Pearl Jam Auburn Hills 5/22/2006

>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> With the thought of seeing three shows in three nights in Michigan, and a good ticket available, I decided to hit this show. I drove up to Ypsilanti and met Aaron. Another one of those people you trade emails with and finally get to meet. We then headed up I 23>I 59> I 75. We parked in the employee lot right next to the exit. Anyone that has been stuck in this $&%$#% lot, could appreciate our planning. We hooked up with Adam and Jason and another friend from Germany here to do 7 shows. Jason cooked us a burger as the Weber was smoking when we approached. It certainly caught my attention as I was starving. Very tasty. The Palace "Guard", was on the prowl and they stopped by and told us not to bring back packs, fanny packs, or purses in to the show. I asked the security guy, Bruce, about small recorders. They had not been allowed in other venues this tour. We took the approach that the band is cool with it and Adam even printed out the piece from their website. He read it and said he did not know. I saw his radio and asked if he could call the boss and inquire. He told the security desk about the band's post and we got the okay for "small" hand held, no external mics or wires. It was at that point that I talked myself into attempting to get the 722 in. Aaron was all about that as well. There was no way I could get the MK4's, bodies, and 15' active cables in as well. I think the only reason I was going to attempt crotching the 722 was because the Rabbi took care of business when I was born, and that made enough room in my "tighty whities". We opted to run the DPA 4061.
>
> We approached the gates and they were using hand held metal detectors. i picked a line with a female security person. She made me undo my shirt and my jacket. The detecor was right over my privates and she asked what I had. i told her it was my belt. As soon as i passed through, i yanked it out laughing as we climbed the stairs. It was funny.
>
> Adam hooked us with very good seats, 19th row. Eddie came out as we knew he would as we saw the stool for him to sit beforehand. He only played one song, Gone, and then introduced My Morning Jacket. I have not seen these guys in over a year. I enjoyed their 38 minute set. I enjoyed the first tune where the one guitarist played a very nice pedal steel. They closed with their 2 very popular songs, also their longest songs of the set. It was too bad that the place was only about 35% full. The sound was good and we did not have a bunch of yahoos and idiots surrounding us. But that would soon change!
>
> After a 40 minute stage changeover, Pearl Jam hit the stage. Now the place was pretty much full, especially the floor. We heard the opening notes of Long Road and the place went nuts. We had 2 grown men in front to the right who sang EVERY song. We had a couple behind us that talked more than listened to the show. I do like harmonies, but not by 14,000 people. It has been 19 months since my last PJ show, and I soon realized that these shows are huge sing-a-longs. The music was very good, the set selection featured some nice choices. The sound was good. I thought they hung the PA stacks too high towards the ceiling. I enjoyed a couple of their new songs such as Severed Hand, Worldwide Suicide, and Inside Job. I loved that double neck guitar on the latter with a 12 string and a 6 string. We got some of the nice oldies such as Corduroy (strange hearing it in the 2nd slot), Even Flow, Jeremy, and an awesome Rearview Mirror. That was about the longest song of the night clocking in at 10:20. After Animal, Eddie made reference to the Pistons winning their series in this building the night before. The set lasted about an hour and 25 minutes. The first encore was about 29 minutes, and the second encore was about 30 minutes. They tacked on a Yellow Ledbetter>Star Spangled Banner to close things out. Eddie polished off his second bottle of wine by then. They do give you your moneysworth. We had a glitch and lost 12 minutes at the end of the 1st encore and part of the 2nd encore. One note, they aborted Nothing Man after they had a train wreck 1:35 into the song. They did regroup and pulled it off. After the show, we hit the car and headed back to Ypsilanti, and then I headed south to Toledo. We listened to the show most of the ride. It seems there is a magnet in the 4061's that attracts clappers and yappers. Not a great tape mostly due to the crowd. We did have a very good time anyways.

Marshall Crenshaw Ann Arbor 5/21/2006

>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> Spent most of the day working in the office. Spoke to Brian about going up to Ann Arbor and meet him at the Marshall Crenshaw show. I had my plan in place to leave Toledo at 5:00 sharp, to allow my time for some evening eats at Whole Foods in Ann Arbor. I was hoping the store recovered and was in good shape for my appetite. I tried to talk Tim into going but he had plans. So, for the second night in a row, in Ann Arbor, I was solo. Hadn't seen Marshall in at least 20 years. With the thought of sending Nate his MK4's back Monday, I needed a swan song! Got to Whole Foods at about 6:00. The hot food bar had raised the bar to where it normally was, thank you. I grabbed some Chipolte Briskett and some veggies. I tried a new item, redskin potato salad with blue cheese crumbles, yum. Do they do this in the Ridgewood store Mark? I also got a small container of Bison Chili, aslo very good. Needed some extra heat, but tasty. Extra sharp New York cheddar on sale. Growing up in New York, I always thought we had the best NY State sharp cheddar. Wisconsin, where's that?
>
> In the Jeep and ate on the way to the Ark. I found a great spot around the corner on the street. I stashed the 722 and the MK4's in the small bag. I headed for the middle section and grabbed a spot in the 8th row, as the first 7 are reserved. If I was as presegious and important as Jeff, Ruth, and Brian, I would be in the 2nd row! I saw Jeff walk in with a mic stand and was surprised as MC is not taper friendly. I ran back to the car as I wanted to grab the small mic stand. I set up very low in the row. When the lights went out, the emcee made the "rules" announcement. No flash photography and no taping. I kinda felt I was okay with the 722 hard drive, as I was actually not "taping". The trio came on at about 7:45. They sounded pretty darn good after all these years. We all remembered the 2nd song Someday, Someway which is probably his most famous song. I enjoyed the Dime a Dozen Guy. They actually played a few new tunes, good to see he is still writing creatively. The new one Sunday Blues was good. After the Salvation, Marshall mentioned that the Pistons won that day against the Cavaliers. The Whenever You're on My Mind. My favorite of the night was the setender, the Richard Thompson song, Waiting for Valerie. For the encore, he brought his brother Robert up to play drums on Marianne. Amazing, but even at this show someone yelled Free Bird! The show was short and sweet. We were out of the show just after 9:00. Where was Kevin L? On the road back to Ohio.

The Ragbirds Ann Arbor 5/20/2006

>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> I had to work all day up at my account on Lake Erie. I spoke with Adam as he was headed to see Pearl Jam in Cleveland at the Gund. I saw some loose tickets scattered on Ticketbastard but was not sure if I could leave work early enough to make the trip. He called and spoke of the security after he asked about the taping policy. They said if you try to bring in recorders you have 2 choices, either take them back to your car, or let us throw them away. Pretty damn harsh. They also had walk-thru metal detectors making it tough. I did not push getting done at work and decided to stay at work. I headed down to the office and had second thoughts. I wanted to see a show tonight and that was all there was to it. I checked out the area on the computer and saw The Ragbirds were at the Espresso Royale Caffe in Ann Arbor from 9-11 for free. Hmmmm, a free show 1 hour away, with a band I just saw last Saturday and enjoyed.... You guessed it, in the Jeep at 7:15, just about enough time to stop at Whole Foods for some evening eats to go. Got there at 8:15 and the store was the slowest I have ever seen it. The hot food counter looked pretty depleted, never seen it like that either. I managed to get my share of Chipolte Brisket and Eggplant Parmesan. I ate in the Jeep as I headed to 2264 S. Main as the website listed. I got there to see the only emploee outside smoking with not a sole in sight. Was the show cancelled? She said there was never any entertainment. She called the other location downtown and they confirmed the show. I rushed down there and got inside just before 8:55. The place was pretty full and there was MY table DFC in front! I was set to go by 9:00. Erin came over and said hey to me. I was so surprised she remembered me as we only met last Saturday and talked maybe 2 minutes. I handed her the disc of last weeks performance. All the tables were filled, the stuffed chairs were all filled, and lots of folks were standing.
>
> How many times have we taped at the Variety in Atlanta, and every show we record at least 1 if not 10 beer bottles hitting the floor and rolling? Or how many times have we recorded breaks on the pool tables at the Magic Stick in Detroit? Well, tonight I had to contend with coffee grinders and blenders for frozen drinks. A couple of women were sitting at the table next to me with two pots of tea and CHINA cups. I could see what might happen and asked them to try and be cognizent of the fact I was recording. They were cool. They kicked off their set shortly after 9:00 with Brave New Beat, a song I heard last week. I enjoyed this tango very much. The next song Tipibaya featured Erin starting on mandolin and switching to violin halfway through. I actually got to see quite a few different songs as they had a 2 hour slot, made up of 2 sets. There were some traditional Irish tunes such as Jacky Tar. The Edie Brickell cover of What I am in the middle of the set was terrific. They closed with a built up, fast paced Tarantella. Time for a very short set break.
>
> I asked Erin to come over to the computer as I pulled up the Ragbirds review I wrote from last week on Tapers Section. She enjoyed reading my thoughts. In 16 minutes, they were back at it as they opened up with a Bassy Talla with a percussion solo in the middle. Tim and Randall work very well together, almost like a left hand and a right hand. Another traditional Irish tune, Red-Haired Boy just before the Reggae sound of Narcissick. As they did last week, they closed the show with Dununba. Halfway through Erin plays a violin lead while all four of the guys are on percussion. After the show, I told her to me, it is definitely a different song. She kind of agreed and told me it was called Swallow Tail Jig. The crowd stayed for both sets and were calling too hard for them not to play one more tune. The choice was the Paul Simon cover of Diamonds on the Souls of Our Shoes. Very nice touch. What was really nice was walking out of a show without feeling like I smoked 1/2 a pack of cigarettes and my eyes not burning, or smeeling like an ashtray. BTW, Tim on percussion looks just like our fellow Atlantan, Steve Simpson. I did many double takes.

