John Bell and Friends Orlando 2/25/2006

John Bell and Friends Orlando 2/25/2006
>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> Well, it happened after some contortions. Last night at about 1:15 a.m., near the end of the Yonder Mountain show, I asked Drew and Kelly if they would be back tomorrow night for round 2. They said they were going to JB in Orlando. They asked if I was going. I told them I wasn't about to spend big bucks for a plane ticket to see 1 show. Drew is a pilot for Delta. He said maybe I can help with a "Buddy Pass". I was not in a real coherant state of mind, nor was he. He had a 2 hour ride back to Cincy and told me to think about it. I sent texts to Charles and Stacey to find a ticket, a ride from the airport, and a place to stay. Within minutes, that was all confirmed. I was already on the guest list for the YMSB show the following night. I called Drew at 3:45 am. There were 2 flights that had less than 5 seats available. Problem was, I had to fly standby. The price was airport fees and tax, a mere $78.00 round trip. Looks like a possibility.
>
> I slept from 5:00 until about 7:00. I called Drew and he got my personal info including credit card. I left for the airport for a 12:20 flight. A 50 seat plane on Chataqua Airlines (Delta Partner), and 49 seats were sold and all 49 passengers were there. They would not release the 50th seat without passing weights and balances. The plane was already 1 hour late. My mindset was, if I don't get on the plane, I go back to the Newport and have a great night with YMSB! Either way, I come out a winner. Ten minutes prior to take off, they put me on the plane. I arrived at about 3:45 pm. Melissa and Stacey picked the old man up at the airport just before 4:00 p.m. On to the hotel. We arrived to see Prosseroo, Chip, the Bacik Bros, etc. We left for the "House of Rules" and got there at 7:15. Chris Campbell greets me with a laminate to get in early as doors were at 8:00! BTW, his team WON the golf tournament and he had the long drive of the day! Congratulations to Chris Campbell! Too bad he spent his energy on the course as he never made it to the end of the show! DP made it till the end of the show. Oh that's right, he slept through the golf tournament. I tried to call him in the afternoon to see how he hit em' that morning but, oh yeah, he lost his phone!
>
> I got inside and was greeted by Chris Rabold. Just after I got in, Charles, DP, Kelly, and Miny arrived. We set up FOB on the left corner of the SBD area. This was my first JB & Friends show ever. Now I was psyched, as I was within an hour of a show that until 19 hours ago, I had no thoughts of going to! Michael Nichols opened up with a short set. It did not blow me away.
>
> Just before 10:00 p.m., JB strolled up on stage. Of course by now the floor was packed! I realized that this was a perfect opportunity for many people to come to a show, get drunk, and turn into assholes! Lots of yelling and screaming. I was amazed at how many people showed up, got drunk, and stood around yapping! JB opened up with Old Joe. He played sit down acoustic guitar by himself. Next up was the Van Morrison nugget, Stoned Me. It turned into a sing-a-long. I enjoyed the Space Wrangler as JB stretched it out for about 8 1/2 minutes. Jojo joined into the frey for Don't Wanna Lose the Crowd. Things got interesting as Buck Williams joined JB, Jojo, and Jojo's bass player for a very nice Smokestack Lightnin'. Buck played the hell out of the harmonica. I have never seen him sit in in all the years seeing him at shows. From that point on, the show took shape. Our buddy Sam Holt came up for a duet with JB. He played electric guitar. The Barstools>Grandma's Hands>Barstools was money! A great way to end the set. Thanks Sammy!
>
> Next up was Jojo's Mardi Gras Band. I must say that I totally enjoyed this set! The opener was Tippatina. It sure sounded like it could have been early, as it sounded just like the version from the Eastwood Theatre, Indianapolis from 1994. The Ray Charles Mess Around was very tight. He brought up JB for a nice version of Lonely Avenue. And of course, he closed it down with Red Beans Cookin'. A very solid 63 minutes!
>
> To close out the show, we saw the Colonel with his Codetalkers. As was the last time I saw him at Smith's on 1/6/2006, he again sat and played the steel guitar. What you heard mostly was Bobby Lee Rogers. Colonel Bruce did get his licks in from time to time. I saw the HAmmond B3 all night on stage and was thinking that Ike Stubblefield would be with them. I did see him at Smith's last month and it added a lot of texture. After the opener, he invited JB up for a well accepted pair of songs, Fixin' to Die Rag and Spoonful. JB was feeling no pain! Other highlights were a bluesy Same Thing, I'm So Glad, Welcome to Hawaii, and Time is Free. A very solid 84 minutes of music. The stage crew did a great job clearing and setting up the stage in a very timely manner.
>
> A very nice 5 hours of music! Great hangin' FOB with Chip, Charles and Mindi, DP and Kelli, Drew, and Kelly, Melissa, and Stacy. Prosseroo "the man who defies gravity, was in fine form. I heard from Stacy, that he was passed out on the steps behind the board at times. He was laying on the sidewalk out front after the show. Melissa told me at 1:45 that she was tired and had to go. I told her it was almost over, but no, she left us. So, we squeezed 8 of us into Chip's small car to go back to the hotel. We stayed awake telling stories and the usual partying. I layed down from 4:15 til 4:45 when Stacy got me up as we had to leave for the airport by 5:00 am. Great having Home Team (Eli & Gene) in the house!!!! Also great seeing Brooks and David from Orlando, Sic Rick who streamed the entire show, Jessica, the Bacik Bros, David Dean, Kevin and Robin from Dallas, Heather from Knoxville, Randy and Terri, and all the other freaks!
>
> I called Delta at about 4:00 a.m., to find out there were 30 seats available on the 7:00 plane to Atlanta. It was a 767, and believe it or not, I got the last seat! Good thing cause standby on a Sunday is no picnic, the later it gets, the less chance for a seat! In Atlanta, the plane to Columbus had 40 empty seats, so I got an exit row aisle, actually the whole row! After I got my bag, I then had to drive almost 3 hours back to Toledo to be to work at 3:00 p.m. Ouch!

