Widespread Panic Indianapolis 7-27-2005

>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> What can I say about tonite! Let me say that I had a blast! Best of all, we had a whole chunk of real estate in row r and s, DFC! It was a blast hangin' with Nate, Drew, Lance, Gordon, Tim, Alex, Teresa, Jeff "hpf 2" Frank, Smiley, Eric, Lara and Mark (so glad they flew up north), and Dr. Will. They came out of the gate like they were on a mission. You couldn't have asked for a better set! A few people complained it was short, but look at the content! A Postcard opener>Low Rider, whew. It was sad to say there were only about 5,500 people to witness the show. The whole first set was the HEAT! I told Ernie in the afternoon we need a Down on the Farm. I got my second Sedated in the past 2 weeks! I never expected Chilly after they just played it in Chicago. It was Lara's 50th show, so I told her we were gonna get SMOKED! Indy show and Melissa did not show up, big mistake!
>
> The second set opened with the Truckers helping with a killer Let it Bleed, my call for last night. Patterson handled the vocals as he was up there without his guitar. After Dave gave them credit, JB said, "The Drive by Truckers, from Athens "Mother Fuckin'" Georgia"! It was a moment to treasure!
> We already have listened to it over at Rannin's. Everything after this was gravy. The Wonderin' was a bit weird the way they went into it. Another smokin' Diner, my favorite. Jojo was playin' a Secret Agent Man tease during the rap part of Diner. A Surprise>North set ender always smokes! George nailed the intro. Some of the songs in the second set were on the short side, Rebirtha and Wonderin'.
>
> Drew was using a lighter to watch his gear. Next time I see him, either he operates a mini disc, or he purchases a flashlight! Jeff Frank mentioned that someone messed with his rig when he went to the bathroom. I think they were tryin' to do his a favor by cutting off the hpf2! Over to Rannan's with Ernie and Jerry for the after show. The bonus tonite, I didn't take Nate's housekeys with me! Here is how it went down:

Widespread Panic Cincinnati 7-26-2005

Widespread Panic Cincinnati 7-26-2005
>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> I spent the day in Dayton beginning the set up of the last Grand American Trapshoot at the old facility. Sad to see it leave after about 100 years. After work, it was time to head south about 1 hour and 15 minutes to meet Ernie, Rannin, Nate, and Dr. Will at Riverbend for the Drive By Truckers/Widespread Panic show. I was totally psyched to see these two bands together. When I hit I-275 to get to the hotel to meet Will and John, I decided it was time for a pit stop at the Argossy Boat in Lawrenceburg. My last trip hear in April on the way to Drew Emmitt, my caliper locked up and I smoked my brakes. My intention was to "earn" the money to pay for my tickets for the next 2 nights. I threw down a "c" note at the $10.00 table. I have never played for 45 minutes in any casino without getting 2 face cards or a Blackjack at least once, until now that is! I was down to my last $10.00 and I rallied a bit. I left that table and hit the $15.00 table. In 12 minutes I got my c note back plus $80.00, mission accomplished!
>
> I hung with Will and John and then John and I left for Riverbend. I met Ernie, Jerry, and Rannan in front. The employees at Riverbend are total jack-offs. They refused to let me leave Nate the pair of ducats I bought for him. I had to carry them in and wait for him to call when he arrived.
>
> The Truckers hit the stage 11 minutes early as we were all still setting up. We mised the first minute of Heathens on the tape. They threw down a nice 52 minute set. Always happy to see my favorite, Sink Hole! Uncle Frank>Devil were a nice pair. They closed with Lookout Mountain.
>
> Panic hit the stage just before 8:00. Always nice getting a Bowl Legged, our 2nd one this year in Cincy! Wrangler and Papa's also in Cincy twice this year. I wonder if they keep track when they do setlists? Hatfield and Wrangler in the first set was sweet. My first Solid Rock was enjoyable. It was more upbeat than I expected. The set clocked in at over 1:12, long by today's standards. The second set opened with a less than favorite for me, Dyin' Man. The highlight for me was the Drivin'>Papa's sandwich. The set was short due to the 11:00 curfew and the longer 1st set. Definately fits on only 2 discs. It was nice seeing some of the Truckers invited up to assist on the Talking Heads, Life During Wartime>Red Hot Mama! A fun evening followed by a stop at the hotel to party with the Normal/Bloomington crew before ernie and I drove back to Indy.
>
> Great seeing Prosser and Lara from back home, the biggest surprise of the night! Great hangin' with Ernest T., Jerry, Rannan, Gordon, Drew, Lance, Teresa, N8 and K8, Jon, Sam, Jim, Christie, Brock, Courtney, Christa, and everyone else! Here is how it went down:

Ekoostik Hookah Toledo 7-22-2005

>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> I spent the past few days working in Toledo. I saw that Hookah was playing at the quarry, so I decided to leave work around 6 and meander over there. Centennial Quarry is a very nice place to see a show in an affluent area in Toledo. The venue has a poured dance floor big enough for at least 1000 people. The area around this floor is grassy and has tables lining the whole area. I've seen these guys here 3 or 4 times. When I arrived at 7:20, there were maybe 20 people on the inside. Most of the fans were in the lot drinking beer. As soon as they hit the stage at about 8:00, everyone came in and the crowd of about 500-600 were dancing away.
>
> They opened with an Old Montana Red Dog>Silver Train. This got everyone in the party mood. People must be careful inside as there are several "brown shirts" walking around in the venue. The Sister Sugar set ender was very nice and led us with anticipation for a kick ass second set. The second set did not dissappoint. The opener Devil Went Down to Georgia is always fun to hear. I don't know how Sweney makes that guitar sound like a fiddle! The version of Music was great. The Ohio Grown>Grass selection, ended the set. My only complaint, start earlier due to the early curfew. I did have fun hangin' with Taper Tim, Alex, Tim, Brad, Jeff, Andrea, Tommy, Matt, Taper Andrew, Corinne, and the usual suspects. Here is how it went down:

Allman Brothers Band Cincinnati 7-20-2005

>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> After a short visit home to work with Chris on building a retaining wall at the house, it's back to work in Ohio. I landed in Dayton and headed south to meet Jeff T. for the show. The other special note for this date, is it is Mark Brut's Birthday!!! We set up in about the 12th row DFC. Our neighbors were very cool, and I was definately not the oldest one in the crowd tonight! Moe came on at about 6:30 and played a very tight 90 minute set. They kicked it off with a nice Mexico, always a crowd favorite. Other highlights were The Faker and Lost Along the Way. I was hoping Warren might come out for a song, but not tonight.
>
> The Bros kicked it off with Don't Want you No More> Ain't my Cross to Bear. I was surprised to see Midnight Rider next, very early in the set. Another smokin' Egypt, with twin lead guitar breaks. The Rockin' Horse was stellar! Revival in the middle of the set was very nice. The Statesboro was not as good as the Toledo show, but they went back into it for a reprise.I was very happy to see the Les Brers to end the set. It stretched out about 30 minutes with the drum solo in the middle. With moe. opening, we were relegated to 1 long set due to time restraints. It was exactly 2 weeks from the last time I saw the Bros. I was hoping for a Whippin' Post, Stormy Monday, or Dreams. The opener and the encore were exactly the same as 2 weeks ago, plus several other repeats. The dual slide leads on Southbound were excellant. The playing was better and the crowd was up for the most part all show, unlike Toledo where ushers were actually asking folks to sit down. Good seeing fellow tapers Doug, Lee, and Tom (where was Pete?). Good hangin' with Jeff, Christy, Dan and Michelle, Pete D., and Brownie!

> the Jewish community. If the Jews won, they could stay in Italy, if the Pope

>
> The Jewish people met and picked an aged but wise Rabbi Moishe to
> represent them in the debate. However, as Moishe spoke no Italian and the
> Pope spoke no Yiddish, they all agreed that it would be a "silent" debate.
> On the chosen day, the Pope and Rabbi Moishe sat opposite each

>
> Next, the Pope waved his finger around his head. Rabbi Moishe pointed to the

Widespread Panic Los Angeles 7-16-2005

>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> Again, sorry for the delay, but work comes first believe it or not. Night three at the Wiltern had us all anticipating a blow out show. The Bowl Legged> One x One had us going in the right direction. I got my first Vipor, very short. I have seen this song covered several times over the past 30 years by David Bromberg, Leftover Salmon, and Ekoostik Hookah. My favorite version is still Bromberg. The Stop/Go had Dave all over it! JB rapped out 3 Little Birds. The jam out of Nebulous was very strong, I heard TYS again, even though they just played it. George also threw in a Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution tease. Jack was sweet, and they ended with my "favorite", Give (it up).
>
> The second set was full of "A" list songs! The double opener rocked. Always a plus getting a Postcard, This town is nuts, I don't ever wanna leave....". My 1st unexpected moment arrived with the 20 minute Diner. I had no intention to hear my favorite Panic song as they played it at the Greek last weekend. Definate bonus! The Pilgrims>Ribs was sweet. Nice having Matt Abts and Wally Ingram to help out on percussion. Jojo gave us a BWM, but after a long pause, he skipped "Someone throw me a fire" to eliminate getting pelted by lighters. The crowd still tossed a few anyways. The Chilly sandwich a bit loose, was always a good way to end the set. I couldn't have asked for a better 3 song encore. My first Expiration Date since NYE a couple of years back. After hearing this Dylanesque version, I hope it hits the regular rotation. When Coconut led into the opening notes of LAST DANCE, I thought I might lose it. What a surprise!

Widespread Panic Los Angeles 7-15-2005

>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> Sorry for the delay. I was at home for a couple of days building a retaining wall with the landscape expert, Chris Campbell! Sixteen thousand pounds of block and what do you get, another year older and deeper in debt........ Anyway, another fun night with the Southern Cali crew at the Wiltern. Geoff, Larry, and Sam in town for the the last 2 shows here. After many pit stops in the hotel, we hit the Wiltern at 7:00 to secure our spot FOB. I actually brought the AC supply as a plug was right there on the wall! All the comforts of home, although my house never gets this crowded!
>
> This was probably the weakest of the 3 Wiltern shows IMO. The first set was the shortest as well. The Rock was somewhat abreviated and the setlist was not the strongest. I did enjoy the 2nd set better. Gradle is always welcomed in any set! The You Should be Glad was very long and jammed out. Papa's> Arlene, what can you say, hell yeah! My first None of Us are free. The double encore was great. Dino had the lights working very effectively and Chris had the room sounding oh so good. We tore it down quickly as it was on to Tea Leaf Green at Cafe Club Fais Do-Do, about 15 minutes away.
>
> We got over to TLG in about 20 minutes, where was the turn for LaBrea Di and Zee? Chocolate strikes again! We meandered into the dark room and I planted in the middle of the dense crowd 25 feet from stage. Zee was doing a chemistry experiment at the Wiltern and lost the clamp. What would we do without duck tape! Thanks to Stecve for letting me borrow the roll! We only had 3 minutes to set up as TLG was on stage warming up. Just made it. We were treated to a nice 2 hour set including encore. I got to hear my favorite, In The Garden Part III. Maybe Graham can supply us with a setlist in the near future as I was busy keeping all the Jabroni's from trashing our gear in the middle of the floor! Time for the 24 hour Pho Viet Namese joint. Back at the hotel to party with the Southern California crew until sunrise!

Widespread Panic Los Angeles 7/14/2005

Widespread Panic Los Angeles 7/14/2005
>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> Sorry for the delay, but it has been an adventure! After an off day at the San Digo Zoo, and a great Mexican dinner with part of the San Diego crew at Fidel's, we headed up to LA. We secured a room directly accross the street from the Wiltern at the Garden Suites, thanks to Tammy and Brad. Diana from Marin made trip down and hung with us during the afternoon. We met at the Farmer's Market by Faifax and 3rd. Wow, a virtual smorgasboard of eateries. As many of you know, some people eat to live, but I live to eat! After gorging, we hit the Whole Foods on 3rd and I grabbed a grapefruit sorbet for the road.
>
> We hit the theatre at about 7:10 and secured a good spot FOB on the 2nd level up from the stage. Dave, one of my old friends from back in the day, lives in town and went with me. It even had an outlet that I ended up using the next 2 nights for my deck! Talk about convenience! The floor got packed quickly and the boys hit the stage at about 8:15. They meant business as they opened with an All Time Low>First Snow>TYS>Makes Sense. The end of the first set was as nice a 4 song segue as you could ask for. I kept thinkin' is this the first or second set? Touble>Holden>Guilded>Goin' Out West! They hit all the transitions very smoothly!
>
> After a short break, they got Down to Business. The Slippin'>Parsons rocked! Parsons is always a great catalyst in any set. I thought about Jayne once again as they gave us 2 more Bloodkin covers. The C. Brown was comical. After he brushes his teeth and combs his head, JB forgot the words, classic moment frozen in time. After 45 seconds, in which he gave us a shit eatin' grin, he remembered where he was and picks back up! Second Skin was as eerie as ever. Yhe Ride Me High was huge! Dave and George were trading killer licks and having a good time. The Hatfield had many classic lines as JB rapped out! He spoke of old tv shows such as Combat and Twelve O'Clock High, us "older timers" can relate. He also talked about Hatfield playing with his Jr. G-man Science Set to conjur up rain. The biggest surprise of all was the Sedated being played after Big Bust for the encore. We got to see Dino work his new lights all night as we were inside tonight. There were times they looked like glowing embers. After the show, we hit the many party rooms at the hotel to hang with the southern Cal crew. Here is how it went down:

John Hiatt/North Mississippi All Stars Detroit 7/3/2005

John Hiatt/North Mississippi All Stars Detroit 7/3/2005
>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> On Sunday, after working all day in the hot sun setting up for the upcoming week at the golf tournament, I went to the office to get a couple of things done. I was whipped from the late show Saturday night and working all day. At 5:30, I said, what the heck and headed to Detroit as John Hiatt was coming on the main stage of the Taste of Detroit Festival at 8:00 p.m. I got to the "picturesque" neighborhood of the festival. Are there any nice areas in Detroit???? Sorry if I offended anyone! I found the main stage at about 7:50. I quickly wired myself and hunted for "the seat". It was GA and most folding chairs had owners by then. I spotted a single seat in the 12th row and it became mine!
>
> Hiatt came on with the NMAS just after 8:00. I was excited to be in such a great spot! The sound was very good, a bit of a breeze. The crowd was very receptive. It was a mixed crowd, lots of folks even older than me! They are about to release a new album, Master of Disaster, and covered quite a few songs from it during the set. I was equally impressed by the NMAS playing backup on some of Hiatt's older stuff. They sounded very solid together. Luther filled Sonny Landreth's spot nicely! He told some good stories in between a couple of songs. Of course we got Memphis in the Meantime, Cry Love, Paper Thin, Ridin' with the King among others. John played mostly acoustic guitar. He picked up the 12 string for You've Got A Real Fine Look. He played electric guitar on 2 songs, and keyboards also on 2. Chris handled the backup vocals on a couple of songs. After the set, they came out for a 2 song encore. I began to shut down and disconnect and I was surprised as they pumped out a second encore. It made it to the 2:01:03 mark on a 2 hour dat!. All for nothing as when I got to my vehicle to listen on my 1 hour and 15 minute ride, the tape was destroyed as my d8 got hungry. It was tangled up beyond repair. I was so pissed! Sorry I can't share the memory with ya! Here is how it went down:

Allman Brothers Band Toledo 7-6-2005

Allman Brothers Band Toledo 7-6-2005
>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> I knew I would be in Toledo working the Jamie Farr, so I bought my ABB tickets the hour they went on sale. I pulled a pair in the 13th row. My buddy Levi came in from Cleveland. The Stranahan only seats about 2500. The sound is very good. I taped the Larry the Cable Guy show there last year and most of you have enjoyed it. We got there at about 6:40 for a 7:30 show. They did not open doors til 7:05. We took our seats and set up. I was definately not the oldest in attendance BC, Nate, and Jeff! The ushers are mostly ancient and I think every one of them asked if we were allowed to have our equipment. The Bros took the stage at 7:42. It was the second show of the tour.
>
> The first set was pretty standard. Hardly anyone was standing! I truly enjoyed the Guilded. The Soulshine always gets the crowd going. The set ender was the newer instrumental Egypt. It was a nice roller coaster ride. After the set, I went down to the front row to chew the fat with Dan and Michelle. They showed me the set list and on it, they were supposed to play revival in the middle of the set. It clocked in at over an hour. It was a bit on the sluggish, bluesy side. The crowd needed to get up.
>
> The second set started kind of slow as well. And then, Warren grabbed a hold of us. A killer Woman Accross the River! Probably my favorite song of the night. The rest of the set was money. Always great to see a Mountain Jam. Statesboro in the middle of the second set was different. I had a very good time and started to feel the effects from going to work at 4:30 3 days in a row and working late. The tapes sound great, a tad bottom heavy. I chatted with Slim, their soundman on the way out. He enjoys working with Innis on Mule tour. Go Innis! Everyone at the Greek, have a blast! Here is how it went down:

Widespread Panic San Diego 7-12-2005

Widespread Panic San Diego 7-12-2005
>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> I finally get to a summer tour show! It wasn't easy as work has been a major load this summer. I flew out west to meet Zee and head to San Diego. My plane leaving Dayton was 1 1/2 hours late. So, if my plane to connect with in Atlanta is on time, I do not get out . It was late by about 40 minutes. As I deplaned at 9:34, I saw the Departure board stating my plane was to leave at 9:40, in 6 minutes. I had to change concourses so I ran like hell. I got to the gate and the plane was closed and 20 people were told that standby was filled. I told the gate agent I had an actual ticket and I expect to be on the plane. He said they gave my seat away. I was pretty hot and told him to find me a seat. He went down the jetway, came back 5 minutes later and told me there was 1 seat left in the back. I boarded and off we went. Of course, there was no way my bag would make it and I knew it. Zee landed about 25 minutes after I did. We hit the rental car and headed to San Diego. We stayed with Dano and Julie who relocated there this year.
>
> The setting for the show was unbelievably beautiful! Right by the water. The weather hear is perfect, comfortably warm and not hot. There were about 3,000 to 3,500 in attendance, but there was a lot of howling and rowdiness! The sound was exceptionally good. Zee was a bit gunshy about the FOB situation. I kept him up there and we set up. We were hoping more people would show to fill the voids. I saw only 3 rigs in the section. The first set started early due to a 10:30 curfew. It was played entirely in daylight. There were some bright spots, but a few songs I just did not want to hear. JB gave credit to Bloodkin for Can't Get High. Jayne would have been proud to hear 2 Bloodkin tunes! I began to drink whiskey after I heard the opening notes of Don't Wanna Lose You. It just doesn't do it for me.I am glad they did not end with Doreatha, but tacked on a Worry. I was surprised to see George get 2 songs the first set.
>
> The second set was a different story. They played a full 1 1/2 hours with only a mini drums. Take out the May Your Glass be Full (Old Joe on Prozac), and the rest was for keeps! We got to see Dino work the second set as it was now dark. The lights are different patterns than spring tour. There are now 9 sets of 7 strips and 1 set of 6. At times they looked like glowing embers. Legba out of the gate is always a promising sign! The Drivin'>I'm Not Alone>Drivin' sandwich was great! Me & The Devil was a nice treat as was Junco Partner. After Me and the Devil, they played a pronounced jam that sounded as it could be a new song. It all flowed nicely. The double encore was also right on the money! I saw very few folks that I knew at the show, quite different. It was great hangin' with Zee, Dano, Julie, Tammy and Brad, Dominic, and Mike. I did get a chance to say hey to Charlie, Steve Kimock's archivist. When did Jojo stop singing the first verse of Good People? Here is how it went down:

Simplicity Toledo 7-2-2005

Simplicity Toledo 7-2-2005
>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> I checked out the local entertainment in Toledo as I am working here for the upcoming Jamie Farr LPGA Golf Tournament. I saw Simplicity on the schedule at the Village Idiot Saturday night! Can't be at the Gorge so The Village Idiot, here I come. After a long day of work getting ready for the golf tournament, I clean up, change, and head over to the venue at 10:15. The guys were surprised as I haven't seen them since late last fall. B Moore was handling the board, so I quicly set up my DAP1 and laptop inabout 5 minutes as they took the stage. Good seeing our venue owner, Nikki! Boss Man was present as well. I hung with Matt, B Moore, and Chris all night by the board.
>
> The first set was a bit on the short side, but included some of my personal favorites, Drivin' to Absolution and Life After Life. A couple of nice covers of Wilco, Ween, and even Elvis! I saw my first Echo. The second set was full of surprises and rarely played nuggets. I actually requested the blues standard done by none other than "Old Slowhand", Someday After a While during set break. I told them that they can really play the Blues! I haven't heard Sure Fire Scheme in a long time. B Moore informed me it has been about a year in the waiting since the last one. The 2nd set stretched out over 1 1/2 hours. After the show, I thanked the boys and headed to my room for a 4 hour nap before I had to go to work. I wspoke to Zee and Jeff from the Gorge as they filled me in on the Panic show. I told Jeff Frank that the encore did not do much for me. The Come Together pulled out the first 2 songs. His remark was that Old Joe was a beautifal Ballad, similar to Jerry singing Stella Blue. Jeff, lay off the margaritas and crack! Here is how it went down:

Drew Emmitt Band Toledo, Ohio 6-30-2005

Drew Emmitt Band Toledo, Ohio 6-30-2005
>
> Hey Y'All,
>
> I decided to check the music scene yesterday since I am in Toledo working the Jamie Farr Kroger Classic LPGA event for the next 2 weeks. Lo and behold, I see Drew is right here in town! No 2 hour drive after a show. It was still a long day as I had to meet my Sysco truck full of groceries at 5:00 am the morning of the show, ouch! He played at a small bar called Mickey Finn's. Good draft beer selection. I got down there at about 8:30. I saw Matt from Kenosha, setting up by the soundboard. He is doing a matrix of mics/soundboard for a few of the shows on this tour and they are available for download. About time the boys began doing this. When Drew arrived with Steve, Chris, Greg, and Ross, I went over to say hey. Steve and Drew are never surprised to see me the past several years as I have shown up at shows all over the country.
>
> We chewed the fat a bit, Greg and I even shared a phone call with Sammy out in California just before they hit the stage. The sound was very good. There was a minor hum coming from the bass amp. There were some crackles in the middle of the first set. The house sound guy told us it was the lightning from the huge storm going on outside. After the show, Drew and I reminisced about the '96 Greenville, S.C. show where lightning actually arced inside the building during soundcheck! My buddy Rich and I were taping the soundcheck as it happened. That quickly ended the soundcheck that night!
>
> My only regret was the fact that there were probably only 25 people at the show including Matt and I taping. To be honest, after halfway through the show, almost everyone was dancing up front, lots of fun. I got to hang with Andrea and Nicki. This is my second time seeing Chris on banjo, and he seems quite comfortable up there. Ross took some wicked leads with some great finger pickin'. Greg handles the stand up bass like a pro. I almost wish he played it during the Salmon shows in the past few years. Great versions of 99 Years, One Step at a Time, and Country Blues stretching out almost 10 minutes, in the first set. The second set was highlighted with the closing four song run of Highway Song, Tangled Up>The Other Side, and WFB. After the show I hung out with Drew for a bit before heading off to bed. > San Francisco's Warfield Theatre, a Market Street venue for popular music, will be renamed the SF Weekly Warfield under a three-year promotional deal between concert promoter Bill Graham Presents and the SF Weekly newspaper.
>
> The new name will be inaugurated with a launch party this fall to coincide with the SF Weekly Music Awards. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
>
> The San Francisco Bay Guardian said it is being hurt by the deal.
>
> Tim Redmond, the Guardian's executive editor, said that Bill Graham Presents told the Guardian's advertising staff that the concert promoter will reduce or eliminate its ads in the Guardian because it has agreed to commit more advertising to SF Weekly. Redmond said Bill Graham Presents pulled ads in the Guardian for this week's issue, due out today.

> Redmond declined to say how much Bill Graham Presents spends on Guardian ads, but said the concert promoter is one of the weekly paper's 10 or 12 largest advertisers. "It's a big chunk of change," he said, but the loss "will not break our backs. We're not going to lay off staff or go into a tailspin over this."

The suit is still pending.

> John Mecklin, editor of the SF Weekly, said: "To my knowledge, it's just a plain old sponsorship deal, and the people at the Bay Guardian are conspiracy freaks who'd say bad things about us no matter what. If SF Weekly discovered the cure for cancer, the San Francisco Bay Guardian would bemoan our assault on the cherished liberal ideal of mortality."