Codetalkers Cleveland 5/17/2006

Codetalkers Cleveland 5/17/2006
>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> I saw this one on the docket a couple of weeks ago. Tim was under the weather so it was up to me to fly solo. I had a catered event and a 4:00 meeting in Findlay, Ohio. I left the campus at 5:30 for the 3 hour drive. Show was supposed to start at 8:30ish. Got there at 8:20. The damn Indians had a home game. By the way, they shut out the Royals 5-0. Interesting piece of trivia, Len Barker threw his perfect game just over 25 years ago this week, 5/15/81. Also, 5/15/70 was one of my favorite Dead shows of all time! Jerry played Pedal Steel for the New Riders set prior to the monster Dead sets! A must for all collections. Wilbert's is right outside right field. Parking was a bitch, and $15.00! I found a spot in the lot in front of Wilbert's and argued with the attendant about the $10.00 over usual price. I showed him my gear and told him I was not there to audio tape an Indians game that had a crowd of 15,000 people. We compromised. I walked in and was greeted by Mark at the door. He also was accomodating. The place was half filled as folks were watching the Cavs vs. Pistons game. Steve R. and Terry were NOT in attendance. I invited Patrick to meet me but I guess he got busy on a project at home. For some coincidnece, MY table was vacant in the middle of all the folks up front. I set up DFC about 18' from stage, yes! The big screen was pulled down, hiding the entire small stage. After I set up, I chewed the fat with Bobby. He was happy to have Home Team Atlanta in the house! We reminisced about Smith's Olde Bar and the family crew of Jimbo, Parrish, and Dillon. We went in back to prepare for the show with Tyler and Ted. Ted grew up in Warren, Ohio, and had some of his peeps in the house including his Dad.
>
> I have mentioned in a couple of earlier reviews that I love the food here. I ALWAYS end up with the Seared Tuna Salad and every time, I say, next time, I have to try something different. I went over to talk to Mike, the proud owner. He suggested the Bistro Salad. I asked if I can pay extra and get some seared tuna. Done deal! By know, I was ready for some music. The game still had 8 minutes left and we all know 8 minutes could be 25 minutes! The crowd was intense as the game wound down. With less than 5 seconds and Detroit with the ball, I went up and told Booby Lee, "If this damn game goes to overtime, I will pull down the screen so they can play". Tough defense won the game as the boys were tuning. Instantly after the horn had sounded and the place went bonkers, the screen went up and I got my opener request, When the World Comes Tumbling Down! My salad was delivered by now. Mike, it was excellent. Mixed Field Greens with toasted pine nuts, dried cranberries, Bleu Cheese crumbles, and a zesty French dressing, yum! Next up waas my other request, Welcome to Hawaii. Bobby asked what else I wanted to hear. I did not want this to be my personal show so I was wide open to anything they played. The Air Tran Woman was hilarious and spaced out at the end to go with the Outer Space that followed. Bobby gave us some nice sound effects. Ted cracked me up during the I'm on a Speedway as he held the monster upright bass sideways and was slammin' it! If y'all know Ted, his bass is almost twice as big as him! The Sword Crosser had Tyler treat us to a nice drum solo sandwiched in the middle. The over 2 hour set was very well received by the crowd. They were raucously cheering and we saw the boys get right back up for Body in the Lake>Air Tran Woman. Yes, back into it as they played it much earlier.
>
> Since we moved to Atlanta in 1987, I have loved seeing the Colonel. I must say, these guys can throw it down as a three piece! There's no holding em' back. Col. Bruce will continue to play some of the local gigs down south. Too much road is too much for him to endure. We will all welcome the chance to see him, but go out and support these guys. They have really come around in the last 5 years. They have a great deal of new material. I was hoping we might get Ike Stubblefield up here as it is close to his territory, Toledo. I have gotten to love seeing shows here as the set up lends to great recordings, and I get to chow down on great food! Jesse, my Cleveland taper buddy showed up 29 minutes into the show. He was watching the Cav's game. You shoulda watched it here! Tim from Sultans of Bing was also in the house grooving to the show. His band will be at Nelson Ledges this weekend as part of the Mayflowers and Musicfest. BTW, Bobby will be doing an interview on NPR soon. Check the website to find out when it will be aired. Scott did a nice job mixing sound, only one major feedback but he was all over it.

Smokestack Toledo 5/13/2006

>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> Another long day at work from 10:00 until about 9:30 up at my account on the lake in Michigan. I decided to head down to Mickey Finn's Pub to catch Smokestack. Got there about 10:10. I was surprised as they had an opener already on stage. The opener was the Ragbirds, out of Ypsilanti, Michigan. I set up in my usual spot expeditiously, and was recording as they started their second tune. I enjoyed their set as this was my first time seeing them. The Ragbirds use many traditional folk instruments including violin, acoustic guitar, mandolin, banjo, accordion, acoustic guitar, piano and harmonica. But this folky root is firmly embedded in the soil of rhythm, ancient and new, incorporating African poly-rhythms and Afro-Cuban tumbaos, over sometimes rock, hip-hop or reggae style drum-kit. Their sound makes you want to move to the beat. Erin plays a very nice violin and accordian. As described, they have a great deal of percussion in their music. The part of the set I saw lasted just short of one hour. I will check these guys out again as they play in the Southern Michigan area often.
>
> Pat, the house sound engineer, assisted with the breakdown and changeover of the stage. In 26 minutes, Smokestack was on and ready to roll. The opener was Already Know. This stretched out to 15 minutes and was every bit as good as the last one I saw in here. They played a very jazzy The Chicken. Jazz would be the theme for the 2nd set. They played a short Slayer Tease that segued into Bakersville. My favorite part of the set was the next two songs that closed it out. The guys invited Erin up with her violin. What ensued was a kick-ass version of The Way It Is. James had the keyboards cooking in this great Hornsby ballad. You would have thought that Erin has always played this song with the guys! She definately got things stirred up in the entire room. This segued very smoothly into the very energetic Why Did You Do Me Wrong. If this song doesn't get you dancing, you are either dead, or passed out.
>
> After some fresh air and a brief 16 minute break, it was back to work. Due to the time, we were only going to get an hour at best. They opened up with the calypso sounding Leg and a Foot. Next up was a fat sandwich of Sexy Blues>Too High>The Fez>Too High. As I mentioned, this set was very jazzy. After the End of Beginning, the rowdy crowd summoned them up for Meatless Patty. The show was over and I said goodnight to the guys. It was good to finally see Murph at a show! Alex, Phil, Stredy and Jade, Sehadi, Tim and Crystal, and Nate, were fun to hang with. Buddy kicked ass on the lightws as usual! If you go to Hookahville next weekend, stop by and say hey to him as he will be in charge of the lights. You know he's got talent as he is following in the footsteps of the great Chris K! One more pitstop at the Waffle House for a Chicken Melt Plate, double scattered and smothered!

Widespread Panic Atlanta 5/8/2006

>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> The day had finally arrived. Chris, Tim, Zee, and I headed downtown to pick up our tix at the Fox around 1:00. We were hoping we could grab tix for both nights to eliminate going thru the motions twice in two days. Sure enough, the email Holly sent was correct and we were able to grab all of our tickets. Chris, Tim, and I were in and out of the Fox in less than 7 minutes! Being in the "Z" line, has it's privelidges! Back home to hang, eat, drink, etc., prior to heading down for the show. Got to the Georgian Terrace and hung in room 306. I was able to find Chard a ducat for the show. Been seeing shows with him since the mid-nineties and needed to hook him up! We ended up setting up on the floor, where my tickets were, row N. As the lights dimmed, everyone was feeling the excitement. The Panic at the Fox, again! They opened with a crowd favorite, Contentment Blues. It was a bit rough for the opening 90 seconds. One of my highlights was the Disco>Wrangler combo, very tasty indeed. Nice having John Keane lend a hand, or shall i say a guitar. That Thang was not as good as the versions from last fall. A slower format during the jam. Another highlight was the Goin' Out West. Great job on this one. Junco was very ragged in the beginning also. When Jojo was tickling the ivories, Charles and I were thinkin' about an Early. That song I miss as much as any! Jojo had us thinkin'; that maybe, just maybe.... They started playing X-Mas Katie as we were hoping for a Dirty Biz, at least I was. Katie still rocks after the second verse with a ton of energy! Randall Bramblett was in the house to add a bit of pizzaz on on the last two tunes. I thought the beginning of Thousage was a bit choppy as well. A good set with a touch of uncertainty. Of course with the spring tour consisting of only 4 shows, we would not get mid-tour form. That is the problem with a 4 show tour.
>
> After a 42 minute intermission, game on! They kicked off set two David Byrne style with a Life During Wartime. Have enjoyed this one since it's debut at the Garden in 2003! It led smoothly into my favorite or tied for favorite Jerry Joseph cover of North. Randall came back out for a sweet Mercy. Then, the wheels came off for me. I have never been a very big fan of Nebulous or Monstroshitty. But to get both in a show, worse, back to back split by a mini-drums, not the high point of the night for me. I heard many folks groan about getting Casa along with these. I actually have always enjoyed Casa since it's debut in 2000. I still think of that magic Sunday afternoon at the Greek in 2001, with Carlos playing a very healthy lead on that version. Remember that day Charles, FOB! Great hearing the I'm Not Alone. With Lopez stepping up to bat in Sonny's Egis, we knew the Slippin' was on the way! The Parsons was very well received by the Georgia faithful. Where was karen to point a finger at? Strange how Keane joined the boys half-way through this one. We figured we would get another tune with him joining so late on this one. Boy did we, a 12 minute Bowlegged. Very strong finish, but much more to come. They opened the encore with a Little Lilly that had Dave stepping up with some loud vocals at the end. This led straight into a Papa's, a sweet placement for sure. I thought I heard Rock coming twice during the show earlier. I was wearing my Rock on a Belly t-shirt and next thing you know, Sonny had us on the way! They finished with the reprise of Papa's and it was a night!
>
> A night of fun at the Fabulous Fox! A Happy Birthday tonight to a couple of special friends, Stacey and Tracy! I won't tell everyone how each of you has reached a new decade, oops! Over to the Georgian Terrace for a few nightcaps and back home with our guests.

Widespread Panic Atlanta 5/9/2006

>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> Night two at the Fox. First, a short story of how we got tickets. Back in March, Chris wanted to know what I wanted for my birthday. I told her to get me Fox tix when they go on sale. Tall order.Chris was picking me up at the airport the Saturday tix went on sale. I asked her to bring her laptop as a backup. My plane was due in at 8:55 am. I touched down 5 minutes early. Then the heartache. I called Chris from the plane. There was a plane at our gate, and we waited, and waited. After 40 minutes, we pulled in. I got to the terminal at 9:50. I said screw the luggage. She asked me what the backup plan was. It was hitting the Courtyard south right by the airport. Been there before and knew there was a biz center. I had my laptop also. Plugged in at 2 minutes til. I got tix for the first night. Chris got bounced 2 or 3 times. She finally got in. I looked over her shoulder and saw CCC! I said buy those Mother #^^%$@^%'s, they are in the pit! She said, with those tix, I am going with you, yes!
>
> Lots of anticipation. Tim, Zee, and I hung out all day at the house. Chris got home from work mid-afternoon, and we prepared for the evening's festivities. We headed down and stopped by a few rooms at the Georgian Terrace. I talked with Jon from Tampa the night before. He had pit tix and was taping. I called him to find out how the sound was, and also how his recording came out. He told me they would not allow him to bring gear in the pit. We shall see! We got in at about 7:20 (4:20 in California)! As I got to the pit, the ushers told me I could not bring in my equipment. I told them the policy is tape from your seat, and I bought these tix almost 2 months ago. I told them if they can put me in the 10-15th row DFC, I would gladly go there, otherwise I am recording in the pit! The guy said the equipment would get damaged. I said, that was my problem and responsibility! I asked for my wristband and told them I was recording from MY seat. Well, it turns out that there is no AAA row. The BBB row is only about 20 seats, so where I was, it was in the front row! I borrowed C. Fox's MK2S omni's and set up directly in front of Dave. As they came on, i had a surrealistic feeling! Wow, what a spot to be in! In my mind I was a child, and it felt good! Mike Aaron and Neil Rainwater were about 6 seats to the left of us. The pit rocked as you could feel the floor move by the mic stand. Dave ripped my face off all night. We made eye contact several times. He was checking Chris out as she was wearing a Jerry tour shirt from 1987.
>
> The show itself was great. Being up there, the setlist didn't seem to matter as much as usual. The experience was priceless. There was a lot of sound coming off the stage. The vocals were a tad thin, but the music sounded great. The string section was a nice touch. Randall and the Brambletts were also a nice addition. They jammed out nicely. There was a video camera on a swing that cleared my mic stand by about 8 inches as I had it up about 8 feet. The opener From the Cradle has the potential of being big. I knew we were going to hear a bunch of the new stuff. The Crazy kinda reminded me of Hope in a Hopeless World. I actually said that we may very well get the new album in it's entirety for the 1st set. As soon as they started Travelin' Man, I knew we would get a Vacation and called it to my neighbors. The jam out of it was awesome! Who couldn't love the Gradle, I thought of you Kelly. Not a Big Bust fan from the first time I saw it in Texas, but even less of a Don't Wanna Lose You fan. Ouch. The Chainsaw made up for it though. Great set ender!
>
> One of the surprises of the night was the only 18 minute set break, barely time to pee. The Let's Get Down to Biz was a great way to kick off the set. Barstools is always great to hear. The last couple were played with Sam Holt's assistance. George was up to the task. The Drivin'>Second Skin sandwich was great with the strings! Soory, but May Your Ass Be Filled is an anchor weight. I still say it is like an Old Joe on Prozac. I liked the jazzed up version of Time Zones with the horns. Greta was funky, and I watched and listened to Dave play the basslines to Arlene for at least a minute plus at the end. Not crazy about the new metamorphis of Good People. My favorite versions are still with Jojo singing lead last spring. Tall Boy rocked the house. I looked at my watch and it was only 11:00. I guess with the theatres, it was an earlier show. I have seen a few versions of None of us Are Free, but this one smoked. George and John traded some tasty chops on this one. I called the City as I was hoping for Keane to play the steel. The real surprise was the Walkin'! Hadn't seen this one for 4 years. There was a point in the mid to late nineties, where I was sick of this one. I used to tell people I had been to 95 Panic shows, and seen 96 Walkin's! Tonight, it was just right. Zee snuck into the pit and saw half the second set before getting bounced by Judith, the usher. She was very cool by letting him hang for a while. My only disparaging comment was why were there so many repeats this night from Raleigh. With only 4 shows for an entire tour, there shouldn't be any repeats. I was expecting Second Skin only. Candace was great on lights. I thanked her the first night and told her I saw and spoke to Donna Jean at Smith's the night before. She got a chuckle out of that. Chris had the room sounding like, well, the FOX! Sam and crew had the stage all under control as usual. I got several text's(Carrington for one), from some of you that I was seen at the theatres, pretty funny stuff. I heard from several folks at different theatres that the sound was great. All in all, agreat evening up front in the Pit with my beautiful wife! Great neighbors(new friends Jason and Julia), great sound, lots of partying with out a problem! Great hangin' with all of you, too many to mention, but you know who you are! A nice delayed Birthday present! I had an absolute blast!

Fiddleworms Atlanta 5/7/2006
>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> We spent the entire afternoon at the house as we had Charles and Mindie, DP and Kelly, my son, and a few other folks over. Lots of home brewed beer(brown ale and red ale, yummy Sequoia). With 2 Panic shows right around the corner, this was the right call to make as I could see 5 shows, in 5 nights. I saw these guys open for the Colonel and the Codetalkers back in January at Smith's Olde Bar. With Donna Jean Godchaux McKay on the bill, I felt compelled to wander down to Smith's. I also dragged Zee and Tim, what kind of host would I be to leave them at the house! We arrived and headed upstairs. Ran into my favorite local crew, Parrish, Dillon, and Jimbo! Great guys to hang with, and they know what they are doing. They really enjoyed meeting Tim. I set up in the sweet spot, dead center about 15 feet out. There were only about 40 people at the show. I was hoping the number would be 41 thinking that we could celebrate Tracy Frank's milestone birthday! Thirty I think!
>
> They came out just after 9:00 and opened with Poor Man's Devices. I enjoyed the Florence as it had a very nice twang to it. Someone playing washboard joined the band for a good version of Slide on Down the Road. They closed the first set with Tension. We had 27 minutes to unwind and hit the back room. Parish and Dillon were fun to hang out with as always! They had the room sounding very good. The second set opened with Let it Pass By. The third song of the set was a song written by Donna's son. It was a short second set, followed by a 2 song encore. Donna Jean STILL looks good to me. She was lightly dancing as she sang on most of the songs. She had a bit of trouble stepping down off the stage a couple of times. Someone was supplying them with shots during the night. Ted C. and his buddy who was celebrating his birthday were on hand, and trashed by the end. We hung in the back with Russell and Wolf Fiddle after the show. Back home to reheat some stuffed shells, chicken wings, and various other goodies.

Jerry Joseph Atlanta 5/6/2006

>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> Sorry about the delay, still trying to get caught up. I picked up Tim and Zee at the airport. We headed up to the house and chilled for a couple of hours. Over to Sapporito's for some Calzones, Slices, Baked Ziti, and Chicken Parmesan(For you Tammy). Excellent as always! Headed down to the Variety Playhouse as Jerry was opening up for Moonshine Still. we found John already in the sweet spot. I clamped on to his stand to make more room.. Charles and D.P. soon arrived and Charles let me borrow his 4v's, so I slapped them on the actives.
>
> Not one of Jerry's more inspired shows. He had played Portland the previous night and flew in for the weekend. i am guessing he was probably tired. He was very subdued as he played mostly mellow material. He came on at about 9:25 and opened with miracle Day. He played Muzzle and Muscle back to back. He closed out with a Gunsmoke>Climb to Safety. It was only a 55 minute set as he was the opener. The crowd was on the thin side as most of the people arrived to see Moonshine Still.
>
> We decided to stay for Moonshine Still's first set. They were parting ways with their drummer Fred, of 10 years, so it was a special show for them. I hadn't seen them since November of 2004 when they opened for Leftover Salmon 2 nights in the Southeast. They played a bit over an hour. Cecil "Peanut" Daniels was their guest as he sat in on 3 songs that set. He played percussion on 1 tune and his sax on the other 2. He added quite a bit to the Why Aren't You Dancing. The crowd was pretty good and definitely into the show. I hate to sound negative, but the guy doing lights had those elevated lights on the back of the stage that he kept shining into the crowd. Being in the 3rd and 4th rows beyond the pit, the sweet spot , we were getting "blinded by the light" (Springsteen/Manfred Mann's Earthband).
>
> After the set we bugged out. Charles, Mindy, D.P., and Kelly came out to the burbs and hung with us for a few hours. Good times for sure!