Yonder Mountain String Band Columbus 2/24/2006

>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> My night was off to a rocky start. After setting up the gear, I stepped into the men's room so I could get some relief. As I am peeing in the stall, a security goon looks over the door and says "give it up". I said what! He said you are smoking weed, hand it over you are done here. As I am peeing, I kicked open the door into him, turn and show him my tool in my hand and said, "This is all I've got smoking"! I was incensed. I said why don't you smell my breath and tell me if I am smoking, I am not that stupid, or ignorant as you ASSHOLE! He said I thought it was you. I demanded an apoligy and told him to go #@$!$ yourself! I guess I was pretty upset to say the least!
>
> It was a packed house, probably oversold by at least a coup[le of hundred! It could be the last time the boys play there as they are really turnin' the corner and are outgrowing this great venue. Always fun to see Tim, Roger, Brian, Dubba, Tape Cat, and Tape Kitten. Great hangin FOB with Seth, Alex, Mike, Drew & Kelly, and Brad! Brad introduced me to a girl he knew as his Grandfather! I said father is one thing. He said he is Nate's son, that makes him my grandson! Ouch!
>
> Tim O'Brien opened and had Danny Barnes with him!. I noticed after the first song, Tim broke a mandolin string. Tim, said, " I still have 7 left to play with! It is always good seeing Tim. I was hoping he would sit in with Yonder.
>
> YMSB came on a bit after 10:00. A very solid first set I was surprised that they covered 2 Leftover Salmon tunes. Drew must have been an influence on Jeff for the New Year's shows! I always love to hear Winds of Wyoming. The Mother's Only Son was very jammed out. Lots of good leads in there.
>
> After a half hour break, the boys hit the stage with some extra help. Tim and Danny joined into the frey! The Death trick went for quite a ride as they jammed it out nicely. Tim always the Dylan fan, did a great job on Tombstone Blues. Girlfriend is Better was another of the many covers they took care of. As I recall, I can't remember seeing YMSB pull off this many covers. There wasn't a weak song in the entire 2nd set.
>
> As usual, Ben did a great job with the sound! With him at the controls, the sound is always consistant. Thanks for offering me the SBD patch. I borrowed Nate's Schoeps MK4 and decided to run FOB into the 722. It sounds boss! I began talking to Drew and Kelly about plans for tomorrow night's show. He was flying to Orlando for the JB and Friends show. Hmmmm.

Jefferson Starship Detroit 2/23/2006

>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> I was hoping to catch one ot the 2 shows near me, either Cleveland at the "House of Rules", or the Majestic in Detroit. After getting stuck at work til almost 11 pm the night of Cleveland, I had no choice but the Motor City. I left work at 4:30 and headed up I-75. I stopped by and picked up some Pork Fried Rice and Spicy Chicken with Broccoli as man can not live on music alone! As I arrived, the line going in had already formed. These musicians are old, even older than me if you can believe it. But, they represent a slice of music history. I can remember a trip to Radio City in October of 1974 with Mark and Eli to catch these guys! I'll never forget that night! A GA show and we got into NYC at 8:30am, hit the liquor store and got on line. We ended up about 10th row DFC and the rest is history. I was definitely not the oldest in the crowd tonight. The average age had to be over 40!
>
> They were doing a cd release of the show if you bought a gold circle ticket, so, no soundboard. I was the only taper until my "newest" friend, Steve from England arrived. I was able to haphazzardly get the soundcheck on the fly as I was pulling out my gear.
>
> I thought I recognized the guy at the soundboard. After Steve told me that Michael Gamon was the tour manager, it all hit me. I met Michael in THIS venue 6 years ago for the Blue Floyd show, also in February. Then I realized that is where I met the sound guy, Thomas, as we were both patched out of the board that night. Small world!
>
> Tom Constanten opened up with about a half hour set. He played solo until most everyone else joined him for a jammin' Deal. I haven't seen TC in at least 10-15 years. He looks the same except his white hair is very long. The Mountains of the Moon>Dark Star opener sounded as good as ever.
>
> Next up was Country Joe. Of course there was one yahoo yelling give me an F, Give me a U, give me a C, give me a K, what's that spell, as Joe took the stage. Joe also played a bout a half hour. His set was totally solo. As usual, his songs had some political overtones.
>
> On to the meat of the evening. The Starship took the stage at about 9:15. Cudos to the stage crew for keeping the show rolling as there were only minutes between each set! They opened up with Somebody to Love and Crown of Creation. The whole show sprinl\kled in their hits with many of my older favorites. What i found out is that they do a different set each night. That is the way to go! They even pulled out Darkness Smiling, an oldy from the Great Society, the precursor to the Airplane. With David Freiberg back in the fold, they played a couple of Quicksilver Messanger Band staples. Great hearing some of the Baron von Tollbooth stuff! One of my favorite moments, was the Have You Seen the Saucers sandwiched around Have You Seen the Stars Tonight. My only regret was I wish I could have seen the whole 2nd side of Blows Against the Empire as I did a couple of years ago. That is when I met John Murray who did sound for them.
>
> Being in Detroit, it is customary for me to hit the MGM casino and try to win my ticket money at Blackjack. I sat down at 1st base at a $15.00 table. My first 2 hands, 16 busts. Next hand, 16 stay and lose(gun shy). Next hand 14 bust. In 2 1/2 minutes I am out $60.00. Next hand I pushed with an 18. That actually made me happy! I started to get on a roll. It took me 16 minutes and 39 seconds, but I walked out with a $70.00 profit! The drive back and in bed by 2:30.

Nine Inch Nails Toledo 2/21/2006

Nine Inch Nails Toledo 2/21/2006
>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> How do I start this? Was it a bad dream? After catering down in Findlay since early am, I came back to Toledo to stop by the Corporate Office. By then it was almost 5:00. I headed down to the Sports Arena, our venue that we own as well as the hockey team, as well as operate the concessions. We were expecting about 5,500 - 6,000 freaks for the Nine Inch Nails show. I met my boss and we helped our manager with finishing touches. We were expecting to sell a ton of beer. During the opener, we moved and changed lots of kegs! My boss and I enjoyed watching the FREAK show. Lots of guys in black skirts, spiked hair, pierced body parts galore, women scantily clad, fishnets, etc. I never saw so much black lipstick! Near the end of intermission, I was debating whether to run the show. I said to myself, WHY? Why does a person climb a mountain, because it is there. You probably figured out where this is going.
>
> I slipped out the back door to my Jeep to grab my RadioSchoeps. Back inside, wire up, and pick a seat. The sound in there always sucks! The lights go out, earplugs in, and I'm rollin'. After 1 song, I said to myself, WHY? After 3-4 songs, I figure I will make it to the Encore, if I can hang on, and slip out. If you've ever been here, there is one way in, and one way out of the lot, and I was not getting trapped for an encore. Too high a price to pay. This all backfired after 1 hour and 39 minutes. Lights ON, and NO encore. Ouch. Add insult to injury.
>
> Well they came on at about 8:38. I guessed on the titles of the songs. I must admit, I did not recognize one song! The last time I saw them was August 1994 when we worked Woodstock. They are very hard. Very little jamming, no solos, etc. That was yesterday, today is a new day. BTW, that was my last NIN concert!

Commander Cody Atlanta 2/17/2006

>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> I had conversed with Pat during the week and we were planning on me meeting him and Robin at Blind Willies for Commander Cody on Friday. George, "The Commander", has been a friend, and I always make an effort to see him when I am within' the radius of travel. This night would be even better, as it was a home town show. By the time I found a parking spot and went in, it was after 9:15. I walked in the front door and saw that Robin, Pat, and Cheryl grabbed a table straight back. It was the last one! As I walked in, there he was in all his grandeur, the Commander! He came over to greet me. I set up the mics and made all my connections and then headed backstage to see George. I don't care how many times I get to see and hang with him, I always enjoy our most interesting conversations. What I probably should be doing is recording those cherished moments! I introduced Pat and Robin to George and the rest of the guys. Pat was reminiscing about seeing the Lost Planet Airmen at Red Rocks in 1978. George remembered it well. Between sets, Cheryl got to meet him as well. We did not get o talk about horse racing as this time of year there is not much to talk about.
>
> On to the show itself. The place was pretty much full as they took the stage. The opening tune set the tone for the evening, Too Much Fun. By the 3rd song, the place was gorged as people continued to come in to see this legend (and not in his own mind)! The crowd was rowdy as is expected and they were dancing and having fun. If you have been to Blind Willies, there ain't much room to dance. They rambled thru the archives as they played. The western swing of Smoke That Cigarette, to Mark doing Truck Drivin' Man, and closing the first set with a tribute to Hoyt Axton's Lightnin' Bar, had the joint hopping. First set break, and that means go back and check on George! I think George just loves playin' the bar/club circuit. There is always someone there to offer him a beer and a shot all evening. During the break in which Pat and I were talking to George, he made my evening. I have had him on my chronicles list for well over a year. He told me how much he enjoys reading my reviews and stories. He said I write similar to Hemmingway! I figured since he never responds, he probably just deletes them as they come. It made me crack up, but it was nice to hear. I guess a few Heineken's and some choice shots of Tequila, and you never know what he might say!
>
> Set two started out with the "Boogie Woogie" that Commander Cody has made his trademark. The Blue Lights>Should Have Been Me combo worked well. I should mention for the fashion mongers, that George changed t-shirts for this set. He wore a bright red shirt that said REMOVE BEFORE FLIGHT. I always have liked Lookin' at the World Thru a Windshield. The 2nd set closer was Hot Rod Lincoln, as everyone in the crowd was primed for it. Mark seemed to be on his game tonight, even more than usual. As a matter of fact, he never had a beer, hmmmm. Between the next set break, we talked about one of our favorite topics, Southern Rock. He informed me that he got to play with Dru Lombar last year, the night before his untimely death. Untimely death, all death seems to fit that category. We talked about the guitar legend Toy Caldwell as well.
>
> On to set 3 with motre Boogie Woogie as they got going with Rock That Boogie. After Midnight on the Strand, Pat, Robin, and myself shouted out the obligatory "Free Bird". No licks from Mark. I enjoyed the Good Morning Judge. To waste no time, George announces 2 seconds after the last note of Beat Me Daddy, here is the encore. And it was time for Lost in the Ozone. After I packed up my taping gear, I went back to bid George, Steve, Rick, and Mark goodbye. I also gave George shit for not playing Seeds and Stems!

Zak Brown Atlanta 2/16/2006

Zak Brown Atlanta 2/16/2006
>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> David gave me a shout as Zak Brown was on his cooking show at Turner. He was on the list plus one, so, time to head to Smith's and hang with Dillon. We got there around 10:15 and I was amazed at all the cars across the street! I had no idea where all these people could be. As we hit the back of Smith's, I saw Jimbo. The people were at Smith's! We had to fight thru the crowd to get upstairs, where it was wall to wall. It was as crowded as I can remember. Tim Brantley was just getting on stage. I plugged in and got the last 4 songs of the 30 minute set. During the 39 minute changeover, we hung in the back getting ready for Zak.
>
> We took our customary spot as Dillon's bodyguards, best view of the front row! It was my first time seeing Zak's band. See Jeff Frank, there are more than the 3-4 bands you go to see! Zak plays an acoustic guitar mostly. Along with a bass, drums, there is also a fiddle. The crowd was definately here to see this band! I am not sure of the titles, perhaps someone can lend a hand with any corrections. Every Little Bit came after Toes in the Water. His big hit, Chicken Fried Rice, was in the #6 spot. The bass player was credited with writing many of the songs. Things got a bit interesting as Dennis, from the band J Hollow, joined the boys on saxaphone. It was a bit Dave Matthewsesque with the Sax and Fiddle trading licks.
>
> They did a few nice covers including Devil Went Down to Georgia, Into the Mystic, and the Bill Withers' staple, Use Me. Haven't seen that one since the killer 2nd set at Portsmouth on 8/5/2005, (Thin Air (Smells Like Mississippi) > Bear's Gone Fishin', Climb To Safety, Good People, Sleepy Monkey > Maggot Brain > Chilly Water > Drums > Use Me, Chilly Water, This Part Of Town, Henry Parsons Died). They also covered Ray Montagne's Jolene. By the time the set had ended, they played a straight set of 2 hours and 15 minutes. The crowd did not really thin out till near the end. Great seeing Pete in the house as always. David introduced me to Zak after the show. Also got to meet his Dad. And of course it was great to meet the one and only T-Bird!

Phil and Friends NYC 2/12/2006

Phil and Friends NYC 2/12/2006
>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> The last night of the 3 night run in the greatest city in the world! After last night, I had no clue as to who might show up. We awoke from our sleep to find a winter wonderland in Ridgewood, New Jersey! We got about 20" overnight. We watched Syracuse finally look decent, albeit it was St. Johns, and they can make anyone look like a good team! Mark and I headed towards the Big Apple around 5:00. We decided upon a pre-show meal of BBQ, so we hit the Dinosaur BBQ up by Harlem. I will say this, NYC did an excellent job of clearing the roads! Where else do you see garbage trucks with snow plows on the front! The Fried Green Tomatoes got us started. I ordered the combo with pulled pork and sliced brisket. The pork was excellent. The brisket was very good but it won't compare to the Fox Brothers, Rudy's, Salt Lick, or Goode's (Houston). Mark opted for the Big House Special, Chicken and Ribs. I sampled some of that and it was tasty. The salt potatoes and cole slaw were also right on. We were sufficiently stuffed. We headed over to the Beacon and hooked up with Lynchee. He hadn't planned on staying, but snow is snow, and a lot of it.
>
> I again met Jim and we finagled seats in Row H. It took a bit of trading. Richard, Cheryl, and Curtis were in the row in front of us. Wayno was also in H. Good seeing Tommy Chin all 3 nights as well as a slew of others. It certainly was the sweet spot. As we set up, on stage Trey Anastasio was plugging in. Another special guest to join Phil. He and Barry jammed for about 10 minutes, with Jeff Sipe joining in. That would be the only time we would see Barry, as he never came out once.
>
> They opened up with a surprise, Help>Slip>Frank. They played this Friday night and I was surprised to hear it again. All three parts of this were longer and a bit tighter tonight. We watched Trey take down the music stand prior to the opener. He should have kept it to cheat by, as he screwed up the 1st verse. This was the only repeat of the 3 night run. The next two were firsts for me, Cripple Creek and TLEO. TLEO slid into what I thought was Cold Rain and Snow. After about 3 minutes and 33 seconds, it was aborted before any vocals were sung. Instead they moved on to Loose Lucy. I was hoping they would finish the CR&S. Don't know if they just botched it or what. It was not on the setlist for them to play. The set ended with 2 Dylan tunes, my first Buckets. Larry had the mando on this. Mark and I both agreed that Barry should have been out on the steel. Rob was rippin' the B-3 for Watchtower.
>
> After a 40 minute break, the shortest of the 3 nights, we were treated to a St. Stephen. A good version at that. Joan sang one called What Sin. After a sweet jam, we hit the vintage catalog, Cryptical>Dark Star>Eyes! Trey took care of the vocals on Eyes. This led to GDTRFB. A funny moment as Trey blew his amp. They tried 2 different guitars before the techies figured it was the amp. Without a guitar, he sang and danced with Joan for the last 3 minutes of the song. They did get things working in time for Gimme Shelter though. The jamming on this set was tight. Rob had to do the donor rap and band introductions as Phil lost his voice. I know the jokes are flowing, "why didn't he lose his voice at the first show"? Trey led us through a Wolfman's Brother. Danny Clinch sat in on harp, as they closed with a Midnight Hour.
>
> As much as I am a huge fan of Warren Haynes, I believe I liked tonight the best. The best thing that could have happened at a 3 night run, happened. Each night got progressively better! I would have liked to see the following tunes, Cosmic Charlie, The Eleven, Alligator, Pride of Cucamonga, Mountains of the Moon, and Doin' That Rag, but it was only 3 nights and you get what they give ya! All in all, a great 3 night run. I must admit, I was on the fence about making the trip as I did not decide until Wednesday late night. I came without a lot of expectations, yet I left with great times with friends, great food, and lots of long lasting musical memories. Mark summed it up best when he told me late Sunday night: If you didn't come to these shows, you would be kicking yourself in the ass! He ain't kidding!

Phil and Friends NYC 2/11/2006

Phil and Friends NYC 2/11/2006
>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> Night two of the weekend found us in good spirits! A Noreaster was called for in the forecast to begin dumping at 5:00 in the afternoon. Every tv and radio station were talking up the storm, getting people into a frenzy. Well, as Mark, Laurie, and I drove in from Jersey at 5:00, it began. It was coming down hard as we headed in to Mama Goo's for dinner. We ordered some apps and dinner. I was getting edgy as they were busy and I wanted to get to the Beacon. The soup dumplings, and the green onion pancakes arrived, so my mind came back to the dinner table. We agreed that the soup dumplings were very good, butr not as big as the ones we get from Shang Hai. The Prawns with Garlic raged! The Sizzling Beef and the Noodle Dish were also great. Off to the theatre.
>
> Once inside, I hooked up with Jim and Wayne. My moto, if it ain't broke, don't fix it! Within minutes, we found ourselves in row H, DFC. Cheryl and Richard were right behind us. And yes, Curtis was right there in the mix. I did notice lots of Red Sox fans at the show, right Lynchee? We did notice an extra mic stand and guitar amp on stage. I was projecting some wishful thinking on who it might be. The set started with a China-Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider. The transition to Rider was a bit off, and the song was played a bit slow in my opinion. Next was another old favorite, Scarlet Begonias which stretched out with a jam to about 17 minutes. Barry started playing the lead and in mid-stream, Larry took over, a very cool moment. No Fire on the Mtn, but the Wheel instead. The closing pair was great, Cumberland and Uncle John's. Barry was stokin' the pedal steel and the mandolin played by Larry for Uncle John's was sweet.
>
> As we readied for the 2nd set, we were still wondering who our guest could be. After a 49 minute break, we found out it was Warren. He would play the entire 2nd set in place of Barry. I thought I heard the Wah-Wah for a Shakedown. Yes! This led into a phat Viola Lee Blues sandwich, filled with Hard to Handle and Bertha. The beginning of Bertha was a tad rough. Phil busted out Big Brown for my first Bartering Lines>Jam>Caution. Well, we ended up getting the Fire on the Mtn later than expected and a Not Fade Away. Nothing like an hour and 47 minute set! I believe the encore was my favorite trio of songs for the evening, Strawberry Fields>Comes a Time>Golden Road. Barry joined in on the pedal steel for this. I spoke with David who was back home at Yonder Mountain. They opened with No Expectations, and those were my thoughts on the first 2 shows going in. I was pleasantly surprised! What is up for Sunday night?

As we exited the Beacon, it clearly snowed close to 6 inches during the show. As we headed down Riverside, we got rear-ended by a car that could not stop. We moved out of the intersection and when we pulled over, the @)*@^%!%!!! jumped on the West Side Highway and took off. It snowed all night resulting in the largest 24 hour accumulation in Manhattan. I just love being a part of history!

Phil and Friends NYC 2/10/2006

>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> It has been a while since my last trip to NYC! What better excuse than a Phil or ABB run at the Beacon! Staying with my best friends Mark and Laurie in New Jersey. As I always mention, some people eat to live, but I live to eat(and see music)! After some excellent Thai for lunch, followed by a stop in 2 pizzarias for dessert, I had to perform work for a while at the house. We headed for the Big Apple around 5:30. An open spot on Amsterdam in front of Planet Sushi, hmmm, was that a sign or what! After we ate $100.00 of fish, it was time to head over to the Beacon a couple of blocks away and meet David, our other good buddy we grew up with. As I entered, I run smack into Joey! Nice surprise as I have known him from all my trips to the Beacon for the ABB March Madness shows over the years. I then get to see Cheryl and Richard for the 1st time in almost 2 years.
>
> I met Jim down in row H DFC. Looked like the spot! Mark set up next to us. Ended up that as a collective group, only 2 of us had a ticket in the row, and not together. We were ready to roll when Phil and company took the stage. Other than Playin', the first 5 songs didn't knock me out. The set caught me at the final 2 songs of Love the One You're With and Lovelight. I am not a Ryan Adams fan and was glad to see Joan over him for the show. But why do Ryan songs?? Go figure. The set clocked in at just over 1:21.With some editing, it will fit a disc.
>
> After a lengthy set break of 49 minutes, back to business. Jaon likes doing the Pig Pen material and they opened with a Midnight Hour. I thought I heard rumblings and notes of either a Dark Star or Bird Song, but got a Magnolia Mountain. Then it was onto a great combo of Bird Song>Unbroken Chain. Joan excused herself for the Chain. Phil was a bit overanxious and opened up with the 2nd verse until he caught himself. That combo was perhaps the best 33 minute stretch to that point of the show. I actually liked the Rescue Blues as it was my first listen. After Good Lovin', I actually called the Help>Slip>Frank. That is why we love seeing Phil's different conglomerations of musicians perform. After a few announcements, we got a fun Casey Jones. When the exit doors popped open, it was the first air less than 95 degrees I felt all night. After I got rolling each set, I hung with Mark and David, 2 of my oldest friends that I grew up with in New York. Nice seeing and hanging with Richard and Cheryl, John, Wayne, Jeff, and running into Phil and Lizzy from Columbus!
>
> Time for a late night feeding at Hop Kee in China Town. Spare Ribs, Hot Sour Soup, Muscles in Spicy Bean Sauce, Foo Young, Spicy Beef Chow Fun, Sauteed Water Cress. Enough food for at least 5, we left without a doggy bag. Dropped David at the Trump Rink in Central Park to make ice, and Mark and I headed back to Jersey. BTW, we have 3 extra floors for Sunday. Give me a shout if you need em.

Tea Leaf Green Cleveland 2/3/2006

>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> As if three nights in a row in Ann Arbor wasn't enough......I made plans with Focker to pick him up at the Cleveland Airport around 6:00. I left work a bit early 4:00 and drove through a cold rain in Toledo over to Cleveland. I hadn't spent any quality time with Focker in over a year and a half! Now, I was about to spend 10 hours with the man! We headed up to the Holiday Inn downtown. After hangin' out and burning a few cds, we took Steve with us and headed over to the Grog Shop in Cleveland Heights. Yes, I found a very nice section in Cleveland! This was my first visit to the Grog Shop in all my years seeing shows in Cleveland. I was hoping to make it a memorable occassion. With Tea Leaf Green, AND Focker, it had the makings of just that.
>
> We arrived as the doors were about to open at 10:15. Always good to see familiar faces when you are on the road. Some of the usual taping suspects were in the house, Steve, Andy, Franklin, and Focker. It was a nice treat running into Chopper as well! The place filled up in a hurry. We set up in the sweet spot, FOB/DFC/KFC/ZFC, about 12' from the front of the stage. We hung out with Josh, Steve, and Todd as the Mod Quad took the stage. As I always say, record for the moment and I ran for the opener. They played a jammin' set of original tunes that lasted about 37 minutes. I met their drummer, Big Stu at the beginning of the TLG set. He helped me with the setlist and I will hook him up with the recording. They are a local band in the Cleveland area.
>
> The boys took the stage at about 11:48, only a 27 minute stage switch including a soundcheck on the fly. Great job Steve and Todd! I enjoyed several parts of the 1 hour and 47 minute set. The Ride Together Sandwich>No Friends in Arizona, The Incandescent Devil, still my favorite In The Garden Part III, and Dragon Fly were my highlights. Steve had the sound where it needed to be. The atmosphere was "relaxed", so partying was abundant. They came up for a double encore of I've been Seeking and One Reason. If I had to pick the one song that was not quite there, it was the first encore. After that long set, I was looking for a different tempo. The crowd would not let TLG quit after the encore, so, why not bust out a 12 minute Sex in the 70's! Right on.
>
>
> As much as I enjoyed the Ann Arbor show on Tuesday, this show ripped! From the opener till the set closer, they grabbed the crowd and held them hostage. There was no let up during the set! Franklin asked me if I enjoyed the set. I told him "if I didn't enjoy that set, get a couple of shovels and bury me now"! After the show, we hung with the boys and paid our respects. For Focker, the prospect of watching High School Hoops in Chicago tomorrow with Jeff Frank lead to, we need to get ripped tonight, and worry about Saturday with Jeff tomorrow! I left Focker at a house party close to 4:00 a.m. I headed downtown to pick up my laptop and then drive back to Toledo as I had to work Saturday. In at around 7:45 a.m. for a 2 1/2 hour nap(Couldn't have been asleep for more than three hours, time to go to work again!), and on to work. Five shows in 6 nights, going to work the next day each time, I'm ready for some R & R!

David Bromberg Quartet Ann Arbor 2/2/2006

> Hey Y'All,
>
> The time was ripe for my third night in a row in Ann Arbor. I was psyched for this one, as my taper friend Jeff bought me a ticket in row c over 2 months ago. I don't get to see Bromberg that often anymore. He and his wife Ruth catch almost every show at the Ark. I love this venue as the sound is impeccable, and the row c seat is dead center! It was great to see Jim and Lori, Kevin, and Steve! The lady from the Ark made a couple of announcements including no flash photography or audio taping. Hmmmmm. We were treated to a short set by Rod and Anna Capps, who recently played the Ann Arbor Folk Festival. They played a 17 minute set of 4 songs.
>
> After a 23 minute intermission, out came the quartet. They are a solid bunch. Butch Amiot and Jeff Wiser have been with David for 20 years and it showed. They opened with one of my favorites, Six Days on the Road>Fiddle Tunes. As they customarily do, the boys had 3 fiddles in sync for the end of the song. At the end of Yankees Revenge, they had 3 mandolins going full force. It was mostly folk/bluegrass music.A couple of oldies like Demon in Disguise, Dark Hollow, and Brokedown Wagon were very well received. David played one solo, I was hoping for a Churchbell Blues>Statesboro, but not this time. They closed out the 2nd encore with a Roll on John, totally unplugged. The quartet got right up to the front of the stage.
>
> I thoroughly enjoyed the show and so did the sold out audience. A quick stop at the N.Y. Pizza Depot, and back to Ohio. If you get a chance, check them out! Here is how it went down(The setlist is lacking times a a couple of titles as I was pre-occupied during the performance):

moe Ann Arbor 2/1/2006

>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> I guess I did not get enough of moe on Sunday night, so, for the 2nd night in a row, I'm gonna find my way up North, and find out what I'm worth.... When I arrived under the flashing Marquis, there was Rob Robar with a ticket for me. Great to finally see him at a show! Lots of the usual suspects at the show as well. I hooked up with Gary and we went inside the theatre. . At first, a geeked up security crewmember told us right off, here is the only taping section. It was the back right handicap area. I said whatever and off he went(hopefully to ingest some Rytalin). As the crowd started to filter in, we set up in the center section of row H. All the other tapers set up in the middle as well. Later, we were told head height. Gary is about 6'5', so we had a nice head start.
>
> I love the Michigan Theatre and have seen many great shows over my years of travel in the midwest. The sound is always good and the sightlines are very good. Most ushers are volunteers which allows for a "very good time". The only problem with the MT, is there is an 11:00 curfew. If the band starts late, you lose music that won't be made up. The boys took the stage and got rolling at about 10:50. A Stranger than Fiction opener. I enjoyed the Lost Along the Way, as Al took us out there rocking the house. A CIA>Bear Song closed the well played set that ran almost 70 minutes.

> I was heading to relieve myself at the break when I heard my name called. I looked over, and there was Tom and Christina! What a great surprise! It was the first time I have seen Tom since his surgery. He looked very good and is feeling like a new man. It is ironic, but his last show was the Kimock show we met at in Ferndale, and here we meet at his first show since! Welcome back to the Game Tom. It was great to hang with Jose (man of 1000 photos), Damian(for the third night in a row), Rob, Jeff, Brian, Gary, Tony, Matt, Betsy(who I met at last year's moe show here), and all. Another surprise was seeing Brando! He is back with a new band. I did not see if Lloyd Carr was in the house! Maybe he should take more chances on the grid iron, as moe does on the stage!
>
> The second set opened with the old familiar notes of Brent Black. This one stretched out nicely and up next was Time Ed. They only played the end part, seemed strange at the time. A surprise for me was the Paranoid Android, I believe it was my first. Does this not get in the rotation often or do I just miss it when it is played? Then some classic moe with a Seat of My Pants>Rec. Chem that swallowed up over 40 minutes! I did catch the "Broadway" riffs during Seat of My Pants. Al miandered off the stage and into the crowd where he handed his guitar to a face in the crowd. The dude ripped a few leads. His name was I believe, Justin Rundy? Was he a plant, who knows? For the encore we got back to Time Ed, the beginning and middle, then into a percussion jam where Rob layed down as he was playin' his bass. All adjusted his mic down to the ground level where the jam lead back into Brent Black. A very nice finish as they completed the cycle started from the opening of the 2nd set.

Tea Leaf Green Ann Arbor 1/31/2006

>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> Well, after a night off from live music, it was time for another show. It didn't take much, but I did talk Tim into going. A couple of Panera sandwiches packed, and up to Ann Arbor for the long 1 hour drive. The Blind Pig can be a smoky, overcrowded venue. Doors did not open until almost 10:00. I met JP in front of the board and grabbed his analog so I could run 24 bit. Jose and Damian, refugees from moe tour, had a night off so they were in the house. Good seeing Kevin from Ann Arbor in the house. With no warmup band, we were treated to 2 sets of TLG! We got over an hour 1st set opening with Harvest Time. I really dug the Incandescent Devil. Since seeing Warren join them on that song in Cincy, it hits home every time! The end of the set was my bonus. I got my favorite In the Garden III, plus it segued very nicely into Gasaholic. Tim and I visited with the boys to get ready for set II.
>
> Lots of good songs in the 2nd set, including Precious Stone, Sex in the 70's, and a Dragon Fly closer. Josh even remembered to wish Tim a Happy Birthday after midnight! Nice Earth and Sky>Tequila encore. One encore was not gonna cut it, so we got These Two Chairs. They played very well and Steve had the sound right on! The merchandise location afforded Todd the ability to watch the show. It was a good crowd for a Tuesday night. I am glad they are attracting some numbers. Do yourself a favor and get out and check these guys out. More than worth the $10.00 ticket!
