge. They played an interesting combo cover of a Curtis Mayfield > Zombies, very interesting. Next up was Steppenwolf. The Fudge and the Wolf both played their big hits as expected. The Wolf ended with Carpet Ride>Born to be Wild as you might have imagined. BTW BC, I was not the oldest one in the crowd by any stretch of the imagination! Nate finally arrived as my double aa's were spent. Afteer reloading, we headed back to the seats I grabbed.
> >
> > The Doors came on and played a short set. They were better than I expected, Krieger still has some licks left and Ray did a great job on the ivories. Ian portrayed Morrison and looked the part but did not carry the band like Jim. They extended the songs a lot more than I expected. I would have enjoyed a few more. The crowd was loud and into it. I only knew 2 people at the show. By the end of the show, I would say there were only about 5,500 people there. Here is how it went down:

Dave Matthews Band Columbus 6-8-2005

Dave Matthews Band Columbus 6-8-2005
>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> Night two of DMB. Tonight was a stark difference in many/all ways. You can't tailgate at Polaris anymore. The State Police brought in an RV for processing arrests. Several undercover police. We witnessed 2 young girls and 1 guy getting cuffed and hauled off for underage drinking. Our Beer was poured in either Wendy's or Griner's cups! The thunder showers arrived shortly after we reached the lot. It rained for about an hour, most of Robert's set. I did not mention, but my old friend from back in the LOS days, Steve, is now working as a Manager for Robert. Way to go Steve! Congrats to you and Marci on the upcoming baby as well! Jeff, Pete, Freddie, and I got settled in the lower center section for Robert. A security manager approached us as we were setting up asking to keep the mics low. We were told we could raise them if no one complains. At Dave shows, they are usually run 12-18 feet up to avoid all the screaming. We just felt trouble, so after Robert's set, I found a couple on the right side to trade with as we would hit the stacks. As soon as Dave hit the stage, a #@!*^(%^$ security manager started yelling at us to bring 'em down because 4,000 people were complaining. What a crock of $%^#@*! We brought them down to 8 feet. Three songs later, he was back in our face. Now we were down to head level. Security was hasseling folks all night. Pete got bounced from behind us after spending about 2 hours of Dave's set there because his ticket was a few rows back. They were throwing people out of empty seats if they did not have those tickets. Very ugly scene. Only 2 rigs tonight, ours, and Mike's. He concurred with us on the hassels of security. He has taped Dave the past 7 years there, and never has it been like it was tonight.
>
> Tonight's show was much better. Robert put in a solid 41 minutes. He threw us a nice Voodoo Chile, Beverly Hills Cop Theme, and Stomp Your Feet. Again, he had Chad? from the crowd play a few riffs. The band also switched around on instruments tonight. Robert played everything except Jason's Keyboards tonight.
>
> Dave hit the stage at about 8:25. Lots of good old standards! So Much to Say and #41 right out of the gate. There were 6 repeats, but not the real slow songs. A 25 minute Seek Up, smoked! Robert joined the band for the last 2 songs. The second was a repeat from when he sat in last night, Lousiana Bayou. All in all, the set selections were much better tonight. The energy and flow was much smoother, we weren't bogged down by too much slow stuff. Good seeing Jeff, Pete, Freddie, Mike, Dr. Will, and James from Mobile! It was too bad about the 180 degree change by security's attitude tonight. I will not be in a hurry to go back to Polaris in Columbus again! Here is how it went down:

Dave Matthews Band Columbus 6-7-2005

Dave Matthews Band Columbus 6-7-2005
>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> Time to welcome Freddie and Pete to the Z-Man Chronicles! Here at the Fisher Arms in Columbus. My gracious hosts are N8 and K8! Jeff T., Fred, and Pete picked me up at Nate's around 5:00 and we headed north on I-71 to the Germain Ampitheatre. We had excellent tickets and set up in the 8th row. Robert Randolph treated us to an entertaining 45 minute set. Nice versions of Gonna Have a Good Time, Love, and Purple Haze. Robert invited a couple of Jebronis from the crowd to play guitar for a brief shining moment. Nothing worth watching. It is fun watching everyone in the band switch off instruments as Robert plays everything during one song. I must say he has a great stage presence! I always enjoy watching him work the crowd.
>
> After a 54 minute swithout, Dave took the stage at about 8:36. He opened with Everyday. It got pretty slow after that. They played a bunch of their new cd, and most of it is very slow. The momentum just wasn't there. It picked up for a nice Too Much and a nice long Bartender. Butch got to stretch out for a very nice solo. It was probably the longest I've ever seen him play. Glad he is getting the room to manuever. The new toon Stand Up, kind of reminds me of NMAS "Eyes". Things were looking up as Robert Randolph joined the frey. He pumped up the new Louisiana Bayou. He left the stage to return 2 songs later. He should have stayed to keep it rolling! He did come back for a set closing Watchtower, my call. The encore was also very nice, Smooth Rider, followed by a 19:51 Two Step! Again, Butch was given a nice solo. The last hour of the show was much better than the first 1 1/2 hours. Not one of the better Dave shows I have ever seen. Actually, one of the weakest. Only 5 taping rigs tonight. The taping and security was very cool, but that would change drastically 24 hours later! Commander Cody Atlanta 6/4/2005

Commander Cody Atlanta 6/4/2005
>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> Sorry for the delay, work's got the best of me since last weekend. I contacted Mark Emerick, guitarist extroidinaire of Commander Cody. He graciously put me on the list for the Blind Willies show. I arrived in time to chew the fat with Mark, Rick, Steve, and of course our fearless leader, the Commander! Always lots of laughs and stories hangin' with George! I set up on the soundboard. Unfortunately, due to the board and the room, they only mic'ed the keyboards and vocals. It sounded good there, but not on tape. Where were the RadioSchoeps when I needed them! The place was packed and tonight, they were playing 3 short sets. Between sets, I went back to hang and get ready for the next set.
>
> They came on at about 10:00 and opened with Too Much Fun. Many usuals, but I enjoyed the end of the set featuring a pair of Hoyt Axton covers coming out of Don't Let Go. The Ray Charles cover Mess Around was a nice set ender.
>
> The second set was short and sweet. Steve and Mark handled the vocals on a couple and the set ended with Hot Rod Lincoln. Of course the crowd went nuts. It was a different perspective being on the low side of the median age of the crowd (stick that in your pipe and smoke it Jeff, Jeff, BC, and Nate!) I asked George why the set was short and he said I didn't know to follow the HRL.
>
> The third set was chocked full of favorites as well. I enjoyed the show, said goodbye, and headed off with my wife to Waffle House for early am nourishment. Here is how it went down:
