Gov't Mule New Orleans 4/29/2005

Gov't Mule New Orleans 4/29/2005
>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> Sorry for the delay but work and shows kinda got me twisted if you know what I mean. After seeing the Panic show that afternoon at the Fairgrounds, it was time for some dessert! I met Zee, Frank and Emily, Dewer, Matt, Rack, John, Michelle(my gracious landlord for the weekend!), Hampton, Murray, Rama, Annabel, Dave, Ashley, and about 1500 other Freaks at the Orpheum. It seems like a Jazzfest tradition of some sort. We camped out in the 8th row, same as last year. Umphrey's McGee was the opener and played for over an hour. They played a nice Rock and Roll Heaven and covered The Song Remains the Same very nicely. Warren came up on stage and joined them for their set closer, almost a 15 minute song.
>
> Mule hit the stage a bit after 10:45. They rocked out with a Mr. Man. After a long About to Rage, they played a great combo of She Said>TNK. Got to hear a Wine and Blood after the sweet Empty Pages. Brendan Bayliss joined for the set closer, Sco-Mule. I thoroughly enjoyed the set, but the 2nd set was looming in the near distant. I'll Be The One was a nice mellow opener but that changed as they slammed into Slackjaw.
>
> After a very short set break, Mukle hit the stage just after midnight. The next treat for the weekend was the guest appearance of David Hidalgo of Los Lobos. He added some nice bluesy chops to the two numbers he played with Warren. Him and Warren traded licks until they faded into a drum solo. Matt was joined by the 2 percussionists from Umphrey's McGee. At the end of the drum solo, enter stage right, Col. Claypool. He did a slamming bass solo to accompany Matt and led back into the end of Spoonful. Next, Jake Cinnenger, also from Umphrey's McGee joined the Mule for a nice version of Lively up Your Yourself, and trust me, everyone was lively by then! Our next surprise guest was Brian Stoltz from the Funky Meters. He sat in for both songs of the encore. Here is how it went down:

Widespread Panic New Orleans 4-29-2005

Widespread Panic New Orleans 4-29-2005
>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> Greetings from NOLA! An interesting day for sure, and very lonngggg. I got out to the fairgrounds by about 2:00. I received Michelle's call and met her and the Colorado crew 40 Feet to the Schools side of the SBD. Eric Scott really enjoyed himself and actually wasn't even obnoxious for a change. Is he turning over a new leaf? After about 25 Miller Lites, I thought we were doomed. Richie Rich, Dave, Julian, Kim and the crew had a great time. Always a pleasure to hang with such a fine gentleman as Frank Kossen, Booyeah! Zee and Murray hung with us until Zee wanted to leave early, hunger pains.
>
> After seeing a bunch of intimate, small setting shows, it took a few songs to get adjusted to the wind-swirled sound. We just knew the Fish20 was the opener. The first 5 or 6 songs didn't grab me, but once they hit Hank Parsons, we were rollin'. The Drivin' sandwich and the Low Spark sandwich, were very nice to experience. Kim is still waiting for the boys to go back into Drivin'! JB did mess up the second verse. I said to Richie Rich, that Low Spark seemed too short. His reply, they will go back to it, and yes they did. The Love Tractor was supposed to be the encore after they were to close with Bowl Legged. We still got our money's worth with a 2 1/2 set! The Better Than Ezra set was Worse than Ezra for Eric. Another Guilded, as they played it last weekend. It was a very sinister version. I am surprised by the number of big nugget repeats during the tour. Keeps everyone guessing and coming back for more.

Outformation/Porter-Batiste-Stoltz New Orleans 4-28-2005

Subject: Outformation/Porter-Batiste-Stoltz New Orleans 4-28-2005
>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> Let us welcome the newest member on the Z-Man Chronicles list, Cheryl, from Auburn! How is that Dr. Crawford? A very interesting day to say the least. I landed in Mobile and my car was right there in the front row. I stopped at DQ for a treat, and large sundaes were on sale for $.99. I then stopped in Biloxi to try and earn my ticket money. In 17 minutes, I raised $78.00 at the Imperial Palace and back on the road as I had a show or two, or three to do. I talked Chip into coming in a day early and he stayed with me over at Michelle's. He crossed Mississippi on I59 as I disected it on I10. We were within 5 miles when we approached Slidell. He followed me in and we stopped at the house to unload. We went by the Maple Leaf and Jaquemoe's in hopes of dinner. Yeah right, only 200 people waiting to eat. We went over to Southport to scope out the scene for the PBS show. I went inside and made friends with Jay, the soundman. I talked my way into a board patch. The only problem, they were coming on around 10:45 and Sam and Outformation were starting at 10:30.
>
> On the way out of Southport, I noticed a bunch of people with laminates and stickies, munching on 2 big boxes of crawfish, Jambalaya, and red b potatoes. As most of you know, some people eat to live, but I live to eat! Act like you know what you're doing....and join the party. We pounded crawfish for about 30 minutes. I grabbed a bowl of Jambalaya and off we went to the Maple Leaf. I got there in time to say hey to Sam and set up off the board. I ran the band's cd burner out of my DAP1. As soon as they started, I adjusted levels and left Chip to watch the deck. I got in Chip's car and drove to Southport Hall. I set up my d8 off the board and in 10 minutes, I was running tape! Back to the Maple Leaf to see the Outformation set. It lasted a bit over 80 minutes, 2 cds by a just a bit. Peanut Daniels sat in for a few songs and I will tell you, the new material sounds great. I love the "Take me Back to Tennessee. Way to go Sammy!
>
> I got us over to the PBS show in a few minutes where we met Michelle. These guys can throw down the funk! A nice Cissy Strut out of the opening jam. I enjoyed the Got My Name up in Lights, We're Bringin' the Noise, and We Want to get Funky Tonight. They played about a 2 hour set. So, 2 shows, 2 different bands, 2 soundboards, 2 different venues at the same time. Yes! It can be done, right Indy Chris?

Railroad Earth Atlanta 4/27/2005

Hey Y'All,
>
> I left the house at about 9:45 with mixed emotions as I fly otut tomorrow and have more work to do. I got there 5 minutes before RRE came on. Phillip and Tim were already set up at the foot of the stage. I set up and we rolled tape 5 minutes later. I have not seen these guys in over 8 months. I am very tired, but so glad I made it. Only saw a couple of familiar faces. RRe hit the stage at a bit after 10:30 with a very nce Long Way to Go(where was Jonathin?). They were very together for the entire set. A nice crowd for a Wednesday. Teh highlights for me were the Head, Livin' the Good Life, Seven Story Mountain, Peace on Earth, Dandelion Wine, and the double encore.
>
> I am not totally familiar with their songs but I will attempt the setlist. This is 1 more setlist than I got from Jeff Frank, and he sees these guys more than I! I was supposed to go with Chris C., but he was not feeling all that well. I will get him the show for sure. Cousin Eddie did not want to go with me, his loss.

Widespread Panic Columbus 4/26/2005

Widespread Panic Columbus 4/26/2005
>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> It sure is great to be back in my neck of the woods hangin' with the Home Team! I did have a great time hangin' with several friends up in the midwest for the short run the beginning of the month. After picking up Charles and Mindy at Hartsfield in Atlanta, we migrated down to Columbus. The rain sucked on the ride down. We made it to Columbus by 5:00 and pulled up to Cannon's Brew Pub and found a parking spot right in front. Bohannon arrived just as we got there. The stout there is might tasty. The food was also good. BC, Derrick, and Brut showed up, as well as Carrington with his new friends. We headed over to the venue at about 6:30 and ran into Kelly and Drew as soon as we stepped out of the car.
>
> We found our customary sweet spot on the floor and began to set up shop. Five minutes before the boys came on, we got popped and were asked to go to the back. We all scattered. Charles and I actually moved about 20 feet closer. Lights out and we were rollin' tape. Dyin' Man out of the gate is not a good choice for me. Dave rocked on Lilly, hell, he rocked on everything. We were talkin' about Let it Rock at the brew pub and got it. JB did some rap at the end of the song. The Travelin' Man had some taste of The Wheel in the jam near the end before heading into That Thang. Brut also heard a bit of a Barstool tease near the end of That Thang. I was surprised to hear Send Your Mind. Why Bayou Lena? Argh. The second set was a Neil sandwich opening with Tonight's the Night and closing with Mr. Soul. In between we hit a few bumps in the road. The jam out of Greta picked up a bit and then Dave took over. Stop/Go belongs to him! After the jam where they become a bit detached, they went back into the theme before settling into Papa's Home. One of my favorites for sure. George busted a string on this one. Jack kind of snuck up on us and was a nice surprise, but why Daisy Mae. It seemed I was the only one not going gaga over this one. There really should be a law about having Bayou Lena and Daisy Mae in the same show. As it turns out, Jojo sang 5 tunes, can't recall seeing that too often. You couldn't have asked for a better encore, Heaven>Postcard! JB was late arriving on stage and that prompted Dave into saying "JB was crosschecked by the Cottonmouth's Goaltender".
> I thought it was strange that JB did not sing until the 5th song of the second set. Throw in the last 2 songs of the 1st set and he went 6 songs in a row without singing the lead. What's up with that?
>
> The nice thing about last night was hangin' FOB with the crew. The small venues are great places for shows, but I saw lots of unfamiliar faces on "our" turf. Nice to have the family together last night! Good seeing Callery back into service as well. The Mobile connection, Haney and Flynn were in the house as well. I got to use my new Smith Barney setlist pad, thanks Madison!

Ekoostik Hookah 4/21/2005

> Hey Y'All,
>
> Been a while as work has had me out of commission. The last several shows have looked pretty hot, especially Raleigh last night. Thanks for your calls and reviews over the past two weeks! My plan Thursday night was to get out of work by 6:00 and get up to downtown Cleveland to stealth the Allison Krauss and Union Station show. I never got out until about 9:15. My buddy Tim reminded me that Hookah was playing at the Outpost in Kent, about 45 minutes from work. Sounds like a revised plan. I got there at about 10:10 and set up shop. I had a chance to say hey to Dave, Johnny, Ed, Bradley, and Carinn. They got to play on the bill at the Wanee Fest in Florida last weekend. The crowd was a bit thin, perhaps Kent State was already done for the semester. The boys hit the stage at about 10:47. Dan had a small problem at the board as it seemed that some of the inputs got switched for the opening band. He had everything under contol pretty quickly though. The Red Dog out of the gate is always very welcomed in my book. My favorites of the set were the Better Man, and the winding Dumpster to close the set.
>
> Good meeting taper Matt from Columbus! After visiting with some folks at setbreak, the boys opened with almost a 20 minute Alexander. After T Rose, a mandolin player by the name of Dave Mayfield joined for the rest of the set. I called the Little Maggie. Cliff did two in a row as he handled the Isis like a pro. Always a great song from Robert Zimmerman! I believe that was my first Dark Hollow. I finally got an Arctic Song after about 2 years, thanks Dave! The ride back took too long as I got in at 3:45, thanks Di for the conversation on the drive back. Couldn't have been asleep for more than three hours...and back to work for a 15 hour day. > The new Pope and his head Italian cardinal wanted to go out to dinner.
> The Italian cardinal said, "I know just the place, a little Italian restaurant called Luigi's." The Pope said, "Let's give it a try."
> After meeting Luigi at the restaurant, the Pope asked what the "house special" was and Luigi replied, "We have a special fish dish."
> The Pope asked, "What do you call it?"
> Luigi (embarrassed) replies, "We call it the "goddam fish dish."

> Startled, the Pope says, "Okay, I'll try the 'goddam fish dish'."
> The Italian cardinal said, "Okay, I'll try the 'goddam fish dish' also."
> They both thought it was absolutely wonderful.
>
> A few weeks later, the Pope elects a new cardinal from Texas, and they (the Pope, the Italian cardinal, and the newly appointed Texan cardinal) go to dinner at Luigi's.
>
> The Pope and the Italian cardinal order the "goddam fish dish." The stunned new cardinal from Texas wasn't quite sure what to do.
>
> He finally stood up and put his hands on their shoulders and said, "Whew, I knew I was gonna like you f**kers."

Widespread Panic Chicago 4/9/2005> >

Hey Y'All,> >

First off, congratulations to Adam and Heather! Hard to believe but next time I see you guys FOB , you will be married blockers! Happy birthday wishes to BC and Pamela! Hope you could hear the Bowlegged on my call last night! The day started with Hubie, Frank, Nate, and Kate, picking up Teresa and myself to go to the Cubbies game. We were ready to kick off a long day. I ran the Schoeps MK4V>V3(yes, they were run as 4v's this time!), while Hubie was over at third base doing the video. He did a great job, even followed JB down the tunnel after he sang. He got a rousing ovation from the Panic faithful. The game itself was very good, a Cubbies 4-0 shutout on a one hitter. I saw a lot of one hitters this weekend, too many! Why in the world did Dusty Baker yank Zambrono? He pitched very well, and had 2 hits. After the game, Hubie and I ran into Dave on the way to the train and said Hey. He had fun in the bleachers.> > > To sum up last night, WOW! They were hittin' on all cylinders. A very tight and looonng first set by today's standards. Always a good show when you get Little Kin and Junior in the same set. "Love your dog..hope he loves me too". I believe the opener to be a R.L. Burnside tune, anyone sure of this? The closer sums up the first set, Mercy>Bowlegged! And my third Bowlegged in one tour, I don't think I can ever remember that! Trace tells me this combo was done once, in like '93. Again may I reiterate, it was the bomb hangin' in our little community for the third night in a row! I was able to find 5 tickets for some of the faithful for tonight's show. Glad you got in, as you know who you are! Nice meeting Tammy from San Diego, welcome to the list!> > The second set was like a wish list for the most part. The Porch was outstanding. That is the best George version these old ears have heard, as I think he hit every note. He is going through a metamorphis stage. He tore our face off last night. A big, fat, Drivin' sandwich, with lots of ecutriments! Finally got the Arlene. Dave threw down some hefty bass lines before going back to Drivin'. The only spot I could say did not blow me away was the encore. My second May Your Glass be Full, and I guess it just doesn't do it to me. It is like a prozac version of Old Joe. I walked out very "Satisfied"! After the show, a visit will 15 tour friends over to Charle's room, a trip to the 24 hour Mexican restaurant for a fat burrito, watch a Panic DVD about fans made by a fan, crash at 4:00 a.m., up at 6:30 a.m., and a seven hour drive to Cleveland to work at 4:00 in the afternoon. Ouch! Here is how it went down:> >

Widespread Panic Chicago 4/8/2005

Widespread Panic Chicago 4/8/2005> >

Hey Y'All,> >
Another fun night at the Chicago Theatre. A very different atmosphere and mood walking in. As I mentioned yesterday, the security (bastards) at the venue cast a shadow on us the first evening. Their militant and unbending behavior was very evident as they would not let us bring backpacks into the show. Addding insult to injury, they even charged $2.00 when they made us check in our bags after the emptying process. I spoke to Buck Williams, Chris, and Sam after this ordeal. They were very understanding and must have spoken to the management. When we arrived for night II, everything was cool. The only one that had to check a bag was Nate, as Kate had her luggage coming in from the airport! What a difference a day makes, other than the Cubbies blowing a 3-2 lead in their home opener in the top of the ninth (sorry Trace and Hubie). With us freaks along with JB going to Saturday's game, that should all change.> > We stopped by the Hard Rock to visit Myndie and Charles before the show. Why isn't Chris and Carrington here for the shows? We headed over to the theatre just before doors. I was able to get a few extras to help out some folks. Tonight we set up in JJ, or 14th row. Wookie scored seatrs in the pit and pulled a tape from there. We had a mini-Schoeps tree duck taped to the third seat in. As I always mention, it is not just the music that makes these shows, it's the people you see and hang with! We had quite the "family affair" going. In the 3 rows around our tree, we had Charles, Myndie, Nate and Kate, Hubie, Frank, Mike and Jen, Jeff, Fred, Smiley, and several others for the whole show. We made a new friend as well, Michael Saba. He was there doing some photos for An Honest Tune. He did get a couple shots of our little community, so look out, we may be back to haunt you. Also during the day, WXRT treated us to an airing of JB and George playing acoustic at a place in town. They played Travelin' Light, Doreatha, and Blue Indian. The interchange with the DJ was priceless. JB mentioned he was going to do a Little Dittie, the National Anthem, at the Cubs game tomorrow. Yes, we taped it. Jeff will probably seed it today and you should get it, as it is entertaining. > > Down to brass tacks. The first set was as good as you would want to see. They smoked right out of the gate and never looked back! The Pleas>Parsons whipped us into a frenzy. Lots of nuggets that I never expected such as a Gradle, JKMB complete with a Night People rap, and a sweet Stop/Go. Wow! Lots of funk in the JKMB! They barely cracked the 1 hour barrier, but as I have said in the past, it's the quality, not the quantity.Nate came empty-handed, so many fans were expecting blown-up instruments. The pressure is on for him to find a novelty store in the windy city today to help satiate some of the folks!> > I heard some people bitchin' about the set selections of the second set. Now, 9 hours later as I look at it, maybe it seemed on the light side, but when I walked out of there, I was totally satisfied and still am. The playing was on fire! They have changed the sound of some of the songs. Nice changes. They opened up the set with the longest drum solo for me to date, a bit over 6 minutes that slid nicely into Rock. One of the climatic moments occured next as they launched into Rebirtha. The jam coming out of the song was HUGE! It also extended the song to over 16 minutes. JB was playin' some nice slide parts and George was all over everything he played. Some nut jumped up on stage only to be shown the door. The boys were all laughing as he got up there. The only weak link was possibly the Nobody's Loss. But Mr. Soul pulled that out. Hopefully Neil is doing well these days.

Hey Y'All,

It took some finagling, but I couldn't see missing these shows after actually getting my mail order filled! I ended up staying at work until 3:30 am(17 1/2 hour day) on Wednesday to finish inventory so I could take a 3 hour nap and drive 6 1/2 to Chicago yesterday. Got to town and landed at Jeff's Palace by 3:00. Went down to Govner's bar and ran into a bunch of Freaks before the show. Tim actually scored 3 tickets in the 3rd row outside the venue! Nice work! Getting into the venue was not the nicest experience to say the least! As we were getting ready to enter, a security guard warned us, no backpacks allowed! They were not kidding! Charles had to unload everything. He asked the one guard if my bag was small enough and he said okay. I took some of his stuff with mine. We got in and set up shop in the 16th row.> > The boys hit the stage pretty close to starting time, must be a curfew thing! JB and Dave were not on stage at the beginning so they opened with a 3 1/2 minute jam. The first set was well played. The new songs are now part of the regular rotation. I'm glad I finally got a Conrad. I do like the Good People. That and 2nd skin are very good tunes. I am not nuts about hearing Don't Wanna Lose you, but...it did lead to Conrad! I thought the Blight and Casa were awesome!> > Why do they have to open up with Give (it up)? It's not a good bathroom song as it is short enough that you may miss the next song. Again, the Ride Me High had a long intro, 4:40. Dave tore this song up! The Ribs and Whiskey smoked! Nice nasty slide licks. Papa's Home was right on! What can you say about the pairing of the encore except SWEET! After the show, a trip to Pete's room to party then off to Greek Town with Papa Joe and Jeff!> >

