Widespread Panic Chattanooga 3/29/2005> >

Hey Y' All,>

Show number 4 of the boys return is in the books. I arrived with David about 6:50, hit Shakedown Street for 10 minutes, and proceeded inside. We were in the left section 15 rows from the stage. In 2 minutes, we upgraded to DFC over with DP and Martin. Ryan also showed up. The mic stand was loaded for bear with Shoeps, AKG's, and a bunch of Neumann's. We stayed in those seats all night. Why do people with such great seats, not show up? No complaints. They hit the stage a coule of minutes shy of 8:00 with a nice Little Kin. The song selection was all over the map. To sum up the evening in my opinion, the playing was very good, the sound was better than the Fox on any given previous night, but the setlist was nowhere for me other than a few fav's. > > The highlight of set 1 was the Blight>I'm Not Alone. Xmas Katy went down to the wire before we almost got Dirty Business. The second set held lots of promise with the Tom Waits classic, Goin' out West. That went south as we got to hear Bayou Lena(pure cheese any way you slice it). I heard the tuning and called Casa to my taping mates. I thoroughly enjoyed this tune. And yes, George played it nicely. Whenever I hear this tune, I can't help but think of the Greek when Carlos riped it back in 2001. The new JB song was pretty good, Crazy or Don't Worry. If anyone knows the name, let me know. The ending had Dave dropping some major bombs. Double wammy as we got Don't Wanna Lose You. There should be a law about playing Bayou Lena and this tune in the same show. Chilly was next and was split by a mini drums, Nebulous, and Space. I thought I heard Time is Free before Nebulous. George played the last few minutes of Chilly furiously on 5 strings as he broke one. I was hearing No Sugar at times in the set. That turned out to be Sometimes.> > The encore wasvery strong IMO. The show was very short by any standard. The second set was only 1:04. Another 2 disc show. Personally, this is a show that if I couldn't go and was seein' them the next night, I would say I didn't miss much. Look out Cincy! Here is how it went down:> >

Widespread Panic 3/26/05 Fox ATL

Hey Y'All,
>
> Night 3 at the Fabulous Fox started with a pit stop over to Tracy's
for her party. Good friends, good beverages, and good ol' Fox Bros. BBQ.
Thanks Trace! It was great seeing even more old friends! Three days
just isn't enough time to catch up. I see quite a few people all over the
country in my travels, but some of you came out of the woodwork for
this run. It was nice seeing the steady progression the first 2 nights.
That proved to be the warming up for this show. It all culminated on
Saturday night with me leaving the Fox Theatre saying, THEY'RE BACK!!!!
This show had the shortest setbreak and longest 2nd set by far.
>
> I settled into row J with Charles and Myndie. It is always great
hangin' with C.Fox. The memory always lives on from the kick-ass recordings
we have heard! BC, Leslie, Ernest T., and David were right behind me.
Lara, Jessica, and the infamous Marc Brut were right in front of me.
Surrounded by good vibes for sure. The Good People opener sounded nice, as
it has a catchy chorus. It was nice seeing Proving so soon on the tour.
Iam not a fan of "Big Bust" as I call it. They didn't do the cheesy
chorus they usually include in this tune. Very solid set. The second set
was the heat! This night clearly belonge to Dave. He opened the set with
a killer Stop/Go. The intro to Barstools was all Dave as well. The
choice of songs settled nicely with me. I did get my Diner. I noticed Chuck
coming on stage immediately. He looked quite regal in his black velvet
sport coat. I have always been a big fan of his ever since I bought the
Brothers and Sisters ABB album in 1973. He made quite an impression on
me when I first saw him in 1973 with the Brothers in NYC with my future
wife and best friend Mark. (Somehow I can feel more "old man jokes"
coming my way as many of you were not even born at that time!) I have seen
him since with the Stones and Mule several times. He is quite a
gentleman, as I got to meet him 4 years ago with the Mule. Having him on stage
seemed to spark JoJo as well. He was a bit spotty the first 2 nights.
>
> I asked Brut if he heard the 8 Miles High riffs at the end of the
Bera's Gone Fishin' jam. This led into the new song, May Your Glass be
Filled. I first thought it might be a Mercy. It also reminde me of the
Garcia/Hunter tune, Believe it or Not. That Thang was played very slow and
deliberate. It definately rocked out. With no extended drum solo for
all 3 shows, this was the longest, about 5 1/2 minutes. Even Dave joined
in. The Dream song>City of Dreams was very mellow. I thought this was
possibly the slowest version of COD I ever saw. They could not close on
a double slow ballad. I thought Porch would close it out, but could
pick up on the random notes that led to All Time Low. No one left the Fox
feeling short-changed tonight! Here is how it went down:

> Again, it was great hangin' with the Brothers and Sisters that have
made this scene what it is. At the beginning of the first night, I
thought that the 15 months seemed twice as long. By the end of the first
set, it seemed as if I just saw the boys a couple of weeks ago. For all
of you non-believers in George, if you don't like what you see, move on.
It will never be the same. It is a bit different, but it is the goods.
You can tell he has been practicing. The layoff didn't hurt us, it just
made us hungrier. The new songs sounded good and show some potential.
The sound was the best the last night. Did anyone else notice, no
ballons to speak of. Dino did a great job on lights. I like the new
arrangement he designed during the band's hiatus. Sonny added some vocals on
Norht and Dave did the same on the last 2 songs of the encore. JB took the
liberty of playing some nice slide on Blackout. I need to hear from
Ginger to get her opinion, as this is her first show in some time. I guess
the Chilly and Porch is waiting for us in Chattanooga. And now that it
is 3/28/05, best birthday wishes to everyone's great friend, Steve
Bohannon!

Widespread Panic 3/25/05 Fox ATL

Hey Y'All,
>
> Another show in the books. Not quite as crazy with anticipation as the previous night after an almost 15 month absence in our life. The scene outside was not as frenzied prior to the show. Marcus again let us share his nice piece of real estate in row O, thanks Bro! Carrington and Chris met up with me inside and we set up shop. We knew sooner or later we would get our first instrumental tune, so why not sooner, as they kicked off the radio broadcast with a well received Disco. For some reason, the vocals were a bit low for the first couple of tunes, but Chris dialed it in after that. Strong stuff out of the gate, but I am not a big fan of ending a set with a 3 minute song, especially Give! The set was pretty much on the short side, only 54 minutes. I always did used to preach to folks after many a Dead show, it's not the quantity, but the quality. This one will fit on 2 discs.
>
> The second set opener combo rocked! Very smooth transition from Wrangler into Pigeons. We did get some radio friendly tunes, as can be expected. Again, there were no drums to speak of other than the little break in the middle of Surprise. I would imagine Todd and Sonny will get their shot on Saturday. Marcus and I were looking at all the P songs as the 2nd set progressed and were wondering if we might get a Proving, Porch, or Papa's thrown in. We heard JoJo lay down the pretty keys intro and realized we were getting our first This Part of Town since Mikey's last show. JB covered the vocals nicely.
>
> Again, there were not as many tapers as usual. The first night there were only 6 rigs in the balcony per our good friend taper John. Downstairs, maybe only about 10-12. It looked like Robert was in hog heaven running his 6 Schoeps mix at the board! Chris, my wife, rolled tape on the trusty old R-500 back home. It looked like a compressed signal as the levels did not variate too much. We checked it out when we got in.

We shall see what is in store for the Saturday night throwdown. We know we have the Porch being served up tomorrow. My question of the day, are there any slower elevators than those at the Georgian Terrace?

Widespread Panic 3/24/05 Fox ATL

Hey Y'All,
>
> What can I say, I just saw my first Panic show in almost 15 months! I must admit, I was surprised how well they performed. I was expecting a bit of rust, but that thought quickly dissappeared when I heard the opening notes of Holden. Sorry you missed it Jeff Frank. You chose to watch Illinois play an unranked overmatched basketball team instead of seeing our boys! George nailed it as he did so many times last night. Practice is a very nice thing! There was a huge amount of electricity in the air. Anticipation was making us wait! What has made the scene for me, the past few years, is getting to see so many friends! That means more than the music itself. It was like going to a family reunion! Great seeing Steve Bohannon, Brian, Leslie, Derrick, Hugh, Darryl, All the Foxes(Jonathin, Justin, and Charles), and the rest of the crew. Also good hangin' with my houseguests - Ernest T. Bass and Zee. They got BLOWN UP!!! There were fewer tapers than I expected. Carrington and I set up FOB, DFC, Kfc in row O. Thanks to Marcus for the use of the seats! He gets an A+! The tapes came out very good.
>
> Chris came from around the soundboard to say hey to me when we first got in and told me he was ready to get this thing going! He was pumped as well. Not everything was perfect, they had a couple of moments, such as JoJo fumbling the lyrics to Greta. JB and George were kinda laughing, but they saved it.
>
> When they first came out, JB said, "Welcome back everybody". When they started the 2nd set, he said, "I were a little bit nervous". I had to mention this as many people were inquisitve about any remarks said by JB. The 2nd set was pretty short, but well played. I titled the new song Second Skin. Anyone have the real name, perhaps "Life is a Dream"? The highlight of the first set was the jam out of Lilly and the smokin' Rock. Ain't Life Grand was an obvious set closer, I still get a shit eatin' grin when I hear "In my mind I was a child", it still fits me!
>
> The second set Old Neighborhood opener was very funky and dirty. The jam out of Wonderin' was another highlight as it stretched out the song to over 14 minutes. JoJo had the B-3 going. The Drivin' sandwich with the new one was interesting, I swear I heard Goin' Out West in there, or did I? Both JB and George played the slide during the song. Nice getting a 3 song encore, the Use Me was great as Dave was hittin' it hard. He was very animated all night long. The only drums was a mini version in the middle of Fish20.
>
> Great seeing Dino back to work on the lights. And they had a new array of lights that covered the back of the stage. They had a nice effect, or was it the vegetables? The lights were in verticle lines in 2 rows on the back of the stage. The top row had 4 sets of seven strips, and the bottom row had 9 sets in a pattern of 4-7-3-7-7-7-3-7-4 strips.
>
> They were solid as I mentioned. The setlist itself was relatively standard as they did not risk any chances. There did not seem to be an overabundance of tapers. I guess with the downloads, it isn't totally necessary. I still say it is always nice walkin' or stumblin' out of a show with a tape! Here is how it went down:

Dickey Betts 3/10/05 HOB Cleveland

Hey Y'all,

Sorry I have been out of touch with everyone but my life became a
living hell last Sunday, 2/27. I ran an audit on my General Manager at the
harness track in Cleveland. What I found was not good. I had to fire
him. Unfortunately, I am now running this account. we operate the
concessions and a 1000 seat clubhouse dining room. I work from 9:00 am until
1:00 am everyday until I can find a manager, have him interview with my
clients, and get him trained. I had a plane ticket to be home for the
moe shows, as the Smith's show was my birthday. It has been a huge grind
and life is not pleasant. Last night after work I got a much needed
break. My buddy Tim called me yesterday and said Smitty had a couple of
comp tickets for Dickey Betts at the House of Blues in Cleveland. I left
work and got to Smitty and Nikki's. He gave me a ticket and got my head
in order. I walked into the House of Blues at 8:35. I hit the "section"
and powered up my deck. I looked to my left and Mike grabbed my digi
cable and plugged into his V3. Two minutes later we were rolling as
Dickey hit the stage to the opening notes of High Falls! Timing is
everything. I stood up and looked at the tapers, the usual suspects, Jesse,
Mike, and Matt. It is a small world, imagine running into people I know at
a show! Suddenly, work was a distant memory! Although there is no Help
on the Way for work, I did get a Franklin's Tower>Blue Sky!

It was fun hangin' with Tim, Bradley, Smitty, Nikki, and the taping
crew! I enjoyed the first set better than the 2nd set. Seeing the
Elizabeth Reed in the set was awesome. I actually listened to an 8/71 version
on the way to the show. There were 3 songs in the middle of the 2nd that
dragged a bit. I have no idea why Dickey had the keyboardist sing No
One Left to Run With? And he screwed up the first verse. He has added a
female vocalist who was more of a cheerleader than anything. She did
sing the lead on Bring it to Me. The Jessica closer is always sweet to
here. Interesting seeing Dickey do Statesboro. Dangerous Dan probably
took about 40% of the leads. He and Dickey played some nice dual leads
reminiscent of the old Brothers days. Since I can't make the Beacon run
this year for the first time in years, this helped ease my loss. Here is
how it went down:
