Fabulous Thunderbirds Dayton 5/27/2005

Fabulous Thunderbirds Dayton 5/27/2005
>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> After 18 hours since my last show, I felt it was time for another. After a 3 hour nap due to getting in after 3:00 from DTB, I headed out of Toledo for Dayton, to begin getting organized for my trapshoot that starts in 3 1/2 weeks. It just so happens, the Fabulous Thunderbirds were in downtown Dayton for a free show at Riverscape Park. I figured, what the hell. I haven't seen these guys since they were on the bill with John Campbell and the Allman Brothers Band at the Memorial Aud in New Orleans for 1993 Jazzfest.
>
> When I arrived shortly after 5:00, It looked like a tornado hit the place. I asked what happened and I got a "where the hell were you twenty minutes ago"? I got there and the sun was shining and not a cloud in the sky. The T-Birds came on at about 8:25. The only member of the band I recognized was Kim Wilson. I ran from about 35 feet from the stage, DFC. As the set progressed, I must have attracted every drunk in the place. I even had a whistler that went non-stop for half the show! It never did rain again during the show. They played a mix of old standards and some new ones they just released. I will attempt the setlist, but there are some ?'s. They were pretty bluesy as they featured 2 guitarists with contrasting styles. The keyboards were also good. I only knew 1 person at the show out of about 5,000-6,000 people. Here is how it went down:

Peter Rowan/Tony Rice Quartet Ann Arbor, Michigan 5/22/2005

Hey Y'All,
>
> I almost went more than a week without a show, but saw this one in the works on Friday. I left the office and headed up to Ann Arbor around 5:30. I got there at about 6:40 and hit the line. BC called me from the line at the Tabernacle as he was going to see Nine Inch Nails. Where is the setlist? Did Sloan tape the show? It was all the way to the Subway shop by then. I got in at about 7:10 as I got my ticket in front. It was basically sold out. I headed for my usual spot in the 4 seat row directly in front of the sound board. Jeff and I were hoping to ask permission for the board but no sound person, so at 7:25, I grabbed the patch. The soundman came out after that and let us have it with the stipulation, "no trade". Claire Lynch Band opened up and played almost a one hour set. I haven't seen her in at least 4-5 years, since before she had her baby. She had some very capable musicians, Jim Herst, David Harvey, and Missy Raines on the stand up bass. They were very solid and a good choice to open the show. I saw many of the usual suspects, Jeff and Ruth, Kevin, David, Steve, Jim and his wife. Imet some new DTB fans, Amanda and Steve, as well as Matthew. Jeff and Ruth were in their customary seats in the third row. I don't think I ever was at a show where I didn't see those guys at the Ark! The sound was great as it always is. The Ark was actually built for sound. Hubie told me he saw the show in Chicago and loved it. I was hoping he could take Jeff Frank so he could broaden his musical horizons.
>
> Time for the main event. Peter and Tony took the stage. The Quartet was rounded out by Brynn Bright on stand up bass, and Sharon Gilcrest on mandolin. Brynn has been with Pete for some time and Sharon is relatively new. She was steady, as she did not take too many chances. It was a guitar driven performance by the maestro Mr. Rice and Peter. Peter did play the mando on one occasion. Tony is the consumate pro, a very serious guitar picker! I have seen Peter a ton of times, but he always entertains me. The downside was a relatively short set. With so many favorites and so little time, we had to accept what we were afforded. My highlights were the Panama Red, Walls of Time, Moonlight Midnight, and Hobo Song. With some songs reaching 9 minutes, they showed their jamband trump card. They dedicated Harvest Go To Seed to Vassar, just out of the hospital. They also dedicated 2 songs to Jimmy Martin, who recently departed. Does',t every bluegrass band cover his songs? Claire did one in her set. Peter wants me to make him a soundboard disc. I plan on sending a note asking that I distribute the show so I can get it out. I think he will be cool with it. I got to listen to most of it during my 1 hour ride back to Toledo. Here is how it went down:

Bruce Springsteen Cleveland 5-15-5005

Bruce Springsteen Cleveland 5-15-5005
>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> Well, I wish I was home yesterday so I could have been at the Fox Brothers for the BBQ. I am sure the people, food, drink, and music were all top shelf. I received text messages from Dr. Chork in Colorado on the progress of his BBQ, sounded great as well! Someone give me a report on the JJJ show at the Fox's when you get a chance. How was Brut? Seeing as I was in Cleveland working yesterday, I saw "The Boss", and I don't mean George Steinbrenner, was in town. I know Eric left Louisville to see Bruce in Denver, never did get his review. The show here sold out in 3 minutes back in March! I figured it would be worth a shot after work on Sunday, plus I hadn't seen a show in seven days and Nate might give me hell. Craig saw the show the night before and enjoyed it. I left work, got up to Cleveland State, and found a free spot at a meter 3 blocks away on the "hood" end of the area at 7:10. I walked over to the arena with my finger thrust in the air looking for a ducat. In 45 seconds, I was asked how much I wanted one for by some guy with an extra. I told him $40.00 and he wanted more. I told him thanks anyway. He called to me and said okay. The lines were getting long to get inside, so I rearranged my gear and had to cut the line.
>
> Getting in was no problem, no metal detectors or patdowns! Thanks for the good tip Terry! I got in at 7:25 for the 7:30 show. I went into the men's room, got wired and hit my seat, a great seat the 2nd section from stage right only 10 rows up, in front of the stage's corner speakers. Bruce came on shortly after 8:00. The crowd went nuts when he appeared. But a funny thing happened, the crowd was very quiet during the songs, very respectful and well behaved. The show was solo acoustic, so this worked out great! Of course he played all the new cd with a sprinkling of some older classics. My best two moments were Racing in the Street and Incident. He played acoustic guitar, acoustic 12 string guitar, Harmonica, Piano, Organ, and for my first time, the banjo for the first encore, I'm on fire. The show was a real treat. I was so impressed with the piano on the songs. I guess he wrote most of his music since he started and Professor Roy plays what he writes. The Promised Land was super slow and deliberate. The Reason to Believe had a voice reverberator that made him sound like an old Delta Bluesman, very nice touch.
>

Black Crowes Atlanta 5/8/2005

Black Crowes Atlanta 5/8/2005
>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> I did not know if I had any gas left in the old tank after the past weekend, as Panic tour is now over. I recharged the batteries, mine and the Eco-Charge, and headed down to the Tabby to meet Sam and Diana. The show was not sold out and I found a ducat out front for a paltry $10.00. The opener was 22-Twenties. They played a bluesy rock set, nothing to set the world on fire. The Crowes came out after 9:00 and they sounded better than I expected. The Tabby did not, as it was muddy as usual. I have never seen that many seats upstairs reserved for VIP. I found the ever-present Sloan at the front of the board as he tried to capture the sound as well as possible. What would the community do without him, as he catches oh so many shows! It seemed that there was far less smoke than usual, fine by me as my eyes had enough from the weekend.
>
> I have to admit, I have not seen these guys since they opened for the Dead in Tampa, 4/7/95. We were treated to several of their big hits. All in all, a very good show. Marc Ford can play the guitar. Chris sounded as strong as usual, man does he have pipes. I liked the addition of the 2 backup female singers, who were present on most of the tunes. You did not hear a great deal of keyboards in the mix unless there was a solo. The candle lights were a nice touch. Always fun hangin' with Sam, Di, Jessica, and Sloan. We got glimpses of the upper echelon (the Fox Bros and Brut), in the VIP section. That kick ass BBQ can open doors! Where in the world was Carrington and Chris Campbell?Anyways, here is how it went down:

Widespread Panic Asheville 5/7/2005

Widespread Panic Asheville 5/7/2005
>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> Sorry again for the delay, but it's hard to keep up between shows and work! I completed the "hat trick" for the weekend. Always look forward to Asheville. It means either a Warren Haynes X-Mas jam with Chris, or a Panic show on tap. Tonight, it was the later, and the temp was about 55 degrees warmer! I awoke at Patrick's after a 3 hour nap. I put the Louisville on my laptop as I was waiting for Teresa to pick me up around 10:00. The drive was no problem on such a beautiful day! Goig thru Kentucky and Tennessee on the way to "North" Carolina was pretty, some construction, but not too bad. Would they play North tonight?
>
> Happy Birthday Tracy F. and Stacey(after midnight)! I had been talking to Sam in Colorado about this show. Diana was coming in from Mill Valley, and she was game. I twisted his arm and with little effort, he was coming as I found those guys tickets. They opened with a Thousage>Parsons combo that worked very well. Lots of meat in this set beginning with the first tour Genesis. The huge Stop/Go sandwich containing Three Little Birds>Dirty Biz was great! There was no guesswork as the X-Mas Katie was last night! After returning to Stop/Go, they headed North, my favorite Jerry cover. Porch>Blackout could have lowered the curtain, but Randall joined the boys for Life During Wartime! Nice choice that ended what I thought was as good a set as I saw in this spring tour. A very long set clocking in at 1:20:40. It will fit on 1 disc if you cut some crowd before Porch Song. I made it fit.
>
> The second set just flat out Delivered! I might be tempted to say that Good People is right up there with Second Skin as my favorite new song. And opening with that into a pounding Chilly was a nice kick start for the set. The Chilly>FFF>Chilly sandwich was welcomed by all as water flew everywere, even got my DAP1 wet. The Pilgrims was sweet as George may have done his best version yet. I turned to Brut near the end to ask him if he heard the China-Cat tease, He confirmed it. The Ribs was loonnggg and very dirty. JB saved some of his best rapping for the end. After the Surprise>Mr. Soul, everyone figured the set had to be over. Very surprised to get not one, but 2 more songs! JB did butcher a verse as he meshed two different verses together(Every move he makes>out on Hollywood and Vine). I guess it gives it character. The longest 2nd set I saw this tour at over 1 hour and 45 minutes.
>
> The encore was a surprise 4 song selection. I just can't get into the Glass be Full, sounds like Old Joe on Prozac, but when JB strapped on the mandolin, I knew it would be End of the Show! I love that choice, a great Danny and Eric nugget! The We Gotta Get out of this Place was dedicated to the road crew who in my opinion did a fabulous job the entire tour. It was great seeing Chris, Dino, and Sam at all the stops along the way. Being "older", many people asked me about that one.
>
> The night yielded 3 Bloodkin songs, Jayne had to be a very happy camper. Randall sounded good with the boys and did not overstay his welcome. I was surprised to see 2 Guildeds on 2 consecutive Saturday's both with a guest on Saxaphone. No One Arm Steve or Bayou Lena, thank the stars!
>
>
> Good to hang with everyone in FOB land; Pat and Robin,Tracy F., Tracy W.(all 3 nights!), Pam, Frank S., Charles and Mindy, Mike, Jen, Jessica, Mark, Flynn & Heidi, Alegra, Stacy, Dano & Julie, Drew, Prosser(the man defies gravity!), Lara, Todd, DP, Pete, Sam, Steve, Teresa, Innis, Fred R., Josh, Eric Scott(well behaved for 3 shows in a row!), Boz, Haney, Jayne, Sam & Diana, Michelle D. on her way to New Hampshire, and the rest of you freaks. Chris and Darrin along with Pat and Craig from Austin, keeping peace in the section! Eric saw the Boss in Denver after the first 2 nights, instead of staying with us, where is the review? I think Goodwin likes to see me as it removes him from being the oldest at the shows! Again, it's the comraderie at the shows that make them so special. At every show, "Why don't we just take a look around us" and you will see what makes us smile!

Once they began to play, it was as if they never stopped. I like the format of the sets with repeats of several nuggets. I don't miss the long drum solos. The band is back and George has arrived! The break did them good. They have a bevy of new songs, most of which I enjoy. Hope to see you somewhere this summer. Work schedule has already knocked me out of the 3 night runs unfortunately.

Widespread Panic 5/6/05 Louisville

Hey Y'All,
>
> Where do I start after saying excuse the delay? Drove from St. Louis with Tracy Woodard and Eric Leavitt in the rental car with NY plates, made me feel at right at home! Nice day for a drive in this part of the midwest. Arrived at the Mohlman plantation around 4:20, good timing. I played the St. Louis disced I burned during the ride much to Jeff Frank's chagrin as he can't stand any Schoeps source (help me Hubie!). He was glued to his laptop when we arrived. We all caravanned down to the Palace.
>
> A great night at the Palace, a treasure of a theatre to see a show! We ran into the Austin taping crew as they had 4 seats in the middle FOB. Jeff, Ernie, and I set up directly behind them, and of course my son Nate who was fashionably late. We set up and began rolling tape. There were some opening call to the races due to the Derby the next day. The first set started of the gate hot with a Conrad. George is all over it now. I used my Garrity flashlight for the Doreatha as I spotlighted Nate and his "I was seen dancin' to Doreatha t-shirt"! Action Man had to be played for the Derby. I have gotten to like this more and more as it gets the crowd geeked as well as any song as of late. The rest was good, but never pushed me over the edge. No jams out of the first 5 songs. Seeing Mercy and Worry in the same set is always a great sign of things to come. If it ain't broke, don't screw with success. Why slip a Big Bust between these two songs? The set was long, clocking in at 1:17:01, my longest of the tour.
>
> The second set was as good as anyone could hope for! Legba>Wrangler stoked the crowd. I got my favorite, Diner and a nice 17 minute one to boot. It was the best JB rap at the end as well! Even though everyone got slowed down for the X-mas Katie, the end rocked. Of course everyone including myself wanted to hear the Dirty Biz, but what can you do. I wonder how many other people at these shows besides myself got to see the NRPS do this one in the 70's? And then, the Katie led into a MAGGOT>CONTENTMENT!!! Melting moment for sure. I like my chicken, and tonight was no exception. My last Maggot was the one at the Greek with Carlos, 10/2001. My first George Contentment. He handled the pair very nicely! Tim Markum came by for a visit and I guess the fact that he is finishing law school very shortly made the Lawyers, Guns, and Money an appropriate encore! Warren Zevon, RIP.
>
> Why is it that the six seats we squatted, were never claimed? I don't get it. With a four seat limit on tickets, I would have thought some of the ticket owners would show up. Karma?
>
> Fun hangin' with Craig, Thea, and Pat from Austin, Mr. Home Team - Mean Gene, Jeff, Jeff M., Todd, Brut, Jess and Jason Mohlman, Mike and Jen, Ernie, Nate, Will, John D., Tim S and Tim M., Will, Fred R., and countless others. Ernie was raging after he spent the last 48 days studying for his "test". Nice night to pick to party. It was a real treat seeing Gene there as he was doing the Derby the next day with both Jeffs.
>
> After the show, it was off to Ramsi's with my Louisville connection - Patrick and Eddie! What a feast. Then over to Patricks where I met his 100 pound dog, Houser! Again, another dog couldn't stay away from me. As soon as I laid down, he jumps on top of me on the couch and wouldn't leave me alone! I figured that maybe they will play a Dog Song on Saturday in Asheville! Here is how it went down:

Widespread Panic St. Louis 5/5/2005

Widespread Panic St. Louis 5/5/2005
>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> Sorry for the delay, but roadwork and play keeps you hopping. At about midnite last Wednesday, I pulled the trigger and booked a flight to St. Louis for the next day. The desire was there, but I had to work out logistics for work. I have never been to this Fox and decided that 05/05/05 only happens once in a lifetime, next similar date will be 06/06/06. I called Jerry in St. Louis as he offered a floor ticket and a spot in his home. How can you not go? He picked me up at the airport and got to his house. I met his awesome dog, Rosey, a blonde lab. The most mellow and well behaved dog you will ever want to meet. It was a weekend to meet cool dogs. He had ribs on the smoker since 7:30 a.m., Fat Tire on tap, and, well, what else do you need! While waiting for Rannan and Julie, we played a round of disc golf. Although he beat me, I did score 1 under par.
>
> After Rannan and Julie arrived, we chowed down. They finally pulled me away from the ribs and we headed to the Fox. I was very anxious for this show at a landmark of a venue. What a gorgeous place to see a show! I only wish they could light up the huge colored light fixture during the show for the extra effect. It would have meshed well with Dino's lighting sequences. I moved up a few rows and taped with John Callery. I met his wife Ashley for the first time. Music has been thin since they had the baby. I also got to see the St. Louis crew for the first time since the Dead at Riverport last summer, the show Jeff Frank passed out in the section and rolled down the hill and stayed there until after the end of the show. It was always a treat to see Steve and Mindy Brothers, Matt Klaus, Matt and Rebecca Kinder, John D., etc. Woodard and Leavitt were there as well as Mindy Lu and the Austin taping crew - Pat and Craig.
>
> The boys came on and laid down a potent Pigeons>Pleas that got us going. The C. Brown started with JB singing the first few lines accapella before the band kicked in with todd's drum beat. They were on even though I am not a huge fan of Sleeping Man, Weight, or especially Daisy Mae. I heard my first Time Zones, and I need to revisit that tune. It was a long set by today's standard, clocking in at 1:14:23.
>
> I enjoyed the 2nd set better. The crowd was whipped into a frenzy as they opened the 2nd set with Tall Boy>Tractor. The Second Skin was extremely eerie. Once you hear it, you will listen to it over and over. It came in the middle of the Drivin' sandwich. Kinder thought it was Ball of Confusion and I can see why as they start pretty much the same. My highlight was the Holden>Mr. Fantasy as it raged. Jojo played an Elizabeth Reed tease at the end of Holden that was very pronounced. George nailed the Fantasy! I also got my second Run for your Life. Very nicely done.
>
> After the show, we headed over to the Kinder homestead for a party. That is where I ran into my second Daisy Mae of ther night, Matt and Rebecca's Bull Mastiff. I sat on the love seat, and I got some love! I couldn't get Daisy Mae off of me! It was pretty funny. Back over to Jerry's for a 3 hour nap and ready to meet Woodard for the next day's activities. Before I left, Jerry treated me to some homeade waffles. The secret, vanilla. Here is how it went down:

Gov't Mule New Orleans 4/30/2005

Gov't Mule New Orleans 4/30/2005
>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> Time for round two at the Orpheum Theatre. Last night was a great show, what would be in store for us tonight? Frank was starting the night at the Super Jam with Trey, so entrusted me with his rig. The 722 is the shit! I enjoyed the Dirty Dozen Brass Band or as I call it, the 7/12ths Brass Band. They played about 1 hour and 5 minutes. They opened with a Fire on the Bayou. The best part of the set wer the last 5 songs, Big Chief, Marriage Proposal, Ball of Confusion>Guilded Splinters, and the closing number- I'll Fly Away.
>
> Warren and company hit the stage at the same exact time as last night, 10:47, with a mellow Banks. Soulshine was eliminated early as the 3rd song. Zee and I were groovin' as we heard our "Lola">Can't Quit you Baby. The How Many More Years sandwich with the Higher Ground was sweet. Time for some home cookin' as 4 members of the DDBB joined for a Jealous Kind>The Thrill is Gone! My first cover of this BB King gem.
>
> The second set featured some hard edge Mule! I just love the song Effigy and this version with the Folsom Prison jam in the middle was stellar! I am also a sucker for Devil Likes it Slow, and with Karl D. blowing sax, well........! He stepped off for Ain't No Sunshine and then back up for a very long Blindman. I had mixed emotions for the encore. I saw Dave standing in the wings, so of course I was holding out for Cortez. Dave comes up and stumbles around stage as they settle into an ultra mellow Watchtower. Dave had the lyrics on a piece of paper as he traded verses with Warren. Isn't this a song he does evey 3-4 nights with his own band? Why did he need lyrics...uh..he was shifaced?! It could have been a killer trae of an encore. I would have settled for straight out Mule instead of the way it went down. Oh well. Off to Harrah's. I dropped a bunch in a hurry, regrouped and fought back for almost 1 1/2 hours before I left with a plus$5.00! Time for another 3 hour nap before hitting the Fairgrounds.
>
> No boubt that I had a blast hangin' with the usual; suspects, Zee, Frank and Emily, Dewer, Matt, John, Michelle(my gracious landlord for the weekend!), Hampton, Murray, Rama, Dave, Ashley, Mike Falcon, Audix Phil, Eric Scott for the second day in a row!, Julian, Richie and the whole Colorado Freak Krewe(nice bachelor party).
