Trey Anastasio Cleveland 7/19/2006

> >
> > Hey Y'All,
> >
> > After 2 days of cleaning up a golf tournament, I spent the day at 2 of my
accounts and also at the corporate office. I was thinking about going to
Cleveland for Trey after getting an email last week from Brian. I decided that I
needed a break and it was time to see some music. I left work at about 4:00,
picked up my gear, and headed east on the Ohio Turnpike. I did make a pit stop
to so i would not go hungry. I ordered 2 shrimp rolls and some Chicken with Sno
Peas, very hot! Extemely tasty, and it was gone before I hit the Fremont exit!
It was the usual 2 hour ride. I arrived at about 6:30 and the first person i see
is my taping buddy, Jesse. We walked in and went directly to FOB land. Brian was
already there holding court. I clamped on to Jesse's stand and was ready to
roll. The Duo, Marco Benevento and Joe Russo, opened up. I have seen them 3-4
times in the past couple of years. I have been out of the loop and do not check
Trey's setlists or lineups. I found out Mike Gordon and the Duo, Marco Benevento
and Joe Russo, make up Trey's band. This peaked my curiosity and was looking
forward to their set. I saw Chris K., as he was back on tour with Trey after his
stint with the Black Crowes. He mentioned not seeing me but he knows what I've
been up to.
> >
> > The Duo opened up the show just afte 7:00. They played 7 songs, the first
being Soba. No clue on the rest of their setlist, which was about 42 minutes
long.
> >
> > After a 41 minute break, Trey and company took the stage just before 8:30 to
the delight of the anxious crowd. I would estimate only about 3,000 in the house
for this General Admision show. The second song was Drifting, which got the
Phish Heads grooving. Mike sang Beltless Buckler next, kind of mellow. The Mud
City including a Billy Jean Jam stretched out over 18 minutes. I thought the
These Eyes>Get Back rocked! Very interesting choice of covers. The Duo excused
themselves, and Trey and Mike sat down acoustically for the Hendrix cover of
You've Got Me Floating. This segued nicely into Willie Nelson's On the Road
Again, and that segued into the crowd rousing Wilson. A funny thing happened
about halfway through Wilson, everyone switched to electric and finshed the
song. The final song of the set was the Who's, Who Are You, a very nice 12
minute version complete with Pete Townsend windmills! The show was better than I
expected as I went in with an open mind.
> >
> > The sound was very good, the weather was great, and as it got darker,
Kuroda's lights got better! Imagine that. Great seeing him as always. There were
8 taping rigs in the FOB section. Nice hangin' with Alex, Jesse, Brian, Ben,
Steve, Eric, Scott, Melissa, Damian, Chris, and Tyler. Where in the world was
Levi for this home show? I had plans for going to the Happy Dog to see Corinne
play after the show, but on my way, I received a call from my my General
Manager's husband. She was taken to the hospital and now, I had to be in Findlay
early the next day, so, back in the Jeep and a 2 hour ride back. Here is how it
went down:

Phil and Friends Columbus 7/14/2006

> >
> > Hey Y'All,
> >
> > Sorry for the delay, lots of work. So here I was faced at going through a
summer without seeing even 1 Phil and Friends show. I missed the home show in
Atlanta due to work. I was in the midst of working a 100+ hour week of physical,
stressful labor. I don't mind the 2 hour 45 minute drive down, but I was not
about to drive back at midnight and go to work at 5:00 am! Jeff Frank calls me
to ask if I am doing the Indy or Chicago shows. I told him the closest thing
would be Indy and told him my predicament. Tim was working in Columbus so my
usual "bad" influence, was not here to help me get back. Jeff was going to DTB
in Grand Rapids. He was convinced and excited to see 3 Phil shows in row. I left
him a key to my room. He got in sometime around 3 a.m. I got up at 4:30 and went
to work. The plan was to leave the golf tourney at 3, meet Jeff and hit the
road. I call him at 3:15 to let him know I am on the way. I get to my room that
smelled of heavy garlic as Jeff ate some middle eastern food just before I
arrived at 3:35. He had the air conditioning turned off and the room stunk! He
put a do not disturb sign on the door, so on top of a hot smelly room, I never
had my room cleaned! He hadn't even showered for the day yet! I pushed him
along. He moves like an 80 year old. I got a bit even as I ordered my dinner. We
picked it up at China Chef on our way to the expressway. The extra spicy chicken
with broccoli, with extra garlic, had his eyes burning! The 2 shrimp rolls were
exquisite! We hit Bowling Green and I drove the rest of the way. He would drive
home.
> >
> > We got to Promo West at about 7:20 for the 8 oclock show. I bought our
tickets as Jeff rechecked his taping gear at least 7 times! We go in and see the
tapers section on the lawn. We stop by and I asked if anyone wanted to run down
front with me. Tape Cat already was down there and got the boot. I was told as
we entered that taping was in the section only. I don't think so. I stayed in
the section and got my gear ready. I put a clamp on Mark's rig in case I decided
to stay, or get busted below and come back. The large pit was not filling very
fast. At about 7:50, I talked Pete into coming down front. We set up in the
middle in the back. Bill and his buddy spread out to give me some room. They
were the perfect "bookend" blockers! Awesome job you guys!
> >
> > Phil and Company hit the stage shortly after 8:00. Althea was not the
strongest opener I could pick, but the Other One that followed hit the spot.
Cryptical split the Ryan Adams composition of Cold Roses. Phil continues to
feature his songs at just about every show. We got a double shot of Candyman as
they played the Mississippi John Hurt version. This segued into a Hunter/Garcia
Candyman that just did not seem right. The pace was way too fast, like ragtime.
Casey Jones ended the abbreviated set. I looked down at Pete's V-3 and noticed
he had the HPF2 ON!!!!!!!!! Tainted by Jeff Frank? Since then, Jeff refuses to
use HPF2 as it is not "cool" anymore.
> >
> > The second set had some highlights. A Jam>Birdsong got things off to a nice
start. This flowed into one of my highlights, Watchtower. A Nobody Girl
sandwich, filled with China Doll. Not for me. Whether Joan or Phil sings China
Doll, I don't care for it. The set ended very strong with a delightful Unbroken
Chain>Wheel>China-Cat>Rider! A 9:15 Rider! That was very hot. The encore was
not earth shattering.
> >
> > It was not the best Phil show I have seen, that was for sure. I would rather
have Rob sing more leads. Too much Joan. After seeing a couple of years of the
quintet, other configurations of this band seem to pale in comparison. I did
enjoy the Chris Robinson addition last fall. I gave this show a 6 out of 10. Tim
thought I was much too generous. I still had a great time and thanks to Nate's
buddy, I was in good shape.
> >
> > During the 2nd set, I caught wind of the Spikedrivers cd release party at
Little Brothers. My last show there was in 1997 for the Hypnotic Clambake gig.
Jeff drove us there but started to get cold feet. I coaxed him inside to a full
room that was swinging! I threw my stand up in the middle of the raucous crowd.
I was rolling within 2 minutes of arriving, or 21 minutes after the closing note
at Promo West. Jeff T. and Pickle showed up during the first set. Jeff was
moping as he sat next to me. He continually sent me text messages threatening to
leave me there if we did not leave by 1:00 a.m. If it was up to Jeff, we would
have left after 5 minutes. Let's All go to Church sounded very good. I enjoyed
the Tennessee Heartthrob and Black Water. They closed out with the Dillinger
Ballad. Nate and Kate showed up. The music was very good, and the energy inside
was strong. The set ended and Jeff headed out to his car. I packed up and said
goodbye to our friends. I went backstage to thank Jesse, Megan, and Paul.

Alice Cooper Toledo 7/9/2006

> Hey Y'All,
>
> Been a long weekend of work getting ready for the upcoming LPGA event. After
getting in at about 6:45 am!(that's another great story for another day), and
going to work in the heat all day, I was not sure if I was up to seeing a show.
After a bite to eat and a shower, that soon changed. Dinner was nothing special
as I picked up a pizza locally. I had Alice Cooper penciled in for about 2
weeks. My Manager from Akron is in town helping and he loves rock and roll. I
decided to entertain his love of music. We went over to the Stranahan at about
6:50. Doors were at 7:00 for the 7:30 show. I went to the box office to check
out prices and locations. I saw a guy with his young son with a couple of
extras. I inquired and saw they were awesome seats. i offered him $30.00, the
lowest of the 3 tiered pricing. He accepted, and the next thing you know, we are
in the 9th row right center! The Stranahan is low-keyed as far as pat downs.
There are no metal detectors either, so I was planning on the 722 getting in
with me. No sweat.
>
> I found out there was an opener, The Vacation, a band out of Hollywood. At
first, I was not going to record them, just save the risk for Alice. I couldn't
help myself, so they got recorded. Definitely not a keeper for me. Did not
connect with their music. I mention it because of the diverse group of folks I
post to. Many have surprised me with their show of interest in some of the more
obscure stuff I have seen.
>
> After a stage change of about 37 minutes, it was time for some theatrical rock
and roll. I have not seen Alice since the 70's. My cousin Rick and I used to
listen to their albums in the early seventies. Did get to see him in Phoenix a
couple of years when my company did the concessions for the Standard Register
Ping LPGA event. He lives by Moon VAlley CC and comes to support the tour. The
lights dimmed and Phantom of the Opera played as he made his way on stage. The
place was totally energized. Everyone was on their feet! I forgot how many hits
Alice had. I recognized most of the songs. The band featured 2 very decent
guitarists. The drummer was Eric Singer, who has toured with both Kiss and Guns
and Roses. Lots of activity on stage featuring some actors. A polished
production for sure. Alice found himself in a straight jacket during We're All
Crazy. He had his head chopped off in a guilletine. The hits kept coming, from
No More Mr. Nice Guy, to Billion Dollar Babies, to Eighteen, to Schools Out,
etc. The entire floor stood for the whole show. I was very surprised. The show
came out very well. I listened to a little bit as I got ready for work very
early this morning.

Auburn Jam Bash 7/8/2006

>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> I ended up working all day Friday, and up early to work most of Saturday in
the oppressive heat. I saw the Auburn Jam Bash with 2 days of lots of music. I
missed Friday, but was thinking if I can leave work early afternoon on Saturday,
I can enjoy some music. I left work at about 2:00, and headed west on the Ohio
Turnpike towards Indiana. I cruised very fast and hit the gate at 4:00. I parked
near the side entrance in the campground and headed in with my gear. The gear
was all ready as I assembled it while I was driving. I went FOB and found Shawn
and Chris, 2 of my Indy taping buddies. I clamped on to Shawn and hit record.
The Shanti Groove was about 75% thru their set. The next song they invite Vince
Herman up to join the fun. He walks up to the mic and says "Everyone wish Z-Man
a Happy Birthday"! First of all, it was not my birhtday. Second, I was amazed he
spotted me within 3 minutes of me getting there! They played a couple of Bill
Monroe tunes, The Wheel Hoss and Rocky Road Blues. Next was a great version of
Sweet Louisiana. Haven't heard that since the Outformation late night on
6/24/2006!A great cover of Dylan's Buckets of Rain. They finished their set of
which I got to see about 40 minutes of. Since the festival was a bit behind,
Vince stayed up and went on with his set.
>
> A Vince set is always chock full of lots of interesting songs. He played many
of his old favorites and some nice covers. A Wake and Bake near the beginning of
the set got everyone going. The Amnesia was great to hear. The Johnny Cash cover
of the L&N Don't Stop Here Anymore was well received. I also enjoyed Bromberg's
Dangerman. He brought up some help via the Shantee Groove boys. He closed the
set with an inspired version of our departed friend Mark Vann's Funky Mountain
Fogdown. First one I've heard since his passing. It brought back many memories
of some great times! I got to hang with Vince after the set. I started to get
munched out and decided to taste the wares of the various vendors. I settled for
a Burrito Bowl from a local vendor. Very tasty.
>
> Next up was Railroad Earth. Haven't seen them since my birthday in March. They
played a kick-ass 95 minute set. I only wished they could have played another
hour! Chris, Shawn, and myself, were amazed that Jeff Frank would blow off
seeing this great band, to go see.....Liz Phair. He claims to love RRE. I can't
figure him out. After Vince intoduced the boys, they began their set with a Cold
Water. Next up was a personal favorite, Elko. The Arcadian Driftwood was a nice
cover. A long Smiling Like a Buddah, set up a fantastic set closer, New Lee
Highway Blues! I always loved seeing Bromberg do this one! After the set, I
spoke with Tim Carbone, RRE fiddle player. We spoke about Bromberg with me
telling him that he was one of my heroes in music. We got on the subject of
Sharon and I told him how I saw Bromberg at the Stanley Theatre in Utica, NY,
1978 do this one. Only that night, he had a stripper from the joint down the
road come in and dance to the song. Tim told me I saw him that night. He played
in the opening band! Talk about small world! Mike P. did a great job on sound.
You could clearly hear every instrument. Time to eat again. This time I settled
for a stuffed baked potato from a couple of guys closing shop. A loaded baked
potato with lots of fresh bacon and cheddar cheese for only a buck!
>
> Next up was Ekoostik Hookah. I saw these guys a couple of weeks ago for the
first time since they rejoined forces. Coming on at almost 9, we still expected
2 sets. A very appropriate opener, Sun Goes Down, and it did! Another Washboard
Annie and Harmonic Convergence for me. They brought up Jason from Shanti Groove
for 3 songs, one of which was Little Maggie. He also helped out on Somewhere
Down the Line, that included a short Drum Solo. A very long Back Seat followed
by the set closer, Ballad of Sam McCully. A 2 hour and 20 minute set. After
Vince helped out with the raffle, the boys played a 3 song encore, capped off by
Comforably Numb! Dan had the sound just right for this set. Thank you Dan! Time
for my midnight feeding. Ah, the crepe vendor! I ordered a vegetarian crepe. The
dude had 2 gas crepe burners. He poured out a smooth batter onto the 16" round
grill. He sauteed fresh onions, mushrooms, basil, and tomatoes. He put this on
the crepe along with fresh spinach a a bunch of Feta Cheese. Scrumptious! My
only suggestion, get either plastic or foam plates. A 1/2 penny paper plate
doesn't get it.
>
> Chris had me staying for the late night Lotus set. After waiting over an hour,
I had thoughts of leaving as I had a 2 hour ride back. I endured and Lotus came
on at about 1:15 a.m. Only saw them once before. They played about a 2 hour set.
i was amazed how many people trickled back to the main stage so late to see
these guys. They are not a vocal oriented band. They did throw in some samples
during a couple of tunes. The bass was cranked up, and had the place dancing
like crazy. They are fine musicians. I am not very familiar with their music or
song titles. Chris enjoys these guys quite a bit. By the end of the set, i was
ready to take my turn at the wheel for 2 hours of drive time. Not quite. After
saying goodbye to my friends, I headed back to my Jeep. A funny thing happened.
I ran into a gathering in front of Sue Ellen and David's RV at their camping
space. It was Vince, Jason, and Cliff of EH playing acoustic. My natural
reaction was to pull out my mics and begin recording. David went into his rv and
grabbed me his mic stand. I set up right in the middle of the throng of people.
It was like a camp fire sing a long! It lasted for the next 32 minutes. I
grabbed a grilled chicken pita sandwich with Tzaziki sauce and a side of Greek
salad. THEN, I got behind the wheel and headed east for my 2 hour ride. I
enjoyed listening to the recording as I drove. I also spoke to DP and Carrington
as they just got out of the Panic show in Berkeley at the Greek. Arrived back at
6:45 a.m., OUCH. Get to take a 90 minute nap and back to work Sunday morning!
>
> I met another Indy taper Kegan, and his girlfriend Dani. Met lots of other
great folks, got to hang in the back with lots of the musicians, and enjoyed
some of the epicurean delights. I met Tyler, who along with his dad, promoted
and ran the festival. He was very accomodating. I asked if he could shut off the
large 26 foot truck that was running to the right of the stage as you could hear
the motor running. He took care of it. Chris had an extra double size folding
chair that was VERY comfortable. A very nice layout for both music and camping.
It was surreal after dark with almost a full moon, fireworks going off
everywhere, sitting back and watching the traffic flow on I-69 as the band
played on! My only suggestion would be to allow the food vendors into the fenced
area where the music was. There was tons of room in there. Walking way out to
get somehing to eat was a pain in the ass. They offered Newcastle drafts that
went for for $4.00 for a 14 oz. , and $8.00 for a 32 oz. I was able to access ac
power to chargfe my batteries during the night. Great hanging with the other 4
tapers, Bradley and Lisa, and everyone else. A nice treat having Buddy work the
lights again! Very nice out in the field of dreams!

Dickey Betts and Great Southern Detroit 7/6/2006

>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> Busy this week setting up the golf course concessions and catering for the
Jamie Farr Owens Classic in Toledo. Long days of loads of physical work. I had
tonight penciled in on my calendar. I called Tom in Detroit the day before to
talk him into going. He said it was a 7 pm show. I called him at 4:50 to see
what time it started. He said it was in the paper to start at 5:00! I had at
least a 2 hour drive with traffic so it was not to be. I asked him to call the
number to verify this. He called back and said there was an opener and Dickey
would be on from 8-10. I was in and so was Tom.
>
> I left work and headed north on I-23. I stopped in Dearborn at La Shish for
some eats to take with me. A Kibbe sandwich and a Shwarma sandwich. Of course
some homous as well! The 2 sandwiches made it about 12 miles on I-94 East. I got
to downtown by the riverfront. Parking was $6-$10in the surrounding lots. I
found a spot on the street about 4 blocks away, grabbed my gear, and headed
over. The show was free. The venue was right in front of the twin GM buildings
on the waterfront. The stage was set up in a plaza, very little wind. It was
right on the river and you could hear the boat horns as they cruised by. There
across the river was Canada. I walked up to a roped off area to find a spot. I
looked inside this VIP area, and there was Tom setting up his 4v's. You can
never have too many 4v's, so I clamped on! We chatted for about 20 minutes until
Dickey came on just after 8:00. He had lots of new faces in his band. Dangerous
Dan was gone and he also had a new keyboard player. His son Duane played guitar
along with another new guitarist. He had a female percussionist, who also sang
back-up vocals.
>
> They opened the set with a great instrumental, High Falls. This segued into
One Way Out, with the keyboardist singing. Stange hearing Dickey cover a Gregg
song. A great Franklin's Tower>Blue Sky to everyone's delight. The heavy hitter
of the set was In Memory of Elizabeth Reed. A timeless classic, no doubt. Duane
and the other guitarist shared a few twin leads, but Dickey held court on many
of his expected songs. After Liz Reed, Dickey announce they were taking a break
and returning for another set!
>
> After about 20 minutes, they emerged and opened with a Back Where it All
Began. A couple of new tunes followed. Good to see Dickey still writing new
tunes. The highlight of the second set was Jessica. I actually called Farelli on
my drive back as I customarily do after a show. I told him they played his
girlfriend(Jessica). The crowd beckoned for an encore, and we got Ramblin' Man.
Everything but Southbound tonight. Almost 2 1/2 hours, and a free show at that!
The sound was very good. A bit of feedback after the 2nd song, but the guitar
tech found the ground problem. I felt compelled to stop at the MGM on the way
out of town. I found the only spot open at a $15.00 blackjack table. I won my
first hand. Then, I lose 6 in a row. I fought back and could not seem to get
into the black until I hit 3 in a row. I got up after 30 minutes and cashed in a
profit of $30.00. The 90 minute driove back needed at least 1 stop for
nourishment. Tonight, it would be Sliders! Yes folks, White Castle. My employees
paid dearly all day!
