moe. Cleveland 1/29/2006

moe. Cleveland 1/29/2006
>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> My annual budget meetings were moved till Friday afternoon at the beginning of the week. That blew my trip to Indy on Thursday after work for the two moe. shows. Worked from 4:00 am til 8 pm Saturday, so no Cincy show. I was planning on the Cleveland show anyway, so, 1 is better than none! If I wasn't sure I was at a moe show, that feeling was reassured when I saw tapers KC and John M! Nice turnout of our taping buddies. Always good to hang with Jesse, Alex, Jacques a Row, James, John, KC, and a new acquaintance, Gary! Erik hung up front with us most of the show. We set up FOB aright of center due to not blocking anyone in the soundboard. For a Sunday night, it was a very good crowd. Steve on sound has always done a very consistant job, and tonight was no different. The lights were also vey good.
>
> Just after 8:15, the screen was lifted and there were the boys on stage. The show opened up a bit on the mellow side. A nice Crab Eyes opener. We got a nice Run for Your Life jam>Water. Some very nice segues throughout the 1st set. The Spaz Medicine>Mexico set closer was awesome. I don't care how many times I have seen Mexico, it SMOKES! We had a bit of a scare as a young kid that I watched smoke a fatty, passed out and was falling towards the rigs. I caught him with my left leg and spared the gear.
>
> After a short break, the boys came back for a very strong set. A mellow jam turned into The Pit. A long rendition of Kids and also a long Dr. Graffenberg. The Buster>Cornflake Girl was very sweet. I believe the latter was written by Tori Amos. At first I thought the She encore was a weak way to end the show. Five minutes later, once the killer jam developed, I lost that thought! All in All, a great show, with some great company!
>
> There were several moments with Chuck and Al playing some duo leads that were quite Allmanesque! The pre-jam intro to Mexico was similar to Ramblin' Man.
>
> HERE'S A GOOD ONE: I spoke to Nate last night on my drive to the show. He was taking the Schoeps to run the Poppa Grows Funk show. I get a call at 3:00 am as I pull back into Toledo. He had the mics and V3, but no medium to run it into to. He gets the Jeff Frank taping award for January 2006!
>
> Also, congratulations as I hear some great news that Allegra and Scott will be getting married! Way to go girl!!!

Derek Trucks Band Cleveland 1/19/2006

Derek Trucks Band Cleveland 1/19/2006
>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> After a five day void of live music, I was planning on a trip to Cleveland for some entertainment. As it turns out, my company wanted me to go there to attend a couple of pre-bid conferences that same day! Perfect. At the end of the day, I changed and headed up to the Odeon located in the Flats. I had seen numerous shows there over the years. Sadly, they will be closing their doors sometime this year. Kind of bittersweet. I had talked to my taping buddy Jesse a couple of days prior, and planned on meeting him there. Doors were at 7:00 for the 8:00 show. I got there at 6:58 and found a parking spot, the last one on the street, right accross the street from the entrance! Nice start.
>
> I went in and was amazed that even 15 minutes prior to the start, hardly anyone was there. They made us tape against the ledge on the left side. They even posted signs to that effect. We set up about 10 feet towards the center. "Fred Flintsone", of the security crew, was very cool and told us not to block the dude working the board. He let us stay. Raphael, Mike, Steve, and Dave were in the house and set up as well. Where were Levi, Terry, and Melissa? At 8:15, the show started. within 15 minutes, to my amazement, the floor filled in rather nicely.
>
> The first set was typical in lenght, about 50 minutes. My highlight had to be the Key to the Highway. Mike handles the vocals very nicely. We did catch a couple of new tunes. Nothin' Changes was very good. My last DTB show was in Detroit in October. Count M'Butu was at that show, and continues to tour with Derek, adding both percussion and backup vocals.
>
> After a 35 minute break, they hit the stage for round 2. They played about a 55 minute set. I thought the show was very upbeat and bouncy. Everyone looked to be jamming nicely together and having fun. They played several tunes that were noticably shorter than the usual length. I got to here the Rastaman Chant I was looking for in October. This segued nicely into Let's Go Get Stoned. The All I Do and Music were very tight. During the set, my taper buddy Steve heard that Glenn Schwartz was playing for free at Major Hoopplles, accross the Flats. I got directions from the securtiy guard. After the two song encore, we broke down expeditiously and headed out. I walked out with Yonrico Scott and thanked him for a fun show. I then walked by Derek as he was going to the bus. I said hello and thanked him too. Once everyone noticed him, they were on him like white on rice. I must say he is a perfect gentlemen, and handles himself great! He will shake hands and sign autographs for everyone.
>
> Meanwhile, I got in the Jeep and headed accross the river. Glenn was the guitarist for the old PGE back in the day. He was also in the James Gang, although not with Joe Walsh. In 8 minutes, I arrived and parked. Glenn was on stage with his bass player (brother), and drummer. They were in the back corner of an old bar next to an old bowling machine with the softball size wooden balls! I busted thru the crowd in a hurry all the way to the front. Steve wasn't there yet so I started to pull out my equipment when I got a NO from Glenn's girlfriend and his manager. I was bummed cause it was a great blues jam unfolding. They sort of watched me retreat. I went behind a table and decuded that I was going to walk out of Major Hoopplles with a recording! I set up the RadioSchoeps into the 722 in stealth mode and got the last 10 munutes of the set. During that time, Steve had gotten there and was busted trying to set up his rig. We talked to Glenn's manager and he said if we can get permission, we could tape. Glenn is wwaayyy out there! I could not even get his attention. Steve finally walked up and asked permission. He got an emphatic NO and we left. After I got to my Jeep, I had 2nd thoughts and went back in stealth mode, in the hat. I steered clear of his manager and was able to get about 30 minutes of the very short 2nd set. I felt vindicated! The man was clearly in a zone and can still play! He plays on Thursdays there and would reccomend seeing him. If you are gonna tape, be prepared to stealth!

The Kinsey Report Swanton 1/14/2006

The Kinsey Report Swanton 1/14/2006
>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> After 7 days without a show, I decided to make it happen. I worked most of the day in the office and thought about seeing some blues since I saw the Kinsey Report was going to be in the area on Saturday night. I have not seen them without their Dad, Lester "Big Daddy" Kinsey. He passed away a few years back. They are from Gary, Indiana, about 45 minutes from Chicago. I was going to the show intending to stealth, but was open to any options available. Swanton is not a booming metropolis, but rather a small town just west of the Toledo airport. They were playing at a club called Hines Farm. In all the years I have come to Toledo, I never heard of it. I got to Swanton and stopped at an "in- convenince" store as I call them. I got directions and lo and behold, I found it on the first try! It was in the country. They had a few big grills and a smoker fired up in front.
>
> I went inside and met Jackie, part of the Griffin family that bought the facility about 20 years ago. I gave her my twelve dollars and walked past the bar and towards the back where the opening band, Blues Messanger was setting up. I asked the soundman, Mud Foot, at the small board if taping was cool. He asked what I had in mind and offered the board. Either 1/4" or RCA. I had both and after he finished up, i plugged in. He was running sound and playing harp with the opener. I told him he looked very familiar. He said he works at the Ark in Ann Arbor. That's how I recognized him. I asked if he knew my buddy Jeff. When I told him Jeff sees almost every show there and tapes, he knew him. I walked around the club. It was built in the early fifties. The concert posters on the all the walls go back to that time. I was very impressed to see the big names that came through and played here. Pinetop Perkins, John Lee Hooker, Jimmy Reed, and many others. Check out the website for some historic facts, www.hinesfarm.com.
>
> Turns out Blues Messanger was very good. They played just over 2 hours, a long set for an opener! After Mud Foot got the sound down, he joined in on harp and vocals. We got to hear many blues standards. They invited "Big Blues Doug" up to sing a song. The second half of their set, they had Dave Raymond, their original guitarist join until they finished the set. Until Mud Foot joined in, Jimmy the drummer handled a bunch of the vocals. Very nice renditions of the Sky is Cryin', Walkin' Blues, Jimmy Reed's Pretty Thing, and Leave My Girl Alone. They also covered Robert Cray's Smokin' Gun. They even shared a few originals with us. At the end of the set, I turned around and to my surprise, the place was packed with at least 175 people.
>
> Between bands, I stepped out for some fresh air. I heard from Geoff and Diana at the Independant in San Francisco as they were going to see the North Mississippi All Stars. BTW, can someone forward the NMAS setlist from the Variety on 12/28/2005? Everyone is looking for it. I returned as The Kinsey Report was ready to go. They took the stage before 10:00 p.m. After an instrumental, they tore into Keep Messin' with Me. By now, several couples had begun to dance and by the end of the set, the "dance floor" was packed! They were pretty tight as you would expect after playing together since the early 80's. They covered the Percy Mayfield tune We Will Live our Life Together. My favorite tune of the set was the Outskirts of Town that stretched out over 16 minutes. Lots of great keyboards and guitar licks. They closed the set with 3 very strong covers, Jammin', Get out of My Life Woman, and Everyday I Have the Blues. Donald Kinsey, the guitarist had spent some time in Bob Marley's band way back and the Jammin' proved that. After the one hour set, I stepped out for some fresh air. I checked out the BBQ and reserved a plate for after the show.
>
> The second set started up to the delight of the lively crowd. It was a nice mix of all ages. I did not feel old at all, as there were several folks that had me by a long shot! A nice Yonder Wall right out of the gate. Rufus Thomas's Walk the Dog, Big Boss Man, and Howling Wolf were the highlights of the show. I tried to get Mud Foot to go up and blow some harp on Jimmy Reed's Bad Avenue. He walked up there but the boys did not acknowlege him. After several drinks, he was loosened up and ready. I coaxed him up there for the 13 minute Howling Wolf. He got up and started to crank out the notes. Donald walked over next to him and encouraged him even more. A very nice moment. I will be sure to burn him a copy. Tehy came back for an encore of Rock Me Baby.
>
> After the show, I picked up my rib dinner complete with baked beans and corn, and headed to my room. Very tasty, not as good as the Fox Brothers, but it hit the spot. Here is how it went down:

Col. Bruce and the Codetalkers Atlanta 1/6/2006

Col. Bruce and the Codetalkers Atlanta 1/6/2006
>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> Happy New Year again! I was excited to see my first show of the year, albeit it took 6 days to do! I spoke to Michael in Memphis a couple of days prior and knew he would be in to visit Ash and come over to Smith's! I headed down and hooked up with my man Dillon. Downstairs, I met my new friend Tiffany with Aware Records as they were promoting John Mayer's new disc with a listening party. I never made it back down there until after 2:30, when the Codetalkers were done. David showed up later on, along with Neal, Stoudy, and Tracy. To my surprise, Ike Stubblefield was sitting in on keyboards. I had the good fortune to meet him while I was working in Toledo a few years back. He has moved to Atlanta and plays every Monday with a Hammond Organ jam session. Check it out one week.
>
> The Fiddle Worms opened up and played about a 1 hour set. They were rockabilly. They wrote all of their songs except I think one. I recorded as always. They had 3 guitarists, 1 acoustic, and 2 electric that shared the leads, along with a keyboard player, drummer, and bass.
>
> The Colonel and the boys hit the stage at about 11:20. They played a long first set, barely fits on a disc. After 1 hour, I figured it would be one long set. Wrong, they came out and played a shorter 2nd set. Bobby Lee Rogers was as entertaining as usual. He can play the trombone without even having one! It was strange to see Col. Bruce sit at the pedal steel the entire evening. We caught a few of the normal staples such as I'm So Glad, Fixin' to Die, Compared to What, Workin' on a Building, and Basically Frightened. They played a version of Ike Stubblefield, the first one that I have heard with Ike sitting in! It was a fun evening. The recording sounds very good.

Widespread Panic Atlanta 12/31/2005

Widespread Panic Atlanta 12/31/2005
>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> First of all Happy New Year to those of you I did not get to see last week. It was a fun filled week of 6 shows in 5 nights! I had a houseful of out of town friends in for the run. How can you pace yourself when it is all wide open? It all began at Smith's with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, then on to the Variety for the NMAS and also Sam and Prosser's party late that night. Next was the Panic show at the Roxy and quickly over to Smith's for the Outformation show. Then two nights of Panic at the Philips Arena. It took some doing, but we were able to score floor tickets a few days before the shows.
>
> We all congregated up in FOB land. Always great to hang with my wife Chris, Zee, Charles and Mindie, Dave and Karen, DP & Kelly, Geoff & Diana, Carrington, Kristen, Frank, Martin, Stacey, E.Scott, Brian and Leslie, Michael, Adam & Heather, Matt, Joe W., Chris C., and the rest of the gang! Some of you who were not there were missed, and you know who I mean. Stacey supplied the blow up mics as Nate & Kate were with us in spirit! Security was tight as they were cracking down on tapers up there. These shows were highly anticipated to be off the hook. It always seems like that feeling every year. The show on the thirtieth was solid with some nice nuggets to please everyone. I headed downtown with my wife and friends. We went over to the Omni Hotel for some pre-show festivities. We all mentioned what we might hear tonight. I mentioned an acoustic first set that was not met with a great deal of approval. I always like that format. I enjoy the acoustic sound that George can put out. It goes without saying that I was happy to see the acoustic set up on stage when we entered.
>
> We were treated to the second version of Otis Reading's Dock of the Bay. I sure am glad the large crowd got to enjoy that one! It was nice at the Roxy and this would be the only repeat of the three nights, and deservidely so. It was written by Otis Redding and Steve Cropper and recorded on 12/7/67, 3 days before Otis's untimely death due to a plane crash. It was the number 1 song for 4 weeks in '68. The set progressed nicely with some of my favorites, C. Brown, and my newest favorite from Vic, Expiration Day. What a great song! I grooved on George's rendition of the Billy Joe Shaver tune Fast Train to Georgia. This set the theme for the evening "Georgia". Always great to see Can't Find My Way Home. Six of the eleven songs were covers. The set clocked in at about 1:06.
>
> After the first set, we were treated to the drumming squirrel. on the video screens behind the stage. The character is from the cartoon that Panic wrote a song for on the Cartoon Network. The second set was short and sweet. It rocked open with Action Man. Things got thick with a nice Pleas>Mr. Soul. Then I got my favorite Panic song, Diner. Not the longest, about 15 minutes, but well done with some nice rapping. This lead into a Surprise with George nailing the intro. On to City of Dreams, but what happened to Germany and Europe? I thought the set ended a bit weak with a song I have seen more than enough of, Give.
>
> Lots of anticipation for New Years. What were they going to bust out? After the countdown, exchanging hugs and kisses and champagne with our loved ones and friends so near, it was back to the Georgia theme. JB did a great rendition of Georgia on my Mind followed by the classic Midnight Train to Georgia! This was followed by more traditional Panic Ain't Life Grand>Greta>North>Ribs & Whiskey. I swear I heard Maggot Brain coming and said so to DP. It came out of a nice jam and then led into Big Woolly. The Conrad that followed had JB making reference to Michael Jackson in the song. It was Saturday night, so why not throw in a Flewzy?
>
> We saw Sam Holt with with a guitar strapped on as the boys came back for the encore. Our little contingent up front was psyched! You have to understand, Sam is one of US! I met Sam taping back in 1996 and 1997 in the midwest when I patched out of him. It makes all of us Panic Freaks proud to see one of our own, with our favorite band! Those lucky enough to be at the Fillmore in November know what I am talking about! Sam ripped the opening notes to Impossible and the place exploded! I believe that the last one I saw was the classic 3 night Oak Mountain run of 2002. This segued into the second Gimme of the year, both with Sam at the helm. Fishwater was next and then they closed with another staple, Porch Song. I think it is safe to say that everyone walked, or stumbled out of the Philips, as happy campers. I thought Chris did a great job with the sound, and Candace was wonderful on the lights! When is the next Panic show???