Widespread Panic 4/1/05 Detroit

HeY'All,
>
> Another one in the books. Sorry for the delay as I am a Travelin' Man. Great time for sure. I finally got to see my buddy Hubie in action! We got in as the doors opened. The security guard said NO BACKPACKS! Of course I had to argue with him and that pissed him off. I slid behind Tim and Tommy as they opened the doors. I went up to one of the Gestapo agents with the bag opened and pointed everything out to him. He never said a word. After Hubie and I, they were not letting back packs in. Only small bags. Lots of people had to go back to cars. We set up camp on the first rail off the pit. A security guard told me to go back to the section. I stayed, and he never came back. Very few tapers, the fewest evah! After the show started, I saw 1 stand in the section, Sam and a guy I know were on the one stand. We ran 1 stand with Hubie and Nate's Schoeps. Rannan ran his B&K's. One guy with a pair of stealth mics, probably Cor Sounds and that was it! The sound and the view were perfect from our spot. No hassles with security either.
>
> The show was very good, although we had mostly all repeats from the first 5 shows. Only 4 not yet covered. Nice to see the boys go over 1 hour for the first set again. The Lilly> Rock was a repeat but who could complain. The Wonderin' format with the jam has been awesome. This one was about 4 minutes shorter than the Fox. The Mercy featured a kick ass Other One jam highlighted by some Dave bombs! They had a tough time getting the Hatfield started, but this time JB rapped away at the end, more so than at the Fox. The May your Glass is on the slow side, almost slower than Old Joe.

> Hey Y'All,
>
> What an interesting day today! I got up early after a great Cincy Panic show last night. I worked in my room for about 5 hours and left Cincy. I planned to go to the casino in Lawrenceburg, Ind. on the way to Indy. In geto the casino garage and jump out of the Jeep. My plan, win tonight's ticket money and leave. As I get out of the Jeep, a cloud of white smoke engulfed me. It stunk. I thought it was going to catch on fire! I went inside and hit a $15.00 table. My $100.00 was down to $15.00 in 4 1/2 minutes. The dealers were switched and so was my luck. In 2 minutes, I was up to $135.00 and out the door.
>
> Now I had to deal with my vehicle! I called a couple of garages down the road. It was 4:40 and the Dodge dealership closed at 5:00. I begged them to look at my Jeep. I got there in 5 minutes. I told them that the brake was stuck, probably the caliper. It was just that and they had 1 left in the parts department. I was out of there in 35 minutes and $149.00 later! On the road to Indy to Ernie's house. I got there but could not talk him into going as he had to go to work at 4:00 am after the Cincy show. I did talk Rannan into going to the show. We arrived and found Taper Chris with the 483's. Drew came on before 11:00. Pure bluegrass, a nice break after 5 nights of Panic. It was nice seeing Greg play the stand up bass. The 16+ minute Doin' My Time smoked! Back to Rannan's for a nightcap and then to Ernie's for a nap. Here is how it went down:

> Let's welcome Brad to the list! Got in from Nooga at 1:30 am, worked in the office till 4:30, took a 2 hour nap and Chris dropped me off to catch my plane to Dayton. Stopped by to see my client in Dayton and then headed south an hour to Cincy. Pulled up in front of the Taft at 6:15 to an open meter 50 yards from the door. I asked the guy in front of me if meters were still on and he said some girl just left the spot and meters are done at 5:00. There was an omen! Rock Star parking! I lock the Jeep and immediately I run into Jess and Jason, Eddie, and Patrick and.......
>
> I met Ernie and we went in to our row H, center section seats. We set up shop between seats 7 and 8, DFC. I found the owners of the seats and they graciously slid down 2 to accomodate us. Nate and Pete finally made it at about 7:40. We clamped him on and the boys hit the stage at about 7:53. Day 5 figured to have some repeats as there are certain songs that have to be played every 3-4 shows. Pigeons got us started. Highlights of the 1st set was a Papa's! The Ride me High coming out of it could not get going so they slid in a mini drums to regroup. The new George song, I think Nikitina, was pretty good. Let me know the name if anyone knows. Daisy Mae is not my fav, so I figured it was a nice long 1st set. What I didn't know was that it was to be followed by a Bowlegged! By far the longest first set and the only one over 1 hour(1:15)
>
> The second set opened with the well received Pleas. The Travelin' Man did not have the prominent Vacation tease as it did last week and in the past. We got our 2nd Second Skin. After the Nobody's loss, I figured Porch. Wrong again as they played a great Space Wrangler. If I had to pick 10 seconds from anywhere in the show where the hairs on the back of my neck stood up, it was the end jam of Wrangler where George was full force. He played it with a purpose. We ended up with 9 repeats. The playing was hot, the sound great, and the "Friends so Near" also great. Nice hangin' with Ernie, Nate, Pete, D.P., and all the other freaks! Five shows and still no long drum solo. Here is how it went down:
